The following excerpt comes from test 3 in Cambridge IELTS book 10.
The travel industry includes: hotels, motels and other types of accommodation; restaurants and other food services; transportation services and facilities; amusements, attractions and other leisure facilities; gift shops and a large number of other enterprises. Since many of these businesses also serve local residents, the impact of spending by visitors can easily be overlooked or underestimated. In addition, Meis (1992) points out that the tourism industry involves concepts that have remained amorphous to both analysts and decision makers. Moreover, in all nations this problem has made it difficult for the industry to develop any type of reliable or credible tourism information base in order to estimate the contribution it makes to regional, national and global economies.

It is often said that music has the power to unite and connect people, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or ages. I completely agree with this view, and will give my reasons below.
Music can certainly reach across cultural and national boundaries and bring people together. Perhaps the best example of this would be the Live Aid concerts that took place back in the 1980s, and which were broadcast to a global audience. Two live events were held simultaneously in the UK and the US, and the objective was to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The concerts were a huge success, both in terms of the number of people around the world who watched them and their impact on international public awareness of the famine. They demonstrated, I believe, that music truly is the planet’s global language.
Just as it transcends cultures, music also has the ability to connect people from different generations. Regardless of age, we can all enjoy a memorable melody, a strong rhythm or a beautiful singing voice, and the best songs seem to have the same magical effect on all of us. This would explain why televised music competitions, such as ‘The X Factor’ or ‘The Voice’, are such popular prime-time shows. These programs attract incredibly broad audiences because singing and popular songs appeal to children, parents and grandparents alike. I would argue that no other form of entertainment can bring families together in this way.
In conclusion, I believe that music is unique in its capacity to create shared experiences between people, irrespective of culture and age.

Test taker performance
🔸 In 2022, 80.31% of test-takers took the Academic version of the IELTS exam, while 19.69% took the General Training version.
🔸 Of all test-takers, 51.78% were 🤷♀️female and 48.22% were 🤷♂️male.
🔸 The mean overall band score for Academic test-takers was 6.25, while for General Training test-takers it was 6.32.
🔸 Across both the Academic and General Training tests, female test-takers had slightly higher mean scores than male test-takers, with the largest gender gap being in the Speaking section of the General Training test.

ln some parts of the world, native languages are being lost as the world develops and evolves. Some believe that this is unimportant and even see it as an advantage. This essay will discuss whether the loss of languages should be cause for concern.
Certain aspects of everyday life are made easier through sharing a common language. First and foremost, business transactions are much simpler when the two parties concerned can understand each other well. Travel problems can also be dealt with much faster when there is mutual understanding Thanks to globalization, these types of communication are increasing and could be seen as largely responsible for the disappearance of languages in more remote areas. If people in those areas want to do business with others, to avoid frustrations, they must adopt the more widely used languages of the world. Thus, with each new generation, their native tongue becomes both less useful and less used. Thus, sadly, the need to make life simpler makes the loss of some languages inevitable.
Nevertheless, language has a multitude of uses that go far beyond tourism and business communication. Firstly, our native tongue is used to express our deepest feelings and emotions. These are much more difficult to convey when using a second language. Language also plays an important part in our culture and identity, uniting us as a community, Thus, when a language is lost, part of the community and culture also disappears. This must be an enormous loss for
the people concerned. Clearly, some people are affected far more than others by the disappearance of a language.
ln conclusion, while it is true that having fewer languages benefits the world of business, and makes transactions easier, I completely disagree with the view that the continued loss of languages is unimportant. The variety of native languages is what makes the world a richer place, and any loss of this kind should not be dismissed lightly.

As you can see, even ‘short’ words can have a high level, because it is your ability to use and combine words in a skillful way that creates levels C1 and C2, not how many letters the words contain. Thus, rather than knowing more ‘long’ words, candidates at the higher level have a deeper knowledge of all of the words they know, and are able to skillfully use them to help make their language clear and precise.

⁉️Short words are too basic
Another misconception about vocabulary is that you should use as many long words as possible. In fact, one site I have seen assesses their students’ writing based on how many letters there are in each word in an essay, and gives feedback such as ‘more syllables needed’.

The table illustrates how a police force in a British region was financed between 2017 and 2018; while the pie charts depict the distribution of those funds during the same period.
Overall, the police received the most funding from the government in both years; meanwhile, police officer and staff wages, albeit the highest in both years, decreased.
Starting with funding, in 2017 the total funds received was £304.7 million. Over half of which was from the national government, at £175.5 million while the remaining came from local taxes and other sources, with £91.2 million and £38 million respectively. By 2018, the total budget had grown to £318.6 million. Specifically, the amount from the national government rose slightly to £177.8 million and local taxes contributed £102.3 million. The figure for other sources increased marginally to £38.5 million.
Turning to the expenditure, salaries for officers and staff were the highest in both years, with 75% in 2017 and it fell to 69% in 2018. Technology received 8% initially but the proportion almost doubled to 14% in 2018. Buildings and transport had the same proportion of 17% in each year.

Two illustrations are provided showing the manufacturing quarter of a town called Norbiton at present and the future layout.
Overall, this area will be completely transformed into a residential area.
At present, the area is located east of the town with a river running from the west to the east in the north, north of which is farmland. In the middle, there is a roundabout with two exits, one of which links to a main road in the south and the other is oriented towards the east, and some factories are scattered on both sides of it as well as around the roundabout.
In the future, two new exits will be added to the roundabout. One heading northwest and the other north, which will cross a newly added bridge allowing access to new housing, leaving only the countryside in the northeast. A small roundabout, will be constructed on the main road, linking to the large roundabout. The factories will be replaced with housing and facilities such as shops and a medical centre. A school will be built in the east with a new park located nearby.

What if the answer is ‘two and a half’ ?
🤷♂️ ‘What should I write if the question says ‘WRITE ONE WORD AND / OR A NUMBER,’ but the answer is ‘two and a half’?
✅In the IELTS test, ‘two and a half’ is seen as one number, even if you write it in words. So, you could write this answer in several ways, for example:
🔹2 1/2
🔹 2.5
🔹 two and a half
🔹 2 and a 1/2
🔹 two and a 1/2
Because they can be written as figures, or numerals, all of these are seen as ‘a number.’ Here are some more examples of ‘a number’
