🤷♂️How should I manage my time in the reading test ?
⏰Why time is important
Time is a key part of the reading test. A Band 8 or 9 candidate can skim read or speed-read a passage a lot faster than a Band 4 or 5 candidate. Your ability to quickly read the passages and locate the relevant information to answer the questions is one of the reading skills being assessed. So it is important to have a strategy for the test and to practice the skills of skim reading and scanning a passage.
✍️Transferring answers
Remember also that you need to transfer all of your answers onto a separate answer sheet within the 60 minutes that you have. You are NOT given any extra time for this at the end. It is very important to make sure that you don’t make any mistakes when you are transferring your answers and that you don’t make any spelling mistakes.
⁉️Should I read the questions first?
One question I’m often asked is whether you should start by reading the questions first. My advice is to only very quickly look at the questions just to satisfy your curiosity and no more. You will absolutely NOT be able to ‘guess’ any answers or answer the questions without reading the passage. This is a common problem with practice tests that aren’t written by trained exam writers. In the IELTS test, you will have to read the passage to find out the information you need, so reading the questions in detail first will be confusing and may make you feel anxious about what you don’t know. It is also a waste of very valuable time.
🙅♂️Bad advice about IELTS reading
By far the most common problem with IELTS reading is following bad advice and using the wrong materials to practice. If you use the wrong materials, you will not develop the skills you need to build to manage your time in the test. People who tell you that you can answer quickly by just ‘matching words’, or that you can quickly eliminate the silly options, are not using IELTS materials for their practice.

Health is extremely important. Without it we are unable to work, unable to earn a living, unable to socialise and we become completely dependant on others. Health is one of the few things that we can't buy, but we can take steps to improve and protect our health. By protecting our health, we are protecting our future.
📌What types of activities do you think help people stay healthy?
There are many kinds of activities that can help us maintain good health. Cardiovascular exercise such as jogging, tennis and football are really beneficial. But many people prefer doing more gentle exercise like yoga or taichi that help us with our physical and mental health. Personally, I think a balanced approach of different types of exercises is best combined with a healthy life style and diet.
📌What is the difference between physical health and mental health?
Physical health is about our physical bodies: our muscles, our blood circulation, our internal organs and about keeping our immune systems and other bodily systems working well. Mental health, on the other hand, is concerned with how healthy our thoughts are and our perspectives. It affects our ability to cope with situations in life.

The bar chart 📊and table📝 give information about a country's export earnings from five groups of products in 2015 and 2016.
It is noticeable that export revenues in all but one of the five product categories increased over the period shown. While petroleum products were the highest earning exports in both years, the textile industry saw the most significant growth in earnings.
Export earnings from petroleum products rose from around $61 billion in 2015 to $63 billion in 2016, which was an increase of 3%. Income from engineered goods reached a similar level. The country’s export earnings from these goods went up by 8.5% to approximately $62 billion in 2016.
From 2015 to 2016, there was a 15.24% increase in export revenue from textiles, with earnings rising from roughly $25 billion to over $30 billion. By contrast, there was almost no change in the amount of money earned from agricultural products, which remained at just over $30 billion. Finally, the only decline in income occurred in the gems and jewellery product group, where export earnings fell by around 5% to approximately $40 billion in 2016.

The bar chart compares the amount of time spent by people in the UK on three different types of phone call between 1995 and 2002.
It is clear that calls made via local, fixed lines were the most popular type, in terms of overall usage, throughout the period shown. The lowest figures on the chart are for mobile calls, but this category also saw the most dramatic increase in user minutes.
In 1995, people in the UK used fixed lines for a total of just over 70 billion minutes for local calls, and about half of that amount of time for national or international calls. By contrast, mobile phones were only used for around 4 billion minutes. Over the following four years, the figures for all three types of phone call increased steadily.
By 1999, the amount of time spent on local calls using landlines had reached a peak at 90 billion minutes.
Subsequently, the figure for this category fell, but the rise in the other two types of phone call continued. In 2002, the number of minutes of national / international landline calls passed 60 billion, while the figure for mobiles rose to around 45 billion minutes.

📈 What These IELTS Statistics Say About You 📉📊
Today we’ll look at IELTS statistics and find out how they can help you prepare for higher scores.
IELTS gathers a lot of data about it’s candidates, and publishes them for the public to see.
So, let’s take a look at the salient points and find out if they can shed some light on who excels on the exam.
Reasons for Taking IELTS
Academic
For people taking the exam for employment purposes, 18% got 6, 21% got 7, and 4.5% got 8.
For candidates using the exam for university, 21.5% got 6, 9% got 7, and 3% got 8.
👩⚕️Nurses scored quite well. They need this exam to work as a nurse in other countries. 16% got 6, 26% got 7, and 5% got 8.
Look at the data for overall 7!
👨🏫For students entering university with these scores, only 9% reached a 7, while 26% of nurses and 21% of other employees hit that golden score.
What does this tell us?
🔹 It says that adults who are already professionals are performing better than students.
It might be the case that workers are using English at work, but that is not the case for many of the nursing students that I have.
My theory is that adults who have more responsibilities, with family and work, are better at managing their time. I know I get more done when I have a lot to do.
⚡️Busy people get more done.
The lesson for students, in this case, is to be a more disciplined English learner.

