Members of the Belarusian opposition want to seize part of the country before establishing their own rule and calling in NATO forces to defend them, the country’s ruler Alexander Lukashenko claimed at a congress of Belarusian officials and industry leaders in Minsk on Thursday.
Speaking on the second day of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, Lukashenko alleged that opposition activists planned to capture the Kobryn district of Belarus’s southwestern Brest region, which straddles the country’s borders with Ukraine and Poland.
He did not offer any evidence to support his claims or details as to how the alleged plan to capture the district would work, saying only that members of the opposition planned to “seize it, declare their authority, appeal to NATO [and] bring in troops”.
Lukashenko further alleged that the United States was preparing an underground “Belarusian liberation army” to oust him, with the head of the country’s KGB Ivan Tertel claiming that 1,000 “militants” had undergone training in Ukraine and 300 in Poland as part of a plan to attack Belarus.
Tertel also alleged that the Belarusian security services had thwarted a drone attack on Minsk supposedly launched from Lithuania, where many exiled Belarusians are based, in claims Lithuanian officials quickly dismissed as “disinformation”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to visit China in May, he announced, revealing his decision as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visits Beijing this week.
“A visit in May is planned,” Putin stated at a Moscow business forum on Thursday without elaborating. The Russian leader visited China most recently in October last year.
Western leaders have viewed the China-Russia dynamic with mounting alarm as the two boost their military cooperation and exercises as well as expand their influence in the Global South.

North Korea accused the United States on Saturday of politicizing human rights in the East Asian country, denouncing what it called political provocation and conspiracy.
Pyongyang will make stern and decisive choices to protect its sovereignty and safety in response to Washington using human rights as a tool for invasion and hostile, anti-North Korea behavior.
An annual report this week by the State Department described "significant human rights issues" in North Korea.

France and Germany on Friday, April 26, firmed up plans to jointly develop a next-generation battle tank equipped with artificial intelligence and laser technology, billed as a game changer in modern warfare.
During a ceremony in Paris, the defence ministers of France and Germany, Sebastien Lecornu and Boris Pistorius, signed a memorandum of understanding that seals a 50-50 split in the industrial production of an advanced battle tank dubbed the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS).
"Today's signing is a real milestone," Pistorius told reporters. "This is not the tank of the future but the future of the tank," Lecornu added.

Russia attacked Ukrainian energy facilities in three regions on Saturday, damaging equipment and injuring at least one energy worker, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said.
Galushchenko said on the Telegram messaging app that the Russian strikes targeted the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine and the western regions of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.
DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, said its four thermal power stations were hit.
"The enemy again massively shelled the Ukrainian energy facilities," DTEK said in a statement. "The company's equipment was seriously damaged. At this very moment, energy workers are trying to eliminate the consequences of the attack."

North Korea will face the end of its regime if it attempts to use nuclear weapons, South Korean defense ministry warned, after the North said it conducted rocket drills simulating a nuclear counterattack.
"If North Korea attempts to use weapons, it will face an immediate, overwhelming and decisive response from the South Korea-US alliance, and the North Korean regime will face its end," ministry spokesperson Jeon Ha-kyu said in a regular press briefing.
Jeon said North Korea's continued provocations would only strengthen South Korea's military capabilities and US extended deterrence, and their trilateral security cooperation involving Japan.

Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun has pledged to deepen military cooperation with Kazakhstan – Beijing’s key Central Asian partner – while also highlighting regional extremist threats.
Speaking to Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana on Thursday, Dong said the region was facing a “complex” security situation as the “three forces” – Beijing’s term for terrorism, separatism and extremism – were “becoming more active”.
“The Chinese military is willing to continue to expand areas of cooperation with Kazakhstan and promote the in-depth development of relations between the two militaries,” Dong said.
The video allegedly shows the result of a kamikaze attack by Ukrainian drones last night on an airfield in Kushchevsk, Krasnodar Territory.
A warehouse with UMPC modules for guided aerial bombs was allegedly also hit.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to the seat of the European Union this month underscored the country’s delicate balancing act as it branches outside Russia’s sphere of influence.
Brussels and Washington promised to provide Armenia with 270 million euros and $65 million respectively.
"The U.S. and the EU are trying to drag the South Caucasus into geopolitical confrontation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement after Pashinyan’s meeting in Brussels.
Yerevan fundamentally disagrees with this view.
"We are grateful to our partners in Brussels and Washington for this unwavering support for Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and development. In building an Armenia that will be economically strong, that will be friends with all countries," Tigran Balayan, Armenia’s Ambassador to the EU, told The Moscow Times.
"Among these countries, of course, Russia is at the top of the list.”

The situation is desperate for the exhausted Ukrainian brigades in the Ocheretyne area. It’s a foregone conclusion that the Ukrainians will lose a few villages around this axis.
The real risk, however, is that the Ukrainian Tavriya Operational-Strategic Group—the command responsible for forces west of Adviivka—will have no choice but to cut its losses, retreat a few miles to the west and reconsolidate along a new defensive line threading north to south west of Ocheretyne.
How the Russians broke the Ukrainian line west of Avdiivka last weekend is the subject of heated debate in Kyiv and across the front line.
Some observers have blamed the Ukrainian army’s 115th Mechanized Brigade, which recently rotated into positions in Ocheretyne—and was immediately overwhelmed by the Russian army’s 30th Motor Rifle Brigade.
Others have pointed out that the 115th Mechanized Brigade is under-equipped and, like all Ukrainian units, starving for ammunition.
The firepower imbalance might prove decisive as the battle rages on. Sensing an opportunity and apparently feeling confident in their chances, Russian commanders have shoved the 15th and 74th Motor Rifle Brigades into the salient along with elements of the 90th Tank Division and some special forces.
At least seven Ukrainian brigades and a separate battalion are fighting back: the 23rd, 25th, 47th, 100th and 115th Mechanized Brigades, the 25th Air Assault Brigade, the 3rd Assault Brigade and the 425th Assault Battalion. The brigades typically deploy just one battalion at a time.
In all, it’s apparent the Russians have more than 10,000 troops in or near the salient. Just 3,000 or so Ukrainians oppose them.

Moldovan politician, Renato Ușatâi tells that ”If the Russians reach Nikolaev or Odessa, Moldova will reunite with Romania in under 24 hours” adding that ”this decision has been made long ago and all the necessary acts were taken”.
