Problem at LHR is that they are well known for losing bags in transit
Mine were missing for a week last month
My buddy went to the US and they lost it on the way out ( never found ) and on the way back ( got after a week )
Some airlines for example alow twilight check in ( check in luggage the night before) at some airports to some destinations
So that's one possibility
Otherwise you have be in transit which may not be possible with budget airlines like easyjet or Ryanair as they are point to point .
It's possible to do this via BA
For example MAN - LHR - XXX
Cannot check in a bag in the UK or anywhere else in the world afaik.unless you are also on the same itinerary
Need photo ID
For flights within the UK (I do a lot of them ) most airlines only ask for a photo ID if you have checked a bag in
Many airlines only allow luggage check in 2.5 hrs or so before..

Used it at LGW North ..
Gateway/ no:1 gatwick / plaza were the options
Gateway and plaza were full.. no:1 gatwick had a virtual queue and got in after nearly an hour
Food was not great ..
These days most UK/ Europe priority pass lounges are rubbish ( even if you manage to get in )
There are some at the smaller airports which are still okay
Asia / Middle East ones are much better
