Since you were young, special events excited you enough that sheer anticipation would drive you all day and keep you up at night. Would you like that back in your life? 
The trick to harness the power of anticipation is to keep a steady stream of exciting moments in your future. I call this the Anticipation Engine. There are two things to keep in mind:

1) Your energy is dependent on getting excited about your future. Keep your list long.

2) Once an event passes, your excitement will disappear.
Enjoy the current moment. Don’t rush ahead, but always have something fun coming next.
Living a life of anticipation always gives a natural energy boost. If your life is bland - schedule something fun and get excited again.

With only so many hours in the day, let’s start the week with a few ideas for being more productive.

1) Avoid meetings if possible. If you must, keep them short and sweet.

2) Incoming communication is nothing more than somebody else’s to-do list. Do your stuff first.

3) Organize your daily interruptions. They will never go away. You might as reasonably expect them.

4) Never schedule more than 50% of your day. That way, you can finish what you started.

5) No more multi-tasking. Finish one task before the next.  
BAM! You just added 50% more productive time to your day.

Today, I predict that there is a question floating deep within your mind that’s going to pop up and demand your attention very soon.  
What’s the question?
Is this all there is?  
Isn’t my life supposed to be more?
Am I destined for something bigger than myself?
Okay. That’s three questions… and you may be hearing all of them.
Always remember -
Discovering YOU is not so much a search. It's more of an acceptance.
It's about accepting WHO you are by being honest about your past actions.
It's accepting WHAT you do when you're doing you. It's not a thing; it's a feeling.
It's accepting WHEN you want to be true to yourself.  
Discovering your true self doesn't require a life-long search. It's a matter of accepting your daily actions as your choice. If you don't like them - change them.

A long time ago, it occurred to me that life is nothing more than a giant scavenger hunt. Yes, life is full of questions, and it’s long enough for you to figure out all the essential answers. And the winners are the people who figure out the solution for what you are seeking.

Here are a few that I use on a regular basis to get me thinking:

1) What do you want to do?

2) What do you want to have?

3) Where do you want to go?

4) What contribution do you want to make?

5) What do you want to become?

6) What do you want to learn?

7) Who do you want to spend my time?

8) How much money do you want to earn, save, invest?

9) How much time do you want off?

10) What will you do to create optimum health?

I’ll repeat it. Life is full of questions, and it’s long enough for you to figure out all the essential answers. It’s time to get busy.

Setting Expectation And Getting What You Want

Imagine how your life would improve if everybody in your world understood what to expect.

Expectations are powerful. Pay attention to these three:

1) What do you expect of yourself? You get to decide how you approach the world.

2) What do you expect of others? Clearly, understand what you expect of others. That allows you to avoid surprises - and toxic relationships.

3) What do others expect of you? When you let others know what they can expect of you - and walk your talk - you are living in integrity.

Your life will always be more comfortable when you know what to expect of yourself and others.

Steven Covey called it sharpening the saw. If you take a break to sharpen the blade, you will always cut more wood. The same applies to life.

My formula is Ritual, Rest, Rejuvenate, Reactivate. Repeat

1) Success comes when you perform ritual actions every day. Figure out what works and do it.

2) Running full-out all the time is not sustainable. You must stop and rest.

3) Resting allows your body and mind to rejuvenate and become healthy again.

4) When you are ready, it’s time to reactivate into action mode.

5) Repeat until you get what you want.

It’s easier to cut more wood when you take a break to sharpen your saw. A walk in the park on a busy day counts too.

When life gets in the way, do you get frustrated about being blocked?

I learned a long time ago that getting blocked is an everyday occurrence. The bigger my goals, the more blocks would arrive. I could either live with endless frustrations or find a better way. It came down to understanding:

1) Blocks have nothing to do with who you are. Self-inflicted or caused by others, they still have nothing to do with you as a person.

2) If you want something, there is always a way to get it. Always. You may not like the path. Your ego may get in the way. It may scare you. There is still a way to get what you want.

3) Removing blocks from your life takes nothing more than commitment and action. That’s called passion. No block can stand up to passion.

The next time frustration gets in your way, blow it off and keep moving. There is always a way to get what you want.

The truth is the most motivating power you can access. If you dare to see and accept the truth in all areas of your life, you will then have the power to respond and act in ways that will change your life – instantly and for the long term.

There’s a saying among dog trainers that for a dog, one time is all the time. Whether it’s good behavior or bad, once a dog learns what it can get away with, it’ll do it forever.

A couple of weeks ago, I visited a friend who is also a big-time animal trainer for film and television. While I was at her home, she introduced me to her Golden Retriever. I recognized his expressive eyes. It was Duke from the Bush Beans commercials we’ve all seen so many times.

My friend is an upbeat and positive person. A trait that works well for training performance animals to shine on command while on the set. While we were chatting, Duke was interactive and well-behaved. I had to ask how she trains him to be such a great actor?

