🔆ZOJI LA
✅ Why in News: Zoji la Pass has been opened for Civilian Traffic over Ladakh from Sonamarg.
✅ Zoji La is a high mountain pass located in the Kargil district of Ladakh.
✅The pass links Leh and Srinagar and provides an important link between the Union Territories of Ladakh and Kashmir.
✅Zoji la is known as the “Mountain Pass of Blizzards”.
✅ It remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, cutting off the Ladakh region from Kashmir.
✅The Zoji la tunnel project was launched in 2018.
✅The tunnel is Asia’s longest and most strategic bi-directional tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh.

KOSI RIVER:
✅ The Kosi River is a trans-boundary river, running across important cities in Bihar and Nepal.
✅Its origin is in Tibet.

✅These rivers include the Sun, Kosi, the Arun, and the Bhote Kosi.

✅ By Motilal Nehru in 1928.
✅ As a challenge to Indians to draft own constitution.
✅ It was a reaction to Simon commission.
✅Jinnah Voted against this report but INC supported it.
The main points of the Nehru report were as follows:
✅India would be given Dominion status. This means independence within the British Commonwealth.
✅India will be a federation which shall have a bicameral legislature at the centre and Ministry would be responsible to the legislature.
✅Governor General of India would be the constitutional head of India and will have the same powers as that of British Crown.
✅There will be no separate electorate.
✅The draft report also defined the citizenship and fundamental rights.
🔆CTBT:
✅The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is the treaty banning all nuclear explosions - everywhere, by everyone.
✅India is not signatory.
✅The United States and China are the only remaining NPT Nuclear Weapon States that have not ratified the CTBT.
✅ It is not necessary for a country to sign CTBT before signing NPT.

🧤A group of 16 countries, led by Vanuatu, is seeking an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on “What are the legal consequences for states that have caused significant harm to the climate system and vulnerable states”.
🧤Also, The Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law has also sought the advisory opinion of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the specific obligations of countries about preventing, controlling, and reducing pollution of the marine environment.
🧤Climate justice is a concept that addresses the just division, fair sharing, and equitable distribution of the burdens of climate change and its mitigation and responsibilities to deal with climate change
🧤Usage: These examples can be used as an effort for Climate Justice esp. for small Island states and vulnerable countries.

✅Recently, the Prime Minister of India congratulated Karakattam dancer and recent Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee V Durga Devi.
📍About Karakattam Dance:
✅Karakattam is a form of folk dance performed at festivals, conferences, road shows, and primarily at Mariamman festivals.
✅It is one of the many creative traditions that owe their existence to Mariamman, the rain goddess.
✅While the dance form is not dying, it has undergone radical change and adaptation in recent years.
✅Karakattam and agriculture have a link. It is because the Mariamman pooja is held in the month of Medam after Makarakkoythu (harvest season) in Kerala.
✅Karakattam is mostly famous in Tamil Nadu, it’s performed in different parts of Kerala as well.
📍What are the characteristics of Karakattam?
✅Karakattam performances are characterised by a lot of swaying movements and joyous banter.
✅It requires a lot of practice and dedication. Three tiers of flower arrangements of different colours sit on top of a container filled to the brim with either water, rice, or soil.
✅All of this is balanced on the head of a Karakattam dancer while he or she dances.”
✅Other highlights include blowing fire, inserting needles into eyes, and keeping balance while holding a bottle parallel to the ground on the performer’s back.

What is the Pink Bollworm ?
✅The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) recently approved confined field trials for Pink Bollworm-resistant GM cotton in Hisar, Haryana
📍About Pink Bollworm:
✅It is one of the most destructive pests of cotton.
✅Scientific name: Pectinophora gossypiella
📍Distribution:
✅Originally native to India, it is now recorded in nearly all the cotton-growing countries of the world.
📍Description:
✅The adults are small moths about 3/8 inch long and are dark brown with markings on the fore wing.
✅The larval stage is the destructive and identifiable stage.
✅The larvae have distinctive pink bands and can reach a length of ½ inches right before they pupate.
📍Ecological Threat:
✅Pink bollworms are major pests of cotton.
✅Adults only last for 2 weeks, but females will lay 200 or more eggs.
✅Adults lay eggs on cotton bolls; once hatched, the larvae eat the seeds and damage the fibers of the cotton, reducing the yield and quality
✅When the larvae mature, they cut out the boll and drop to the ground and cocoon near the soil surface.
✅It has also been observed to attack hibiscus, okra, and hollyhock plants.
