In 1761, the Third Battle of Panipat occurred, marking one of the largest battles of the 18th century in Northern India. During this conflict, the mostly Muslim Afghani Durrani Empire, led by Ahmad Shah Durrani, decisively defeated the predominantly Hindu Maratha Empire. The battle resulted in an immense loss of life, with estimates suggesting that between 60,000 to 70,000 soldiers were killed in the fighting alone. Following the battle, the aftermath was grim as approximately 40,000 Maratha prisoners were massacred.

In 1129, the formal approval of the Order of the Templars took place at the Council of Troyes in France. The Council, convened by Pope Honorius II, gathered to address various ecclesiastical matters, including the formal recognition of this new military order. The knights, led by Hugues de Payens, had been operating for about a decade under informal papal support. During the Council, Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent Cistercian abbot, played a pivotal role in advocating for the Templars. He helped draft the Latin Rule, which structured the order's organization, discipline, and spiritual life. On January 13, 1129, the Council officially ratified this Rule, thereby granting the Order of the Templars its formal ecclesiastical sanction and setting its mission to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land during the Crusades.

In antiquity, women who had anxiety, mood swings and depression were sent by their husbands to the doctor, who diagnosed them with a disease called ′′ hysteria ". Their treatment was based on a ′′ pelvic massage ′′ with the purpose of achieving hysterical paroxysm, now known as orgasm.
There were so many women who began to attend consultations to have their ′′ treatment for hysteria ′′ that doctors at the end of the workday were exhausted and their hands were shaky; that's why they decided to invent a useful device that produced rhythmic vibrations and that hysterical paroxysm was achieved easier and faster in the patient without the need for the common manual massage: this is the origin of the vibrator. At that time it was seen as a healing artifact, even the wealthiest women had them in their homes for when they felt ′′ bouts of hysteria ".

On January 8, 2005, the USS San Francisco, a nuclear attack submarine, ran aground off the southeast coast of Guam when it collided with an undersea mountain protruding from the ocean floor. The ship's navigational technology failed to warn the crew of the mass ahead of them. Most of the crew sustained injuries, and one member subsequently died as a result of the collision. Despite the powerful collision, the vessel was still able to operate under its own power without malfunction and navigate back to Guam. Experts attribute the vessel's capability to continue operation after such a major collision to changes the U.S. Navy made to underwater vessels in the early 1960s after the USS Thresher sank unexpectedly. Navy officials created the SUBSAFE program in response, which ensured the hulls of underwater vessels could maintain their structural integrity under the pressure of such collisions. The U.S. Navy launched a formal investigation into the San Francisco incident, which was officially closed on May 9, 2005, citing a failure of the vessel's crew to review relevant charts indicating the underwater mass's presence.

French officer relaxing with his pet stork, Summer of 1918.

Although the summer of 1918 was relatively calm up to the beginning of the 100-day offensive, most people still did not believe that the war would be over soon. Most likely, they had learned not to underestimate the capabilities of their enemy again after the unexpected Kaiserschlacht had crushed two British armies in April of the same year. This time, however, it was time to relax. Germany had lost its offensive capabilities. All that was needed was one last push by the Entente. And to some part, the French had done their job. They, too, had lost their last offensive strength when they threw in reserves to save their British Allies. In August, it would be upon Britain to pay it back by breaking through the German lines.

In 1641, the Dutch East India Company, with the assistance of their local ally Johor, launched a significant military campaign against the Portuguese-held city of Malacca. The siege began on August 3, 1640, and lasted until January 14, 1641. During this period, the Dutch forces, numbering around 700 men, along with approximately 500-600 men from Johor, relentlessly attacked the heavily fortified Portuguese position. The Portuguese, led by Governor Manuel de Sousa Coutinho, had a garrison of about 260 men, but the total defensive force included around 2,000 to 3,000 native and mixed-race inhabitants. The siege took a heavy toll on both sides, with disease and starvation rampant. After months of blockade, when food supplies within Malacca became scarce, the Dutch successfully stormed the citadel. According to Portuguese accounts, this conflict resulted in the deaths of thousands, with the Dutch reporting losses of just under a thousand of their own troops. Ultimately, this conquest ended Portuguese control over the city, marking a significant shift in power in the region.