It is important for people to take risks, both in their professional lives and their personal lives.
Do you think the advantages of taking risks outweigh the disadvantages?
Risk-taking can be critical for people’s working and private lives. I believe the merits of taking chances outweigh the drawbacks.
The main benefit of throwing caution to the wind is that it leads to opportunities. For example, if people take the chance on a new romance they might meet their lifelong partner. However, without taking the plunge there will be no opportunity to move beyond single life. Similarly, accepting the risk of a new job offer may help a person move forward in their career. The new job may lead to the acquisition of new knowledge and skills, which could propel a person up the career ladder.
Furthermore, taking risks can also lead to greater resilience. This is because the change involved with risk-taking evokes emotional responses such as fear and doubt. By actively experiencing these emotions people can become more tolerant of them. This is a valuable attribute as change and a certain level of risk-taking is unavoidable in all careers and aspects of life.
However, risk-taking often involves a certain degree of danger. The unpredictable outcomes of risky decisions can lead to deleterious outcomes. For instance, my Nephew invested all his money in a new business venture. The business failed and he became both bankrupt and unemployed at the same time. This had disastrous effects on his career and marriage.
In conclusion, I believe that the benefits of risk-taking surpass the drawbacks. This is because the merits of creating new prospects and building resilience outweigh the potential hazards of negative outcomes. Furthermore, the dangers can be mitigated through contingency planning for negative outcomes.

Model Answer
It is often said that music has the power to unite and connect people, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or ages. I completely agree with this view, and will give my reasons below.
Music can certainly reach across cultural and national boundaries and bring people together. Perhaps the best example of this would be the Live Aid concerts that took place back in the 1980s, and which were broadcast to a global audience. Two live events were held simultaneously in the UK and the US, and the objective was to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The concerts were a huge success, both in terms of the number of people around the world who watched them and their impact on international public awareness of the famine. They demonstrated, I believe, that music truly is the planet’s global language.
Just as it transcends cultures, music also has the ability to connect people from different generations. Regardless of age, we can all enjoy a memorable melody, a strong rhythm or a beautiful singing voice, and the best songs seem to have the same magical effect on all of us. This would explain why televised music competitions, such as ‘The X Factor’ or ‘The Voice’, are such popular prime-time shows. These programmes attract incredibly broad audiences because singing and popular songs appeal to children, parents and grandparents alike. I would argue that no other form of entertainment can bring families together in this way.
In conclusion, I believe that music is unique in its capacity to create shared experiences between people, irrespective of culture and age.

As you can see, even ‘short’ words can have a high level, because it is your ability to use and combine words in a skillful way that creates levels C1 and C2, not how many letters the words contain. Thus, rather than knowing more ‘long’ words, candidates at the higher level have a deeper knowledge of all of the words they know, and are able to skillfully use them to help make their language clear and precise.

⁉️Short words are too basic
Another misconception about vocabulary is that you should use as many long words as possible. In fact, one site I have seen assesses their students’ writing based on how many letters there are in each word in an essay, and gives feedback such as ‘more syllables needed’.

📍What difficulties did some people face with social distancing and lockdown at the time of the Coronavirus outbreak?
I think some people had a lot to cope with during lockdown. Some people struggled with the isolation, some people worried about their income and others struggled with being trapped in a building unable to go out. Most of the problems were psychological, but some also had practical problems. Some people were unable to get to supermarkets due to vulnerability and struggled to get food. It was a really challenging time.
📍What did some people do to stay positive at that time?
People used different methods to keep their chins up when they were in lockdown. I think some of them went online to either work or socialise. Others turned to indoor exercise and art projects. Nature projects like planting indoor plants and watching live videos of wildlife were also really popular. It was surprising how enterprising and creative people were ideas.
📍What useful technology helped us combat the Coronavirus?
That's a really interesting question. Let me see... I guess some of the most important pieces of technology were things like ventilators which kept people breathing when they had severe Coronavirus and the technology behind the contact tracing and testing which was used quite effectively in many countries to suppress the spread of the virus. Looking ahead at new technology coming out, new apps are being designed to allow people to trace where they have been and if they have come into contact with the virus at any time. I think this will really help us control the virus better.
📍During the Coronavirus crisis, some people did courageous deeds. Can you give an example of one from your country?
There was more than one example of courage in the face of possible illness or death in my country during the Coronavirus pandemic. All doctors, nurses, hospital staff, care home workers, social workers and other frontline workers all selflessly went to work knowing the risks they were facing. Some of them lost their lives as a result. Each day, they showed courage and determination to save lives. They were indeed brave and without them many more people would have died.
📍What do you think could have been done better to deal with the Coronavirus outbreak?
It's hard to say. Each country had their own approach based on what was happening in their own country and decisions were led by the science. With hindsight some countries should have done more rigorous contact tracing and testing at the start of the pandemic to prevent the disease spreading so widely. Also some of them ought to have gone into lockdown sooner before the virus had spread so far. We will see how things progress from this point onward.
Note: It's hard to say is an expression which means This isn't a simple thing to discuss - - "it's complicated."

The diagrams illustrate the stages in the life of a silkworm and the process of producing silk cloth.
There are four main stages in the life cycle of the silkworm, from eggs to adult moth. The process of silk cloth production involves six steps, from silkworm cocoon to silk material.
At the first stage in the life cycle of a silkworm, the moth lays its eggs. Around ten days later, silkworm larvae hatch from the eggs; these larvae feed on mulberry leaves. Then, after four to six weeks, the larvae become covered in silk thread, and it takes between three and eight days for a full cocoon to be produced.
For silk cloth production, a cocoon is first selected and then boiled in water. After boiling, the silk thread that makes up the cocoon is unwound, and then several strands of thread are twisted together. At the fifth and sixth stages in the process, the thread can either be dyed and then woven into silk fabric, or it can be woven first and then dyed subsequently.
