The early Turkish conquests in the 13th century displaced local chiefs, and to consolidate their rule, Turkish rulers implemented revenue assignments known as iqtas. These iqtas were granted to their nobles (umara) in place of cash payments. The assignees, referred to as muqti and wali, were responsible for collecting revenue from the assigned areas.
