🇧🇷 No Caso das Galáxias o Tamanho Pode Enganar

Quando falamos de galáxias, o tamanho pode nos levar a conclusões um pouco equivocadas. Algumas das maiores galáxias do universo, estão dormentes, enquanto que algumas galáxias anãs, como a ESO 553-46, mostrada abaixo numa bela imagem feita pelo Telescópio Espacial Hubble, podem produzir estrelas numa taxa muito elevada. De fato, a ESO 553-46 tem uma das maiores taxas de formação de estrelas das 1000 galáxias mais próximas da Via Láctea.

A galáxia apresenta aglomerados de estrelas quente e jovens que banham a galáxia, e estão queimando com forte brilho azulado. A intensa radiação que essas estrelas produzem podem fazer com que o gás ao redor literalmente acenda e é esse gás que aparece vermelho na imagem do Hubble. A pequena massa, e a coloração distinta das galáxias desse tipo, faz com que os astrônomos prontamente as classifiquem como Anãs Azuis Compactas, ou do inglês, BCD.

🇬🇧 Dark Molecular Cloud Barnard 68

Where did all the stars go? What used to be considered a hole in the sky is now known to astronomers as a dark molecular cloud. Here, a high concentration of dust and molecular gas absorb practically all the visible light emitted from background stars. The eerily dark surroundings help make the interiors of molecular clouds some of the coldest and most isolated places in the universe. One of the most notable of these dark absorption nebulae is a cloud toward the constellation Ophiuchus known as Barnard 68, pictured here. That no stars are visible in the center indicates that Barnard 68 is relatively nearby, with measurements placing it about 500 light-years away and half a light-year across. It is not known exactly how molecular clouds like Barnard 68 form, but it is known that these clouds are themselves likely places for new stars to form. In fact, Barnard 68 itself has been found likely to collapse and form a new star system. It is possible to look right through the cloud in infrared light.

🇧🇷 Uma Aurora Global Em Marte

Um forte evento solar no mês de Setembro de 2017 disparou uma aurora global intensa no planeta Marte. Antes da tempestade solar, imagem da esquerda, e depois da tempestade, imagem da direita, as projeções mostram o aumento repentino na emissão ultravioleta da aurora marciana, mais de 25 vezes mais brilhante do que a emissão de aurora registrada anteriormente pela sonda MAVEN da NASA. Com uma crescente iluminação do Sol em direção à direita, os dados do espectrógrafo ultravioleta da MAVEN são projetados em tonalidades roxas no lado noturno de Marte simulados para se ajustarem às datas e às horas das observações. Em Marte, as tempestades solares podem resultar em auroras que tomam conta do planeta todo, diferente da Terra, o Planeta Vermelho não é protegido por um campo magnético global, que afunila as partículas energéticas carregadas em direção aos polos. A radiação nesse caso banha o planeta como um todo, e para qualquer um que estiver no solo marciano no momento da tempestade solar, os níveis de radiação são no mínimo o dobro daqueles medidos num dia normal, medições essas feitas pelo rover Curiosity. A MAVEN está estudando se Marte perdeu sua atmosfera devido à falta de um campo magnético global.

🇧🇷 Dois cometas e um aglomerado estelar

Duas manchas incomuns estão em movimento perto do famoso aglomerado estelar das Peiades. Mudando apenas um pouco a cada noite, essas manchas são, na verdade, cometas em nosso sistema solar proximo que, por acaso, vagaram até o campo das estrelas distantes anos-luz.

À extrema esquerda está o cometa C/2017 O1 ASAS-SN, um bloco de gelo em evaporação de diversos quilômetros, exibindo uma brilhante cabeleira de gás circundantes onde predomina o carbono, de brilho esverdeado.

🇧🇷 Puppis A, os restos de uma Supernova

Alimentado pela explosão de uma grande estrela, o remanescente de supernova Puppis A está blasting o meio interestelar no seu entorno, a uns 7.000 anos-luz de distância. Àquela distância, este colorido campo estelar baseado em dados de imagem óptica de banda larga e estreita tem cerca de 60 anos-luz de diâmetro.

À medida que os restos da explosão de supernova (no alto, à direita) se expandem por seus arredores clumpy, não-uniformes, filamentos de atomos de oxigênio brilham em tons verde-azulados. E atomos de hidrogenio e nitrogenio aparecem em vermelho. A luz da propria supernova inicial, desencadeada pelo colapso do nucleo de uma estrela de grande massa, teria chegado à Terra cerca de 3.700 anos atrás.

Os restos de Puppis A são, na verdade, vistos através de emissões distantes dos restos da mais proxima porém mais antiga supernova de Vela, próximo ao populoso plano da Via Láctea. Ainda brilhando através do espectro electromagnetico, Puppis A continua sendo uma das mais intensas fontes de raios X no céu.

