On February 23, 1942, the United States experienced its first direct attack on the continental mainland during World War II when a Japanese submarine bombarded the Ellwood Oil Field near Santa Barbara, California. This event, known as the Bombardment of Ellwood, occurred just over two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, marking a significant moment as it brought the war to American soil in a way that heightened public fears. The attack was carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-17, commanded by Kozo Nishino, which surfaced around 7:00 PM off the Gaviota Coast, opposite the Ellwood field. Concerned about President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s scheduled radio address that evening, the Japanese government had ordered the shelling to sow panic along the U.S. West Coast, and Nishino chose the oil field as his target.
The I-17, a long-range Type B1 submarine equipped with a 5.5-inch deck gun, began firing shortly after sunset, with the first rounds landing near a Richfield aviation fuel tank just beyond the beach. Firing in the dark from a submarine rocked by waves, the gunners struggled with accuracy, unleashing an estimated 12 to 25 shells over approximately 20 minutes. The barrage caused relatively minor damage: a derrick and a pump house were destroyed, while the Ellwood Pier and a catwalk sustained slight harm. Most shells missed their intended targets, with some landing on nearby ranches or in the surrounding hills, and no casualties were reported among the few oil workers still on duty or the local residents.
The submarine involved, I-17, was one of seven Japanese submarines that had been patrolling the American West Coast following Pearl Harbor, having already sunk two merchant ships and damaged six others before returning to resupply in Japanese-controlled waters. On this mission, after completing the shelling, Nishino ordered the submarine to cease fire, and it sailed westward, safely returning to Japan despite pursuit by U.S. planes. Though the physical damage was minimal—estimated at around $500—the psychological impact was profound.
The aftermath of the attack amplified fears of a broader Japanese invasion, triggering widespread panic along the West Coast. Residents reported seeing signal lights, with some, like Reverend Arthur Basham of Montecito, claiming the submarine was communicating with onshore agents, though these reports were likely misinterpretations of unrelated lights, such as a car’s headlights. The next night, this paranoia fueled the so-called “Battle of Los Angeles,” where anti-aircraft batteries fired for hours at imagined enemy aircraft, later attributed to a weather balloon. The Ellwood attack also bolstered support for Executive Order 9066, signed just days earlier, leading to the internment of over 120,000 Japanese-Americans, as public hysteria linked the shelling to unfounded suspicions of espionage. Militarily, the U.S. strengthened coastal defenses, and while Japanese submarines continued occasional attacks—such as the later bombardment of Fort Stevens in Oregon—the mainland faced no further significant assaults from them during the war. The Bombardment of Ellwood thus stood as a pivotal, if small-scale, event that reshaped American perceptions and policy in the early days of the conflict.

The battle of Mollwitz was the first major engagement fought by Frederick the Great. Although the battle opened promisingly for the Prussians, an attack of the Austrian cavalry threatened to roll up their right flank. It looked like the young king's first battle would result in a disaster.

At this point, the 28-year-old Frederick wanted to organize a counter-attack, but the Count of Schwerin intervened and sent the king off the field. Too big was the threat of the king being wounded or killed. Now, he organized the infantry to resist the advancing cavalry. The Prussians managed to turn the tide of the battle back in their favor and ultimately won the battle.

The Bangka Island massacre occurred on February 16, 1942, when Japanese soldiers brutally killed survivors of the sunken SS Vyner Brooke on Radji Beach, Bangka Island. Around 100 survivors, including 22 Australian nurses, soldiers, and sailors, washed ashore after the ship was bombed. The Japanese separated the men, marched about 60 of them away, and bayoneted or shot them. The 22 nurses and one civilian woman were then raped by the soldiers, who afterward machine-gunned them in the surf and bayoneted any survivors, killing all but one. Wounded men left on the beach were also bayoneted, totaling at least 83 deaths. Three survived: Nurse Vivian Bullwinkel, shot but feigning death, hid in the jungle for 12 days before surrendering and enduring years as a POW; Private Patrick Kingsley, who survived the men’s massacre but died after surrendering with her; and Stoker Ernest Lloyd, who played dead and later survived as a POW. No Japanese soldiers were prosecuted; most died in later battles, and Japan has never acknowledged the crimes. Bullwinkel’s postwar testimony omitted the rapes under government pressure, leaving justice unserved.

The United States has officially designated eight Latin American criminal groups as "global terrorist organizations" following an executive order signed last month by President Trump.

Some shit you should know before you read: To some, being declared as a terrorist organization may seem like just a label, but it unlocks a wide range of tools at the US government's disposal. This can include more power related to financial sanctions, expanding legal grounds for prosecution, and immigration restrictions. Additionally, the designation enhances intelligence-gathering capabilities by prioritizing surveillance and information-sharing among international allies. It can also justify US military action, including drone strikes and on-the-ground special operations.

What's going on now: In an announcement, the State Department officially designated 8 Latin American criminal groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists. The groups now on the list are Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Cartel de Sinaloa, Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion, Carteles Unidos, Cartel de Noreste, Cartel del Golfo, & La Nueva Familia Michoacana.

In a statement, Secretary Marco Rubio said, "The intent of designating these cartels and transnational organizations as terrorists is to protect our nation, the American people, and our hemisphere. That means stopping the campaigns of violence and terror by these vicious groups both in the United States and internationally. These designations provide law enforcement additional tools to stop these groups."

Mexico responds: In response to the designation, Mexican President Sheinbaum said, "This designation should not be used by the United States as an opportunity to invade our sovereignty. With Mexico, it is collaboration and coordination, never subordination or interventionism, and even less invasion." She added, "The Mexican people will under no circumstances accept interventions, intrusions, or any other action from abroad that is detrimental to the integrity, independence or sovereignty of the nation including violations of Mexican territory, whether by land, sea or air."
