Читать полностью…Thanks for sharing. The Church has grown a lot in Britain recently. Obviously still tiny as a % of total population but the growth is very apparent when you visit parishes and meet people. So many of the people at my parish were brought in the last 3-5 years.
No worries about your initial interest in the aesthetics. We all get introduced to the Church in different ways. Important thing is keep going deeper and not get stuck in things like aesthetics.
Is there an Orthodox parish near you?
I like the traditions and ceremonies and the fact that it seems more conservative and rooted in early christianity but I fear that I'm only becoming interested in Orthodoxy for aesthetic reasons so I want to learn more about the doctrine and theology so I can decide whether it's right for me

Читать полностью…Never miss everyday prayer. There are no excuses for not paying some of your time and attention to God. For He is with you and for you always. Every missed day of prayer is step back and down.
“Prayer is food for the soul. Do not starve the soul, it is better to let the body go hungry. Do not judge anyone, forgive everyone. Consider yourself worse than everyone in the world and you will be saved. As much as possible, be more quiet.” St. Joseph of Optina
Even just reading the prayer book uplifts the soul and fills it with repentance, gratitude and feeling the presence of God.
“Prayer is food for the soul. Do not starve the soul, it is better to let the body go hungry.”

Читать полностью…Think of your initial motivation through the aesthetics of the Church to be akin to how God designed human courtship: first we are attracted based on the outward beauty, and are then drawn increasingly closer as we get to know the inner person we are attracted to outwardly. Something is wrong with our basis of interest and relationship only if it does not naturally deepen and remains shallow. On that score, have no fear, Orthodoxy is beautiful through and through. Your interest is bound to deepen greatly.
