Elon Musk has a new nickname to go along with his new ownership of Twitter.

The billionaire is now being referred to as "Elmo" inside the company, according to two people familiar with the matter. It began as a joke, one of the people said, given the close spelling of the Muppet's name to Musk's own and the irony of Musk's temperamental personality in contrast to that of the kind and curious "Sesame Street" character.

However, use of Elmo to discuss Musk has become more commonplace in recent weeks, as Musk has turned Twitter into "a dictatorship," one former employee said. There are potentially fewer repercussions from criticizing your billionaire boss if you can argue you were discussing a puppet, not the CEO.

Elon Musk said Sunday that free staff lunches at Twitter's San Francisco headquarters were costing more than $400 per meal because 'almost no one' was in the office. 

He said that according to badge-in records, average occupancy in the office over the last 12 months was below 10%, peaking at 25%.

Musk was tweeting Sunday after The New York Times reported that Twitter employees would have to start paying for office lunches themselves.

Musk was challenged on his $400 meal cost estimate by Tracy Hawkins, a former Twitter employee.

"For breakfast & lunch we spent $20-$25 a day per person. This enabled employees to work thru lunchtime & mtgs. Attendance was anything from 20-50% in the offices,” Hawkins said.

Elon Musk on Wednesday announced the end of remote working at Twitter, Bloomberg reported.

Musk, who took over Twitter on October 27, sent an email to his employees for the first time on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg, which reviewed the email.

The billionaire wrote in the email that employees would no longer be permitted to work remotely. Twitter expected staff to be in the office for at least 40 hours a week, unless Musk gave approval for them to work elsewhere, according to the email.

Musk was preparing Twitter employees for “difficult times ahead,” per Bloomberg.

Twitter appears to already be rolling out Elon Musk's controversial Twitter blue check verification subscription for $7.99.

According to an updated description of the Twitter app that appeared on the Apple App store Saturday afternoon, the company is adding new features to Twitter Blue "starting today." The post, which was first spotted by CNBC producer Steve Kopack, states that Twitter Blue with verification is currently available in iOS in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Updated as of November 6, 2022: According to an internal post viewed by The New York Times, the subscription will now be delayed until after the midterm elections Tuesday.

Musk's divisive paid subscription model, which he proposed shortly after taking over Twitter earlier this week, has been the subject of criticism and concern for many, including celebrities like Lynda Carter and Josh Gad and major media organizations.

Meta said Wednesday it plans to lay off more than 11,000 employees, or 13% of its workforce.

Such a move has been expected by employees for months, as Insider previously reported. Some vice presidents and directors were told on Tuesday of specific plans for the layoffs, solidifying an internal expectation of a 10% company wide-cut amid a reorganization, Insider reported. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that layoffs would take place Wednesday.
