Bhats and Charan :

✅ Modern Rajasthan and Gujarat have maintained a strong bardic identity, and hold two main classes of bards :- "Bhats" and "Charans"

Bhats in Rajasthan :-

They are semi-itinerant performers, typically living in tents pitched around bamboo poles. They are of low - caste.

Charans :-

They are an elite bard caste in Western India that identify with the Kshatriyas.

They fulfil the same roles as Bhats, while possessing a unique identity of their own as more courageous and fierce, because as royal bards they would ride into battle with their kings.

✅ Ancient bardic tradition and practices still thrive daily in Kutch , and a festival dedicated to Charan lineage takes place there every year.

🔴🔵UNESCO CREATIVE CITIES NETWORK(UCCN) designated 49 cities as part of the creative cities network..With this, the total number of creative cities in the world has reached 295 across 90 countries

👉The Srinagar city has been designated the creative city in the field of Crafts and Folk Arts — only second city in India in this category after Jaipur.

👉Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO (INCCU) had recommended Srinagar and Gwalior for inclusion in the coveted list, only Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital made it.

♦️Process of selection:

Every year, UNESCO seeks applications for various cities across the globe for putting them under its UCCN project. The applications in India are routed through the Ministry of Culture.

-- While the norm is to announce two cities from each country, only Srinagar city was designated as part of UCCN by UNESCO this year.

(The Srinagar city had applied in 2018 also but the application was rejected then.)

☑️Ministry of Culture is the nodal Ministry of Government of India for all matters in UNESCO relating to culture.

🔵What does it mean to join UNESCO' Creative Cities Network?

👉By joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), cities commit to sharing their best practices and developing partnerships involving the public and private sectors as well as civil society in order to strengthen the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services.

👉They also pledge to develop hubs of creativity and innovation and broaden opportunities for creators and professionals in the cultural sector
👉The UNESCO Creative Cities aims to achieve Sustainable Development Goals through innovative thinking and action.

(Sustainable Development Goal 11 aims for Sustainable Cities and Communities.)

🔴About UNSECO CCN:

👉The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a project launched by UNESCO in 2004 to “promote cooperation among cities which recognized creativity as a strategic factor in their urban development”.
👉According to UNESCO, the cities designated as creative cities work together towards a common objective of “placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level”.

###UCCN tag would not only give global recognition to the particular city but also help it in international funding, tie-ups with craft universities and pitching craft as a product

🔵SEVEN CRITERIA

👉UNESCO designates the creative cities in 7 fields — Craft, Folk Art, Media Arts, Film Design, Gastronomy, Literature and Music

👉As of November, 2019, there are five Indian cities in UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as follows:

👉Jaipur-Crafts and Folk Arts(2015).

👉Varanasi-Creative city of Music (2015).

👉Chennai-Creative city of Music(2017).

👉Mumbai – Film (2019)

👉Hyderabad – Gastronomy (2019).
