On March 4, 1941, the British navy raided a German position off the coast of Norway and inside the Arctic Circle-the Lofoten Islands. The raid, code-named Operation Claymore, destroyed its target, the Krebs, an armed German trawler. It failed, however, to achieve its objective: the capture of a German encoding device called an Enigma machine. The British navy severely damaged the trawler, killed fourteen German sailors, took another twenty-five prisoner, and destroyed the German forces' local stockpile of oil. The attack boosted British public morale temporarily, but the commander of the Krebs, who died in the raid, had thrown the Enigma machine overboard. The British forces were able to recover documents that gave clues to the Enigma's workings, however, and British intelligence was able to piece together enough of the German coding system to track German naval activity for about five weeks.

The Battle of Tsushima, fought on May 27–28, 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War, was a decisive naval engagement that showcased both the strategic brilliance of the Japanese fleet and the calamitous misadventures of the Russian Baltic Fleet. The Russian fleet, under Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky, embarked on an extraordinary journey of over 16,000 miles from the Baltic Sea to the Far East, aiming to relieve the besieged Russian forces at Port Arthur and challenge Japanese naval dominance. This months-long voyage began in October 1904, with the fleet navigating around the Cape of Good Hope—an arduous trek marked by logistical challenges, coal shortages, and growing exhaustion among the crews.

Early in their journey, on October 21–22, 1904, the Russian fleet stumbled into chaos in the North Sea during an incident known as the Dogger Bank affair. Paranoid about Japanese torpedo boats—a fear fueled by rumors and the tense wartime atmosphere—the Russians mistook a group of British fishing trawlers for enemy vessels. In a panic, they opened fire, sinking one trawler, damaging others, and killing two British fishermen. The blunder nearly sparked a war with Britain, forcing Russia to apologize and pay compensation, while further humiliating the fleet before it even reached the Pacific.

The Russians’ misfortunes continued as they conducted target practice during the voyage. Their gunnery skills proved so abysmal that they managed to sink some of their own ships—supply vessels or damaged hulls mistaken for targets—due to poor coordination and inaccurate fire. These self-inflicted losses compounded the fleet’s woes, reducing morale and matériel as they slogged toward their showdown with Japan.

When the Russian fleet finally reached the Tsushima Strait in May 1905, they faced Admiral Togo Heihachie’s disciplined and modernized Japanese navy. The Japanese, leveraging superior speed, firepower, and tactics, executed a devastating ambush. Togo famously "crossed the T" of the Russian line, allowing his ships to concentrate their broadsides on the enemy while minimizing return fire. The Russians, already ragged from their journey, were ill-prepared for the onslaught. In a bizarre twist, some Russian ships mistakenly identified Japanese vessels as friendly, signaling them with recognition codes instead of opening fire. This confusion delayed their response, giving the Japanese even more time to pummel the disorganized fleet.

The battle was a slaughter. Over two days, the Japanese sank or captured nearly the entire Russian fleet—eight battleships, numerous smaller ships, and over 4,000 sailors lost—while suffering minimal casualties themselves. Rozhestvensky was wounded and captured, and the remnants of his armada scattered or surrendered. The Battle of Tsushima not only ended Russia’s naval ambitions in the war but also marked Japan’s emergence as a global power, while the Russian fleet’s 16,000-mile odyssey became a saga of incompetence, misfortune, and ultimate destruction.

