🇧🇷 Uma imagem profunda e empoeirada das Plêiades

O bem conhecido aglomerado de estrelas das Plêiades está vagarosamente destruindo parte de uma nuvem de gás e poeira que está passando por ela. As Plêiades é o aglomerado aberto de estrelas mais brilhante do céu da Terra e pode ser visto por quase todas as pessoas a olho nu, e é até usada como um teste de oftalmologia cósmico. A jovem nuvem de poeira que está de passagem é parte do Cinturão de Gould, um anel incomum de formação de estrelas jovens ao redor do Sol na região local da Via Láctea. Nos últimos 100 mil anos, parte do Cinturão de Gould está se movendo através das Plêiades e está causando uma forte reação entre as estrelas e a poeira. A pressão da luz das estrelas repele de forma significante a poeira na nebulosa de reflexão azul ao redor, com partículas de poeira menores sendo repelidas de maneira mais intensa. O resultado de curto prazo é que partes da nuvem de poeira se tornam estratificadas e filamentadas.

🇬🇧 Closest Temperate World Orbiting Quiet Star Discovered

A temperate Earth-sized planet has been discovered only 11 light-years from the Solar System by a team using ESO’s unique planet-hunting HARPS instrument. The new world has the designation Ross 128 b and is now the second-closest temperate planet to be detected after Proxima b. It is also the closest planet to be discovered orbiting an inactive red dwarf star, which may increase the likelihood that this planet could potentially sustain life. Ross 128 b will be a prime target for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope, which will be able to search for biomarkers in the planet's atmosphere.

A team working with ESO’s High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile has found that the red dwarf star Ross 128 is orbited by a low-mass exoplanet every 9.9 days. This Earth-sized world is expected to be temperate, with a surface temperature that may also be close to that of the Earth. Ross 128 is the “quietest” nearby star to host such a temperate exoplanet.

🇧🇷 ROSS 128B – Um mundo temperado perto de nós

Com o auxílio do instrumento HARPS, o caçador de planetas único do ESO, foi descoberto um exoplaneta temperado do tamanho da Terra a apenas 11 anos-luz de distância do Sistema Solar. O novo mundo, designado por Ross 128 b, é o segundo planeta temperado mais próximo a ser detectado depois de Proxima b. Trata-se também do planeta mais próximo a ser descoberto em torno de uma estrela anã vermelha inativa, o que aumenta a probabilidade deste planeta poder potencialmente sustentar vida. Ross 128 b será o alvo principal do Extremely Large Telescope do ESO, o qual terá a capacidade de procurar marcadores biológicos na atmosfera do planeta.

Com o auxílio do instrumento HARPS (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) do ESO, instalado no Observatório de La Silla, no Chile, uma equipe de astrônomos descobriu um exoplaneta de pequena massa, que orbita a estrela anã vermelha Ross 128 a cada 9,9 dias. Acredita-se que este mundo do tamanho da Terra seja temperado, com uma temperatura superficial que poderá também ser parecida com a da Terra. A estrela Ross 128 é a estrela próxima “mais calma” que abriga um exoplaneta temperado.

🇧🇷 Telescópios registram a colisão de Aglomerados de Galáxias em Abel 2744

Uma gigantesca colisão de alguns aglomerados de galáxias, cada um contendo centenas de galáxias, produziu esse espetacular panorama de ondas de choque e de energia. As colisões geraram ondas de choque que produziram fogos de artifício celestes no comprimento de ondas de rádio, vistos na imagem abaixo, nas cores vermelho e laranja. No centro da imagem, a cor roxa indica os raios-X produzidos pelo extremo calor da região.

A região é conhecida de forma coletiva como Abell 2744, e está localizada a cerca de 4 bilhões de anos-luz de distância da Terra. Os dados de onda de rádio mostrados na imagem são provenientes do Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, ou VLA da National Science Foundation, e esses dados foram combinados com os dados obtidos anteriormente pelo Observatório de Raios-X Chandra da NASA

A imagem abaixo mostra toda a beleza e os detalhes do hemisfério sul de Júpiter, como ele foi visto pela sonda Juno da NASA. A imagem que teve suas cores realçadas registra uma das estruturas ovaladas que fazem parte do chamado Colar de Pérolas, esse colar é composto por oito massivas tempestades em rotação que ficam localizadas na latitude de 40 graus sul do planeta gigante gasoso.