When archaeologists in Georgia conducted test excavations at a 3,000-year-old fortress, they worked in tall summer grass. When they returned in the fall, however, they discovered that the flora had previously concealed something shocking.

Using drone technology, researchers in the U.K., Georgia, and the U.S. mapped the sprawl of Dmanisis Gora, a Bronze Age “mega-fortress” in the Caucasus mountains, and discovered that the complex is 40 times larger than previously suggested. Their research, detailed in a January 8 study published in the journal Antiquity, could provide insight into the growth and urbanization patterns of ancient settlements worldwide.

“The use of drones has allowed us to understand the significance of the site and document it in a way that simply wouldn’t be possible on the ground,” said Nathaniel Erb-Satullo of the Cranfield Forensic Institute, who participated in the study, in a Cranfield University statement. “Dmanisis Gora isn’t just a significant find for the Southern Caucasus region, but has a broader significance for the diversity in the structure of large scale settlements and their formation processes.”

The Caucasus is a geographical region encompassing parts of Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and an ancient crossroads of many different cultures, including local populations. Large fortress settlements began to develop in the Southern Caucasus region between 1500 and 500 BCE, according to the study.

Though modern expansion threatens the site, the researchers hypothesize that thousands of years ago, Dmanisis Gora itself underwent impressive urban growth “because of its interactions with mobile pastoral groups,” Erb-Satullo explained. “Its large outer settlement may have expanded and contracted seasonally."

Ultimately, the drone mapping of Dmanisis Gora sheds light on the mega-fortress, as well as on broader patterns of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age societies as a whole. It’s also another example of declassified spy satellite imagery lending archaeologists a hand decades after the photographs were taken.

Conflicthistory and News

On January 2, 1791, Wyandotte and Lenape warriors attacked a settlement blockhouse that was built on the eastern bank of the Muskingum River, in a settlement dubbed Big Bottom, located in present-day Morgan County, Ohio. By the end of the massacre, the warriors had killed nine men, two women, and two children. After the American Revolutionary War concluded in 1783, relations between American settlers and Native people grew tense when settlers pushed their settlements farther into Native lands. In December 1790, a group of thirty-six settlers built a blockhouse and eventually added on two cabins at Big Bottom—which was land belonging to Native nations in the area. On January 2, when a group of Native warriors who were traveling along the Muskingum River observed the new settlement, they attacked in fury to protect their Native lands. After the Big Bottom massacre, violence between settlers and Native nations in the region increased drastically over the following three years. Eventually, the Native nations of Ohio Country were pushed out of the area by General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, which disbanded the Northwestern Confederacy, a cooperative confederacy of Native nations in the Great Lakes area of the United States, working together to protect their land.

In 1874, U.S. troops landed in Honolulu to protect King Kalākaua during a tumultuous period. The situation arose after a contentious election where Kalākaua was chosen as the new monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, succeeding Lunalilo who had passed away without an heir. His rival, Queen Emma, was not pleased with the outcome, leading to civil unrest among her supporters. On February 12, 1874, a riot broke out, known as the "Battle of the Barracks," where supporters of Queen Emma clashed with those backing Kalākaua. Fearing for the stability of the kingdom and the safety of the new king, the U.S. government, under President Ulysses S. Grant, decided to intervene. U.S. Marines and sailors from the USS Tuscarora and USS Portsmouth were dispatched to Honolulu to maintain order and protect King Kalākaua. Their presence helped quell the disturbances, ensuring Kalākaua could be safely installed as the new monarch. This intervention was part of a broader pattern of U.S. involvement in Hawaiian affairs, which would eventually lead to the annexation of Hawaii in 1898.
