I tried to test a microG thing that interfaces with Gplay, didn’t want to test on my main Gplay account, bought a $10 or $20 gift card to add to my account and I stg they treated me like some kind of international terrorist or something just to add that balance to my damn account.

Required Gapps or you had to setup up 2FA (luckily could use TOTP) but then they demanded photos of the front and back of the card and a photo of the receipt and a phone number. FFS I gave up and said F it.

And they now use some proprietary method of authenticating users that relies on Gapps, they are going down the Apple path now.

Apple’s “2FA” needs a secondary Apple device to work.

Google has been diligently working to cripple AOSP for over 10 years now and force everyone to use their proprietary closed-source things.

So within that context it really does not surprise me. They really don’t want anyone to be able to daily drive anything remotely like AOSP.

I don’t have much of a problem with apps that insist on that, for example my banking apps don’t care.

And when I do have an app that doesn’t run for some reason, It’s rarely 100% clear what the catalyst is when you’re on a device without Gapps that doesn’t pass SN/PI, or only weakly. And I don’t generally have the time or motivation to spend gobs of time troubleshooting such things.

If I truly cannot live without such an app (eg some transit/vehicle service that relies on a lousy mobile app or you cannot use it at all), then that’s what the compartmentalized iPhone is for. 😏