🇧🇷 NASA e Lockheed Martin Pretendem Construir Uma Estação Espacial na Órbita de Marte

Começou a corrida para Marte.
A empresa Lockheed Martin e a agência NASA estão trabalhando juntas. Elas querem, construir a chamada Mars Base Camp, a primeira estação espacial em Marte.

Os dois planejam enviar uma tripulação de 6 pessoas para a órbita de Marte em 2028 e de lá encontrar um local para pouso no Planeta Vermelho que deve acontecer por volta de 2030. Da órbita, será mais fácil controlar os rovers em Marte. Os astronautas poderão também ter uma base para explorar os satélites marcianos.

Eventualmente essa base poderia ser usada para futuras missões de pouso. Os astronautas podem descer até a superfície de Marte e voltar para a estação. As missões na superfície durariam 2 semanas e poderiam ser abortadas a qualquer momento.
A NASA e a Lockheed Martin planejam começar a construção da base em 2021. O foguete da NASA, o SLS seria usado para lançar os pedaços da estação na órbita da Terra, e quando ela estivesse pronta seria levada para Marte.

🇧🇷 A última imagem dos aneis de Saturno pela Cassini

Como deveria a Cassini dizer adeus a Saturno? Três dias antes de mergulhar no lado de Saturno iluminado pelo Sol, a espaçonave robotica Cassini passou longe por trás do lado noturno de Saturno, com as cameras disparando.

Trinta e seis dessas imagens foram fundidas numa só — por um cidadão cientista alerta adepto — um último retrato do completo com os aneis do planeta que hopedou a Cassini durante os últimos 13 anos. O Sol está logo acima do quadro, levando Saturno a projetar uma sombra escura sobre seus enormes aneis.

Esta posição nas sombas não poderia ser fotografada da Terra, e não será visível novamente até que outra espaçonave lançada da Terra visite novamente o gigante anelado. Dados e imagens do mergulho na atmosfera de Saturno que encerrou a missão da Cassini, em 15 de setembro, continuam sendo analisados.

🇬🇧 Portrait of NGC 281

Look through the cosmic cloud cataloged as NGC 281 and you might miss the stars of open cluster IC 1590. Still, formed within the nebula that cluster's young, massive stars ultimately power the pervasive nebular glow. The eye-catching shapes looming in this portrait of NGC 281 are sculpted columns and dense dust globules seen in silhouette, eroded by intense, energetic winds and radiation from the hot cluster stars. If they survive long enough, the dusty structures could also be sites of future star formation. Playfully called the Pacman Nebula because of its overall shape, NGC 281 is about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. This sharp composite image was made through narrow-band filters, combining emission from the nebula's hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms in green, red, and blue hues. It spans over 80 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 281.

🇬🇧 OSIRIS-REx Views the Earth During Flyby

A color composite image of Earth taken on Sept. 22 by the MapCam camera on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. This image was taken just hours after the spacecraft completed its Earth Gravity Assist at a range of approximately 106,000 miles (170,000 kilometers). MapCam is part of the OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) operated by the University of Arizona. Visible in this image are the Pacific Ocean and several familiar landmasses, including Australia in the lower left, and Baja California and the southwestern United States in the upper right. The dark vertical streaks at the top of the image are caused by short exposure times (less than three milliseconds). Short exposure times are required for imaging an object as bright as Earth, but are not anticipated for an object as dark as the asteroid Bennu, which the camera was designed to image.

Onde foram parar todas as estrelas? O que normalmente era considerado como sendo um buraco no céu, hoje é conhecido pelos astrônomos como uma nuvem molecular escura. Aqui, uma alta concentração de poeira e gás molecular absorve praticamente toda a luz visível emitida pelas estrelas de fundo. Isso faz com que o interior das nuvens moleculares sejam considerados um dos lugares mais frios e mais isolados do universo. Uma das nebulosas escuras de absorção mais notáveis, é a mostrada nessa imagem que fica na constelação de Ophiuchus, e é conhecida como Barnard 68. Nenhuma estrela é visível no centro da nebulosa escura indicando que a Barnard 68 é relativamente próxima, algumas medidas a colocam a cerca de 500 anos-luz de distância e com meio ano-luz de diâmetro. 🇬🇧 Global Aurora at Mars

A strong solar event last month triggered intense global aurora at Mars. Before (left) and during (right) the solar storm, these projections show the sudden increase in ultraviolet emission from martian aurora, more than 25 times brighter than auroral emission previously detected by the orbiting MAVEN spacecraft. With a sunlit crescent toward the right, data from MAVEN's ultraviolet imaging spectrograph is shown in purple hues on the night side of Mars globes simulated to match the observation dates and times. On Mars, solar storms can result in planet-wide aurora because, unlike Earth, the Red Planet isn't protected by a strong global magnetic field that can funnel energetic charged particles toward the poles. For all those on the planet's surface during the solar storm, dangerous radiation levels were double any previously measured by the Curiosity rover. MAVEN is studying whether Mars lost its atmosphere due to its lack of a global magnetic field.

