Apparently it’s part of Play Protect which is billed as a security/anti-malware tool. May require passing Play Integrity to show as certified now.

Personally I think it’s also a way for Google to keep a tight watch on anything not being installed via Gplay because besides the publicly given rationale, they’d really really prefer that everything go through Gplay, so why not demonize the other stuff…

I could be wrong (I don’t use Gapps) but I didn’t think anything but a stock device (eg NOT a custom ROM) could get “certified” there.