Conflicthistory and News

St. Anthony's Fire was a terrifying illness caused by ergotism, which happened when people ate grains like rye that were contaminated with a fungus called Claviceps purpurea. This fungus produced toxic alkaloids that wreaked havoc on the body, and since it thrived in damp conditions, it often spoiled grain during wet harvests in medieval Europe. Back then, no one knew what caused it—folks thought it was divine wrath or a curse since they didn’t understand fungi or microbiology. The disease hit hard in places where rye was a staple, like France, Germany, and Eastern Europe, especially from the 9th to 14th centuries. Depending on how the alkaloids affected you, it could take two forms: one made your nervous system go haywire, while the other choked off your blood flow.
When you got the convulsive kind, it started with a burning or tingling feeling in your arms and legs—like fire under your skin—before your muscles locked up in spasms or full-blown seizures. Hallucinations would kick in too, vivid and nightmarish, making you see demons or lose your mind entirely, and you might scream or thrash until you either recovered or died from exhaustion. The gangrenous version was even worse: your blood vessels would squeeze shut, cutting off circulation until your hands or feet went cold and numb, then burned with pain as the flesh turned black and died. Sometimes your fingers or toes would just drop off, shriveled and dry, and if infection set in, it could finish you off. On top of that, you’d feel sick to your stomach, vomit, or panic as your body betrayed you, and if you were pregnant, it might force a miscarriage because of the way it messed with your womb.
Whole towns could suffer during an outbreak—thousands died in France in 994 AD, and over 20,000 were hit in Russia in 1722, with some thinking it even played a role in the madness of the Salem witch trials. There was no real cure back then; the lucky ones got prayers or care from monks like those in the Order of St. Anthony, but mostly you just had to hope you didn’t eat the bad bread. Over time, it faded away as people figured out how to store grain better and eventually learned the fungus was to blame, with modern food safety wiping it out in most places. Weirdly, those same alkaloids that tortured people are now used in tiny doses for things like migraines or childbirth, turning a medieval nightmare into something useful. Still, imagine eating a slice of bread and ending up convulsing or watching your limbs rot off—life back then didn’t mess around.

Today in 1915, the first German Stormtrooper unit is authorized. With the First World War having began roughly seven months prior, the Western Front had become heavily fortified with trenches, with very little progress made on either side. Desiring to break the stalemate, the Imperial German Ministry of War ordered the creation of a new type of soldier. Known as "Stormtroopers," these soldiers were trained to strike fast, and clear the way for infantry assaults.

Usually consisting of young, unmarried men under the age of 25, the Stormtroopers were often armed with melee weapons and multiple grenades, as well as MP 18 submachine guns or P98 Luger sidearms with 32-round magazines. The sheer speed and success of the Stormtroopers gave them celebrity-esque status. In the words of one German medical officer:

"The men of the storm battalions were treated like football stars.

They lived in comfortable quarters, they travelled to the "playing ground" in busses, they did their jobs and disappeared again, and left the poor foot sloggers to dig in, to deal with the counterattacks and endure the avenging artillery fire of the enemy. They were so well trained and had developed such a high standard of teamwork. They moved like snakes over the ground, camouflaged and making use of every bit of cover, so that they did not offer any targets for artillery fire."

The Stormtroopers of World War I were a vision of what was to come. As the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, elite units who viewed themselves as the successors to their Great War counterparts assisted in the rise of Adolf H*tler. Known as Sturmabteilung (Storm Division), these troops - also known as Brownshirts - protected Nazi rallies and officials, and fought against Communist and Social Democratic paramilitaries.

Belarus is ready for mutual military inspections with Poland, covering areas up to 80 kilometers inside the territory, declared a representative of the Belarusian Defense Ministry, Valery Ravenko.

"We have informed our neighbors through the OSCE communications network that we are ready to carry out activities within the framework of regional confidence and security measures on the basis of the 2011 Vienna Document. This means that we are ready for talks, we are ready for the process of visiting military units - that is, exchanging information - and conducting mutual inspections.

Both on the territory of Belarus and on the territory of Poland, up to 80 km (from the border)," - Ravenko said, as quoted by the state-run BeITA. agency.

"Poland can convince itself that Belarus is not amassing forces and resources for aggressive actions, and that the Belarusian side is peaceful, ready for dialogue and cooperation," - it reads.

"We know about Operation Safe Podlasie. We know that three divisions are being formed, including on a specific section -80 kilometers from the Belarusian border. And our proposal is a kind of test (...) of Poland's policy." - The Belarusian ministry representative said.

The Polish defense minister rejected the proposal: "It is the Polish side that protects the border, and there are no grounds for trusting anyone other than the Polish services - the police, the army and the Border Guard." - stated the head of the Ministry of Defense.

Belarus continues to offer assistance to immigrants from the middle east to illegally cross the border into Poland and into Western Europe - these are the hybrid attacks. Belarus is supporting the invasion of Ukraine - it was from its territory that Russian troops launched their attack on Kyiv in 2022. Lukashenko's general refers to the principles of the OSCE, but the regime has nothing to do with the principles of that organization.
