The Third Battle of Winchester, took place on September 19, 1864, during the American Civil War. It was an engagement fought between the Confederate Army of the Valley, commanded by General Jubal A. Early, and the Union Army of the Shenandoah, led by General Philip Sheridan. The battle occurred near Winchester, Virginia, and was one of the bloodiest clashes in the Shenandoah.
General Early's Confederates held the Shenandoah Valley, an agriculturally rich region that was vital for the Confederacy. To counter this, General Sheridan was sent to the Shenandoah with orders to defeat Early's army.
September 19, Sheridan launched a surprise attack against Early's troops, initiating a chaotic battle. The Union initially made progress, driving back the Confederate lines. Early's troops managed to regroup and launch counterattacks.
The combined pressure of the Union assaults broke the Confederate lines, forcing Early to retreat.
