Hair Loss

Sometimes all the efforts we make into caring for our natural hair goes down a rabbit hole, and Hair loss can be one of those distressing experiences.

What causes hair loss?

Traction Alopecia:
Occurs when tight hairstyles such as braids, weaves, or ponytails exert excessive tension on the hair follicles, leading to hair breakage and eventual hair loss.

Chemical Damage: Chemical treatments, such as relaxers, dyes, and excessive heat styling, can cause damage to the hair shaft and weaken the follicles, resulting in hair loss

Scalp Conditions: Certain scalp conditions can cause inflammation and irritation, leading to hair loss

Nutritional Deficiencies: Diets low in iron, zinc, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids can adversely affect hair health and lead to thinning or shedding.

Dry Scalp

Dry Scalp is caused when the scalp does not have enough moisture, is irritated and visibly dry, and is characterised by flakes that are smaller in size.

If your scalp is dry, the skin on other parts of your body, like your arms and legs, could be dry, too.

Dry scalp can be caused by

🎈 Cold, dry air - Important to apply oils every other day on dry weather seasons

🎈You wash too much - Keep your routine simple and once a week with a moisturising shampoo

🎈Your products are not working for you - Make sure you are not having a bad reaction to the products you use for your hair and scalp

Dry scalp can easily be treated by properly moisturising your scalp, and using products that does not clog your pores and cause unnecessary buildup such as:

Jojoba oil - Is a great moisturiser because it closely resembles the natural oil (sebum) our scalp produces

Aloe vera - Soothes the irritated skin

Tea tree oil

Rosemary oil

Dandruff vs Dry Scalp

Dry scalp and Dandruff are the most commonly occurring scalp issues we face. Since they are very similar from the outside and share many symptoms, they are often misdiagnosed. But if you look closer, the differences are significant.

Option II — Rosemary oil

Now rosemary water is more forgiving to the skin than rosemary oil. After all, essential oils are concentrated and pungent, and must be used in drops, literally.

How it is used:

If you are using a rosemary essential oil, you must dilute 4 or 5 drops with a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut oil. Massage the mixture directly into your scalp. Do this 2 or 3 times a week.

Benefits of Rosemary for hair

✨Helps prevent hair loss. In fact, it has been proved to work just as well as Minoxidil,

✨Soothes scalp and due to its antibacterial magic, it manages the effects of a dry and itchy scalp,

✨Stimulates hair growth. This is mainly because it promotes blood flow to the follicles which in turn produce sebum which makes your hair grow.

P.S. these aren’t speculations or guesses, the benefits of rosemary has been proven numerous times by multiple researchers.

What are the remedies?

Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel has soothing and healing properties that can nourish the scalp, reduce inflammation, and promote hair growth. Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to the scalp, leave it on for 30 minutes, and rinse with lukewarm water. Repeat this process several times a week.

Essential Oils:
Certain essential oils, such as rosemary, lavender, and peppermint oil, have been known to stimulate hair growth and improve scalp health. Dilute a few drops of the chosen oil in a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil, massage it into the scalp, and leave it overnight. Rinse the next morning.

Scalp Massage:
Regular scalp massages increase blood circulation to the hair follicles, promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss. Use your fingertips to gently massage the scalp in circular motions for about 5-10 minutes daily or before washing your hair.

Balanced Diet:
Maintaining a balanced and nutrient-rich diet is vital for healthy hair growth. Incorporate foods rich in vitamins (A, C, E), minerals (iron, zinc), and proteins. Include leafy greens, fruits, lean meats, legumes, and nuts in your diet.

Protective Hairstyles:
Avoid tight hairstyles that place excessive tension on the hair follicles. Opt for loose braids, twists, or protective styles that minimize pulling and tugging. Use satin or silk hair accessories and pillowcases to reduce friction and breakage.

Moisture and Conditioning:
Regularly deep condition your hair using natural, moisturizing products. Consider using a leave-in conditioner to help retain moisture and protect the hair from environmental damage.

Dandruff

Dandruff is a medical condition (Seborrheic Dandruff) where the scalp sheds off dead skin cells faster than the normal rate, resulting in a skin that flakes off.

The scalp can also be visibly red and irritated.

Beware not to confuse dandruff with psoriasis, which presents as a form of thick patches of skin that forms on your scalp and other parts of your body like your elbows etc.

Dandruff is caused by one of these conditions:

🎈Oily skin condition characterised by greasy, scaly, flakey itchiness of the skin. This means that there is an over production of oil by your scalp.

🎈When naturally existing fungi (Malassezia) living on the scalp is over produced, they release an acid which in turn irritates the skin

It is important to keep in mind that there is no magic treatment for dandruff that makes it go away in one use. You need to be consistent with taking care of the scalp with products designed to target dandruff.

These can include:

Shampoo - Look for anti fungal shampoos which contain Salicylic Acid or Coal Tar.

Product Recommendation: Head and shoulders classic clean daily shampoo infused with almond oil.

It is important to wash your hair at least twice a week, and for best results massage shampoo into the hair and let it sit for 5 mins.

Scalp Soothing Products - This can range from using Aloe vera to oils like tea tree oil and rosemary oil.

The Verdict

Rosemary is a house hold staple and is not that hard to find. When you think of the proven benefits it has, this magical herb is a go to ingredient in our hair care routine. I can’t name a simpler solution to many hair problems we all face. So, what are you waiting for?

Option I — Rosemary Water

Making rosemary water is extremely simple and straight forward.

What you will need:

- Fresh or dried rosemary leaves,
- 2 cups of water,
- And, Ironically, a pot.

What you will do:

- Heat the water and let it come to a boil,
- Add the fresh rosemary leaves,
- Allow the mixture to simmer for about 20 minutes,
- Filter the leaves out and transfer the water to a spray bottle.

How it is used:

Just like the almighty fermented rice water, you can use it as a hair rinse. After you are done washing your hair apply a generous amount of rosemary water and wrap it with plastic cape. Let sit for 30 mins and rinse it out. You can alternatively let it live on your hair and not rinse it at all, a leave in conditioner, if you may.

We all love rosemary. It has this fresh herby aroma and flavour which almost always levels up our meals, and for some, fixes the mistakes made when attempting to cook.

Interestingly, this house hold staple is also used as a medicine for its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, and has been said to fight against cancer as it inhibits the activation of pro-carcinogens. It is also used in aroma therapy for treating chronic pain along with Eucalyptus, and is known to reverse headaches, reduce stress and aid in asthma treatments.

When it comes to hair, and especially curly hair, rosemary’s fame has been sky rocketing recently. Weather it is the essential oil or the water, rosemary has proven itself to be a prime remedy in curly hair care routines.

Grapeseed Oil for Hair

Hair that’s thin or fine can benefit greatly from grapeseed oil since it’s so lightweight.

It will sit on top of strands to keep moisture in without weighing them down.

The linoleic acid in grapeseed oil isn’t naturally produced by our bodies, so adding it topically can help control water loss in hair and ward off hair loss.

It also has a high resistance to heat, so you can try applying it to damp hair as a heat protectant if you diffuse or ever blow-out your curls.