Her answer sounded a lot like a lesson in human potential training.

I got something so positive from your message today. You talked about getting out of your comfort zone. I thought that all I have ever wanted was to experience a little Comfort Zone!

I realized from today’s podcast, people who have enjoyed living in their Comfort Zone have their struggles. It is hard to do scary things when you don’t have to. So you stay where you are and feel frustrated.

I have had success these last few years, but it has been challenging. I have had to take actions I didn’t want to take. Dig deep when all I wanted to do was bury my head in the sand. I wanted a happy, stable life so bad, and it kept me going.

With my bad marriage out of my life, selling my big burdensome house, and the bonus of cash in the bank from the sale, I feel a little Comfort Zone on my horizon. And honestly, I am ready.

When I was a young man, I trained in journalism as part of my broadcast career. Radio stations would send me to the local town meetings and political events. Anything newsworthy. My job was to write a story and deliver it on the air, and I thought I was doing a great job – until my boss called me into his office. He wanted to know why I wasn’t getting to the critical part of the story faster. He said I was distracting from what is important.

In my mind, I was doing no such thing.

I told the story how it sounded best in my mind, but nobody was listening long enough to hear what I had to say. All these years later, I’ve learned the “I want to get more out of life” crowd does the same thing.

Since the beginning of time, successful people have given this sage advice; you must set goals.

In the human mind, setting goals are the heartbeat of your life. Setting a goal will harness your focus, give you meaning and purpose, and drive you forward. It gets even better if you place a deadline. If your goal is essential, timely, urgent, you will likely do anything possible to get it.

Yes, likely.

You may have also heard that understanding WHY you want to achieve your goal is critical to your success. “Knowing your WHY will allow you to deal with every challenge along the way,” is what they said. But sometimes, you fall short. Losing weight is a good example.

Every year, millions of people set the goal of losing a few pounds. Most end up failing. But if you think about it, that makes sense. Nobody ever wants to lose anything. That’s against every survival instinct you have in your body. When you set a goal that takes something away, your mind will fight you every step of the way.

You Should be Unapologetically Unreasonable

Are you a reasonable person? Maybe it is time for you to change.
A reasonable person settles for the mundane and says, "It IS what it IS!"  
An unreasonable person says, "That's fine, but I don't like it that way, and I don't accept it!" They change people's perception of what is. They create a different reality. They don't accept the norms. 
Someone once told an off-color joke at a dinner party being held by Maya Angelou.
She stopped the party and said, "I don't have that in my house. You will have to leave. Even after an apology, she stood her ground.
"That's fine, that's for another time, but for today, you have to leave." 
Some people are so afraid to offend that they are willing to be reasonable. 
Be UNREASONABLE about your beliefs. 
Take a stand and become known for it! 
The world wants you to be reasonable and fit in. Don't do it. Be unreasonable!

An Uncomplicated Life The Easy Way

These rules will help:

Rule #1: Practice the rule of "Good Enough." Perfectionism is overrated.

Rule #2: Say No. Repeat it. Say NO a lot! 

Rule #3 - When you find yourself so busy that you can't keep up, resolve to complete what you are doing, and NEVER do it again. Yes. It’s possible.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Call me crazy, but everything I've ever done had its roots in a 30-day sprint - and it's a long time.

A week is easy, crossing several weekends and life events will make it seem like forever.

Here’s how you do it:

1) Set what Napoleon Hill calls a Major Definite Purpose, otherwise known as a big ass goal.

2) Stop that silly negative self-talk. Others may throw sticks and stones; don't throw them at yourself.

3) Start thinking of all the reasons you CAN be successful. Make a list.

4) Decide that you will do whatever it takes to reach your goal for the next 30 days. Nothing will stop you.

As we get closer to the endemic phase of the pandemic we've been living in for the last couple of years, I've noticed that people are getting back to their old ways.

Now that we're not being forced to evaluate our daily lives, confused about what you want - and how to get there. That's okay. It's a journey.

But what is that journey?

Winston Churchill said, "To improve is to change, so to be perfect is to have changed often."

And it helps if you understand the stages of change:

1) Pre-Contemplation. You may intend to take action but are unaware that your behavior is the problem.

2) Contemplation. You recognize the problem and start to debate the pros and cons of your actions.

3) Preparation. You intend to take action soon. You may even begin small steps.

4) Action. The process of making the specific changes required to create your new life begins.

I have an admission to make.

I'm a bit lazy. Yes, I also like to work harder than most people. Still, I'm lazy when doing things I don't want to be doing.

It's been said that when you do what you love to do, you will never work another day in your life. Frankly, I've found it to be quite the opposite. What I do is difficult and takes a lot of time and effort.

But I enjoy it?

Still, I'm lazy. I want everything to be easy, and I want it now. I don't think I'm different than anybody else. I'm lazy. I'm driven. I'm lazy.

I think I made my point. And if you know me well, you may be thinking; he's not that lazy.

