Scandals of the Past: The Affair of the Diamond Necklace

📍 France, 1785

Queen Marie Antoinette found herself at the center of a grand fraud — in which she was completely uninvolved.

A lavish diamond necklace, originally made for the previous queen, remained unsold. A conwoman named Jeanne de La Motte convinced Cardinal Rohan that the queen wanted to secretly buy the necklace. He agreed — and was tricked.

When the fraud was revealed, the scandal spread across France. Although the queen had no part in it, the public blamed her for extravagance and deceit.

⚔️ This incident severely damaged the monarchy’s reputation and became one of the psychological triggers of the French Revolution.
