Foot binding was a custom practiced in China from the early 10th to the early 20th century.

Girls' foot bones were broken, and then all the toes except the big one were tied together with a strip of cloth, forcing them to walk in small-sized shoes.

The size of the feet determined the prestige of the bride. Healthy and undeformed feet were associated with peasant labor and "lowly origin."

A 16th-century doublet. This rare example, in excellent condition, dates back to 1580. The doublet was the first type of clothing that tightly fitted the body. This piece is lined with thick leather for protection during fencing. The exhibit is stored in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