🇬🇧 Shocking Results of Galaxy-Cluster Collisions

A giant collision of several galaxy clusters, each containing hundreds of galaxies, has produced this spectacular panorama of shocks and energy. The collisions generated shock waves that set off a celestial fireworks display of bright radio emission, seen as red and orange. In the center of the image, the purple indicates X-rays caused by extreme heating.

The region is collectively known as Abell 2744, some 4 billion light-years from Earth. The radio portion of the image comes from new observations made with the National Science Foundation’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and is combined with earlier data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray observatory.

🇬🇧 NGC 2261: Hubble's Variable Nebula

What causes Hubble's Variable Nebula to vary? The unusual nebula featured here changes its appearance noticeably in just a few weeks. Discovered over 200 years ago and subsequently cataloged as NGC 2661, the remarkable nebula is named for Edwin Hubble, who studied it early last century.

Fitting, perhaps, the featured image was taken by another namesake of Hubble: the Space Telescope. Hubble's Variable Nebula is a reflection nebula made of gas and fine dust fanning out from the star R Monocerotis. The faint nebula is about one light-year across and lies about 2500 light-years away towards the constellation of the Unicorn (Monocerotis).

The leading variability explanation for Hubble's Variable Nebula holds that dense knots of opaque dust pass close to R Mon and cast moving shadows onto the reflecting dust seen in the rest of the nebula.

O que faz a Nebulosa Variavel de Hubble variar? A incomum nebulosa mostrada aqui muda notavelmente sua aparencia em apenas algumas semanas. Descoberta há mais de 200 anos, e subsequentemente catalogada como NGC 2661, a notavel nebulosa recebeu o nome em homenagem a Edwin Hubble, que a estudou no começo do seculo passado.

Talvez combinando, esta imagem foi registrada por outro xará de Hubble: O Telescopio Espacial. A Nebulosa Variavel de Hubble é uma nebuosa de reflexão feita de gás e poeira fina saindo da estrela R Monocerotis. A esmaecida nebulosa tem cerca de um ano-luz de diametro e situa-se à distância de 2.500 anos-luz, na direção da constelação do Unicornio (Monocerotis).

A principal explicação para a variabilidade da Nebulosa Variavel de Hubble é a de que densos nós de poeira opaca passam perto de R Mon e projetam sombras em movimento na poeira reflexiva vista no restante da nebulosa.

🇬🇧 MAVEN mission finds Mars has a twisted tail

Mars has an invisible magnetic “tail” that is twisted by interaction with the solar wind, according to new research using data from NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft.

NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) spacecraft is in orbit around Mars gathering data on how the Red Planet lost much of its atmosphere and water, transforming from a world that could have supported life billions of years ago into a cold and inhospitable place today. The process that creates the twisted tail could also allow some of Mars’ already thin atmosphere to escape to space, according to the research team.

The team found that a process called “magnetic reconnection” must have a big role in creating the Martian magnetotail because, if reconnection were occurring, it would put the twist in the tail.

🇧🇷 Missão MAVEN descobre que Marte tem uma cauda magnética torcida

De acordo com uma nova investigação realizada com dados da sonda MAVEN, da NASA, Marte tem uma cauda magnética invisível que é torcida pela interação com o vento solar.

A sonda MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission) está a orbitar Marte para recolher dados sobre o modo como o Planeta Vermelho perdeu grande parte da sua atmosfera e água, deixando de ser um mundo que há milhares de milhões de anos poderia ter albergado vida para se transformar no lugar frio e inóspito que hoje conhecemos. Segundo a equipe, o processo que provoca a torção da cauda pode também permitir que parte da já fina atmosfera de Marte se escape para o espaço.

A equipe descobriu que o processo de “reconexão magnética” deve ter um papel muito importante na criação da cauda magnética marciana porque, a ocorrer reconexão, ela provocaria torção na cauda.
