Aping into costly hardware in these times, while we're getting close to waking every morning up to a "what the fuck just happened ?!" is very risky, we keep making the mistake of thinking we can predict the future working from the old framework.
I too was looking into what GPU or unified memory hardware to buy to run serious local models, but thank God Bitcoin made me fiat poor so I couldn't get anything before this thing below happened.
Microsoft open sourced an inference framework that runs a 100B parameter LLM on a single CPU.
It's called BitNet. And it does what was supposed to be impossible.
No GPU. No cloud. No $10K hardware setup. Just your laptop running a 100-billion parameter model at human reading speed.
Every other LLM stores weights in 32-bit or 16-bit floats. BitNet uses 1.58 bits. Weights are ternary just -1, 0, or +1. That's it. No floats. No expensive matrix math. Pure integer operations your CPU was already built for.
The result:
- 100B model runs on a single CPU at 5-7 tokens/second
- 2.37x to 6.17x faster than llama.cpp on x86
- 82% lower energy consumption on x86 CPUs
- Memory drops by 16-32x vs full-precision models
The wildest part: Accuracy barely moves.
100% Open Source. MIT License.
For now, it's only this model and a couple of others, but the framework is a llama.cpp fork so other models are bound to be converted to this soon.
Ternary ops is also a very interesing field, people have been talking about making ternary chips, which might converge with quantum computers because they both use three states, so instead of 10 tokens / second, think a billion tokens per second, instant inference for any LLM or generative model (in the future).