Oh yes, I am…

While it may take a long time to master the skill required to make things easy for myself, I'm only willing to go through the hard work if it allows me to be lazy - eventually.

If you know that information, you can tell a complete story.

Years later, I re-arranged the formula for my personal growth. Every time I set goals and consider a different direction I ask -

Why? What? When? Where? Who?

Occasionally I need to ask HOW I’m going to accomplish my goal - but that usually takes care of itself.

The Magic of Habits

Whatever you get in life is a result of your daily habits. What is a habit?

According to the dictionary, it is a settled or regular tendency or practice. It is also something that is especially one that is hard to give up.

Good habits or bad – habits are hard to give up. If that’s the case, you may as well choose good habits.

In a survey of 233 self-made millionaires, here’s what people who are successful at anything have in common:

They get up early, read, a lot, spend 15 – 30 minutes each day on focused thinking.

Good habits, done daily, create success.

They make exercise a priority, spend time with people who inspire them, pursue their own goals.

Settled habits maintain success.

They get enough sleep, have multiple income streams, avoid time-wasters.

If you want better results you want, it’s simple as having a solid list of good habits that you do every day.

“When a client hires me to train a dog for a movie, the first thing I want to know is what the dog supposed to do? Like anything else in life, if I don’t understand what’s required, there’s no way I can get a dog to understand it.

Next, I figure out all the actions, behaviors, and skills needed and break them into small chunks. Then we practice until the dog understands how to perform each small step.

Finally, I connect the steps into a chain of behaviors one by one until the dog completed the sequence. Once that happens, we reinforce the training so that we get the same performance every time we ask for it.”

I suppose it can be said that you can achieve any significant goal in the same way. Ask yourself, “What’s that dog supposed to do?” Then get busy practicing the pieces until you get what you want.

Isn’t the Comfort Zone a completely different place when you have had to fight so hard for it?

A new Comfort Zone is not a different place when you fight for it. It’s a state where Judith Bardwick said people operate in an anxiety-neutral condition. That’s where most people live until you feel the need to change.

When that happens, you will feel the need to transition from safe and in control and to something new. First, you enter the Fear Zone. If you keep fighting, you transition to the Learning Zone. Continue to drive yourself, and you will arrive at the Growth Zone. That’s where you are now.

I’ve always visualized a Comfort Zone as the bubble I live. As grow and expand, my bubble connects with the bubble next to it. When it does, I arrive in a new safe and in control Comfort Zone. From there, I explore the possibilities of life until I begin the process all over again.

Why?

Because according to Abraham Maslow’s Theory of Human Motivation in 1943, “What a man can be, he must be.”

I guess we can say you are “musting” right now.

I told the story how it sounded best in my mind, but nobody was listening long enough to hear what I had to say. All these years later, I’ve learned the “I want to get more out of life” crowd does the same thing.

Recently, I spoke with a client when I realized she was very good at shifting to the unimportant—finding more time, learning more, and getting more advice. Even cleaning the garage was more important. In the middle of her wandering story, I stopped her,

“Why are you avoiding what is most important to you? Cut to the chase, say what you want, and go do it.”

Her response came with a few tears.

“I thought I was talking about what is most important. Now I realize I’m telling myself a story that is comforting and sounds good to in my mind.”

She is burying the lead in journalistic terms, busying herself with secondary details, and growing frustrated.

How does this relate to improving your life?

Do you say, “I can’t focus?” Nope. You are focusing on the wrong things.

Do you say, “I can’t get myself moving?” Truth? You are moving – in the wrong direction.

Do you say, “I don’t have enough money?” Wrong again. What you need is more money!

If something is important to you, give it the honor, respect and focus it deserves. Lose the drama, get to the point, and start getting what you want right now.

It’s not losing weight. It’s feeling better inside and out.

It’s not losing weight. It’s building your self-confidence.

It’s not losing weight. It’s having unlimited energy and stamina.

Any goal that focuses on loss alone lacks the positive motivation you need to succeed. No matter how bad you want it.

When you think about your daily process as steps on a mission beyond your why, everything changes. More success and happiness are in your future, and your possibilities are endless.

“My intentions are simple. I’m going to do everything I can to get you to fall in love with me, marry me, and spend the rest of our lives together.”

Her jaw dropped. She smiled, took a sip of wine, and said –

“Well, I guess we’ll keep going and see what happens.”

What? We’ll see how things go? I already know where this is going. Why do we need to wait? I know my intention, and I’m to get it!

Of course, I didn’t say any of that to her.

Yes, getting what you want in life requires knowing your intentions. Transforming them into goals and action is next. But, you and your dreams are not living on an isolated island. If others are involved, you must let them know what you have on your mind.

But, because you said your intention, does that mean you will get what you want?

No. It means that you now have a partner in your quest. Your intentions are about to merge. If all goes well, your actions will create success for everybody.