🇬🇧 Two Comets and a Star Cluster

Two unusual spots are on the move near the famous Pleiades star cluster. Shifting only a small amount per night, these spots are actually comets in our nearby Solar System that by chance wandered into the field of the light-years distant stars.

On the far left is comet C/2017 O1 ASAS-SN, a multi-kilometer block of evaporating ice sporting a bright coma of surrounding gas dominated by green-glowing carbon.

🇬🇧 Puppis A Supernova Remnant

Driven by the explosion of a massive star, supernova remnant Puppis A is blasting into the surrounding interstellar medium about 7,000 light-years away. At that distance, this colorful telescopic field based on broadband and narrowband optical image data is about 60 light-years across.

As the supernova remnant (upper right) expands into its clumpy, non-uniform surroundings, shocked filaments of oxygen atoms glow in green-blue hues. Hydrogen and nitrogen are in red. Light from the initial supernova itself, triggered by the collapse of the massive star's core, would have reached Earth about 3,700 years ago.

The Puppis A remnant is actually seen through outlying emission from the closer but more ancient Vela supernova remnant, near the crowded plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Still glowing across the electromagnetic spectrum Puppis A remains one of the brightest sources in the X-ray sky.

🇬🇧 NASA and Lockheed Martin reveal their plans to build the first-ever Mars space station

The race to Mars is on.
Lockheed Martin and NASA have teamed up. Together, the 2 companies aim to build Mars Base Camp, the first Mars space station.

It's scheduled to send a 6-person crew to orbit Mars by 2028 and scout a site for the first human landing by the early 2030s. From orbit, it'll be easier to control robots on Mars. Astronauts may also leave the base to explore Mars' two moons firsthand.

Eventually, the base could be a haven for future landing missions. Astronauts could take a lander from the base to the surface and back. Surface missions could last 2 weeks and safely abort at any time.
NASA and Lockheed plan to start building the base in 2021. The SLS rocket will launch pieces of the base into Earth's orbit, where it will be fully assembled before launching to Mars.

🇬🇧 Cassini's Last Ring Portrait at Saturn

How should Cassini say farewell to Saturn? Three days before plunging into Saturn's sunny side, the robotic Cassini spacecraft swooped far behind Saturn's night side with cameras blazing.

Thirty-six of these images have been merged -- by an alert and adept citizen scientist -- into a last full-ring portrait of Cassini's home planet for the past 13 years. The Sun is just above the frame, causing Saturn to cast a dark shadow onto its enormous rings.

This shadow position cannot be imaged from Earth and will not be visible again until another Earth-launched spaceship visits the ringed giant. Data and images from Cassini's mission-ending dive into Saturn's atmosphere on September 15 continue to be analyzed.

🇧🇷 Um Belo Retrato da NGC 281

Olhe através da nuvem cósmica catalogada como NGC 281 e você pode perder as estrelas do aglomerado aberto de estrelas IC 1590. As estrelas ainda em formação dentro do aglomerado é que fornecem para a nebulosa o seu brilho peculiar. As formas destacadas aparecem por todo lado nesse belo retrato da NGC 281 e são na verdade colunas esculpidas e densos glóbulos de poeira com a sua silhueta destacada que são erodidos pelos intensos e energéticos ventos e radiação das estrelas quentes do aglomerado. Se essas esculturas sobreviverem tempo suficiente, as estruturas empoeiradas poderiam também se tornar local para a formação de futuras estrelas. Chamada carinhosamente de Nebulosa do Pacaman, devido à sua forma geral, a NGC 281 está localizada a aproximadamente 10 000 anos-luz de distância da Terra na constelação de Cassiopeia. Essa bela imagem da NGC 281 foi feita através de filtros de banda estreita combinando a emissão dos átomos de hidrogênio, enxofre e oxigênio da nebulosa em tonalidade verde, vermelho e azul. Na distância estimada da nebulosa ela se espalha por cerca de 80 anos-luz.

🇧🇷 Sonda OSIRIS-REx Faz Imagem da Terra Durante a Assistência Gravitacional

A imagem abaixo é uma composição colorida do planeta Terra e foi feita no dia 22 de Setembro de 2017 pela câmera MapCam da sonda OSIRIS-REx da NASA. Essa imagem foi feita poucas horas depois da sonda ter completado sua assistência gravitacional da Terra a aproximadamente 170 mil quilômetros de distância. A MapCam é parte do conjunto de câmeras da OSIRIS-REx chamado de OCAMS operado pela Universidade de Arizona. Pode ser visto nessa imagem o Oceano Pacífico e algumas massas de terras familiares, como a Austrália no canto inferior esquerdo, e a região de Baja Califórnia na parte superior direita. As linhas escuras na vertical no topo da imagem são causadas pelos curtos tempo de exposição, menos de 3 milissegundos. Tempos de exposição assim curtos são necessários para se imagear um objeto brilhante como a Terra, mas não para um objeto escuro como o asteroide Bennu, para o qual as câmeras foram desenvolvidas.
