YouTube is lowering the requirements for creators to get access to monetization tools under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). The company is expanding its shopping affiliate program to U.S-based creators who are part of YPP and have more than 20,000 subscribers.

The Google-owned company said that the new conditions to be qualified for the partner program are:

- Having 500 subscribers;
- 3 public uploads in the last 90 days;
- and either 3,000 watch hours in the past year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Previously, the conditions included:

- Having at least 1,000 subscribers;
- and either 4,000 watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

The popular third-party Reddit app Apollo is shutting down on June 30, 2023, as a direct result of Reddit’s recently announced new API pricing plans which would end up costing Apollo $20 million per year to continue to operate its business — an unsustainable ask for an indie developer.

The app’s maker, Christian Selig, had been one of the first to call out the impact Reddit’s new API pricing would have on third-party Reddit apps, noting that even if Apollo switched to a subscription-only model, it would still be in the red under the new API guidelines.

Since then, other app makers have come forward to share their same concerns and community backlash has prompted a site-wide protest with several top communities planning to go dark to send a message to Reddit leadership.

Meta is rolling out a broadcast-based messaging feature, called Channels, on WhatsApp, similar to a recent update it sent out to Instagram.

On WhatsApp, Meta is focusing on facilitating channels for use by entities such as NGOs, medical research institutions, and fact-checking bodies, as opposed to individual creators.

Admins can send text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls on these channels, Meta said. Notably, these are one-way conversations, so users won’t be able to reply to those messages.

Salesforce and Google Cloud are teaming up to help businesses leverage data and AI via a new strategic partnership.

The partnership will allow companies to use their data along with custom machine learning models to anticipate their customer’s needs, execs from Google and Salesforce said. The tie-up spans products and services including Google’s BigQuery tooling, Salesforce’s Data Cloud and Vertex AI, Google’s fully managed AI platform.

It’s the second such major partnership between Google and Salesforce in recent years.

New usernames aren't the only change coming to Discord. The company is also testing a suite of parental controls that would allow for increased oversight of Discord's youngest users.

In a live test running in Discord's iOS app in the U.S., the company introduced a new "Family Center" feature, where parents will be able to configure tools that allow them to see the names and avatars of their teen's recently added friends, the servers the teen has joined or participated in and the names and avatars of users they've directly messaged or engaged within group chats.

This approach, which toes a fine line between the need for parental oversight and a minor's right to privacy, is similar to how Snapchat implemented parental controls in its app last year.
