Doctor Who Christmas Special 2024 Plot Details Tease a New Take on Time Travel
Den of Geek (RSS)

Across six decades and several iterations, one thing has remained true about Doctor Who. The series portrays adventures across space and time. For this year’s Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” writer Steven Moffat plans to put a unique twist on the concept.

“Imagine that a hotel chain got hold of the idea of time travel,” Moffat revealed to BBC South East in a recent interview (via Total Film). “What’s the first thing a hotel would do if they had time travel? They’d realize they have an opportunity to sell all the unsold nights in their old hotels [throughout] history.”

Fans already saw a bit of that hotel’s function in a teaser released back in July. The short begins with Ncuti Gatwa‘s Fourteenth Doctor popping into various visitor spaces throughout space and time, offering a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin latte. Halfway through, we meet Joy, a kind but lonely young played by...

Star Trek Just Brought Back the Worst Part of Enterprise Canon
Den of Geek (RSS)

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.

Star Trek has always been horny. But it took Lower Decks to make that horniness work. Need proof? Contrast two depictions of Star Trek‘s most infamous attempts at sexiness, the decontamination chamber.

Introduced in “Broken Bow,” the premiere episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, the Decontamination Chamber (aka “decon”) existed because the nascent Starfleet didn’t have the knowledge or materials to protect crewmembers from any indigenous diseases at the planet. So before leaving or returning to the NX-01, the crew would have to strip down to their skivvies and smear gel over their bodies. Producer Rick Berman designed the scenes to add “sexiness” to Star Trek. And it utterly failed.

Instead of emphasizing the story reasons for the chamber, which falls under Trek‘s values of exploration and open-mindedness, and even if the crew members were...

Paul Bettany's White Vision Confirmed to Return In Marvel's Next Show
MCU | The Direct | Latest Articles (RSS)

The MCU's next show is confirmed to bring back White Vision behind one of the franchise's original stars, Paul Bettany.

While Bettany was a mainstay in the MCU throughout the Infinity Saga, his role as Vision in the Multiverse Saga has understandably been a little more limited. Outside of two episodes of work in What If...? Season 1 and his previously presumed send-off in WandaVision, he's been absent for the last three years.

That's not to say that this character is definitively done in the MCU, as Bettany has teased a Marvel Studios return as Vision for the better part of the last three years.

Shetland Series 9 Episode 2 Review: the Annie Bett Muhduh Mystery Thickens
Den of Geek (RSS)

Warning: this review contains spoilers for Shetland series nine, episode one.

Shetland isn’t all sheep farming, ceilidhs, and charming gift shops selling hand-poured scented candles. They also have spies. Well, they did, until Annie Bett was killed by a single shot the chest from an automatic pistol. Now they have a mystery solve – who shot Annie the spy and fellow victim Anton Bergen, and why?

DI Calder had put the spy anglegether by the end of episode two. Something about a maths genius so brainy that she’d gone Oxford aged 15 but now spent her time doing tax returns for the local Chinese takeaway just didn’t add up. Of course Annie had been recruited the British intelligence service. That’s what happens those beautiful mind kids. Aged nine, there’s a picture of them holding up their GCSE certificates in the local paper, and by the time they’re legally old enough drive a scooter, they’re View original post

New Rey Movie Rumors Are Very Worrying for the Future of Star Wars
Den of Geek (RSS)

It’s no secret that film side of Star Wars has really struggled to get off ground again following end of Sequel Trilogy. Countless Star Wars movie projects have been announced in last five years, but The Mandalorian & Grogu is only film that’s actually completed production since The Rise of Skywalker.

A trilogy of films said to be helmed by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was announced andn put on hold indefinitely; new movies to be developed by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were shelved; Patty Jenkins’s exciting Rogue Squadron movie was announced,n shelved,n put back in development; and no one knows what heck is going on with Taika Waititi’s movie. There’s apparently a Jedi origin movie coming from Indiana Jones director James Mangold at some point, but nobody seems to know when. In short, things are a mess for Star Wars on big screen.

There was at least a modicum of...

James Bond Franchise Teases “Brave Change” in Next Movie
Den of Geek (RSS)

The James Bond franchise is one of the oldest and most respected in movie history—and it currently sits at a crossroads. It’s been several years since Daniel Craig hung up his Walther PPK and stepped away from the role in No Time to Die, the end of an era on the road to a new one.

Since then, there’s been a lot discussion about who or what Bond will be next, even as producers Barbara Broccoli and her step-brother Michael G. Wilson keep things close to the chest. Speaking with The Independent at an event honoring the late Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, co-founder (with Harry Saltzman) of Eon Productions and the man who shepherded the franchise from its beginning, Broccoli and Wilson admitted the challenges of creating exciting Bond movies in the current blockbuster climate.

“People are playing it very safe,” Broccoli told The Independent. “I think in times of crisis like this, you’ve got to be brave. It’s...

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Best Blade Joke Already Aged Like Fine Red Wine
Den of Geek (RSS)

This article contains Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers.

As is typical of the one they call the Daywalker, Blade is unimpressed. In the front seats of an abused and debased Honda Odyssey, two of his superpowered colleagues are jabbering about variants, different versions of the same characters, and all those other multiversal nonsense things that’s made superhero movies a chore in the 2020s.

“That’s Punisher’s AT4,” Jennifer Garner’s Elektra says about the glorified rocket launcher resting snugly in Wesley Snipes’ arms. “Which Punisher?” quips Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, “there’s been like five of them?”

That is when Snipes gets the line of the movie, at least where vampire killers are concerned. “There’s only been one Blade,” grimaces the man in the sunglasses. “There’s only going to be one Blade.” In the same beat, Deadpool slowly turns to look dead into the camera lens. The Merc with the...

Cross Review: A Modern Take on James Patterson’s Troubled Detective
Den of Geek (RSS)

This Cross review contains no spoilers.

Cross, Prime Video’s new adaptation of the long-running James Patterson crime series, doesn’t follow the books directly ... and that’s a good thing. Aldis Hodge perfectly embodies the sharp but troubled DC detective, but brings a much more personal touch to the character in a modern, more relevant tale. Although it’s serial killer plot gets muddled at times, the character relationships and the progression of the ongoing investigation keep the viewers on the edge of their seats in this first season.

Cross introduces us to a man reeling from personal tragedy. Alex Cross’ wife, Maria, was murdered a year before, leaving him and his family in a fragile situation, often due to the trauma brought on by Cross’ self blame. This complex portrayal of Cross as a family man and a detective is immediately engaging, making the leader character relatable as he...

Did Bad Sisters Season 2 Just Betray its Happy Ending?
Den of Geek (RSS)

Warning: spoilers for the first two episodes of Bad Sisters season two.

The final image of Bad Sisters season one was unabashed joy. Anne-Marie Duff’s character Grace, a woman worn translucent by her abusive husband JP and the aftermath of his well-deserved murder, threw off her clothes and leapt into the sea with her. Swimming at Dublin’s Forty Foot was a Garvey family tradition that JP (rightly dubbed “The Prick”) had stopped Grace from joining. Now that she was free of him and his violent, coercive control, she could finally swim again. It was beautiful.

The final image of Bad Sisters season two, episode two feels like a baffling betrayal of that happy ending. Instead of a woman joyfully leaping back to life, we see her car flipped onto its roof, and the Gardaí wordlessly deliver her teenage daughter to her sister Eva (Sharon Horgan), who howls in pain. Eva has cared for her four younger since their parents...

Deadpool & Wolverine Caps the Best Year Gambit Ever Had
Den of Geek (RSS)

This post contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.

He might arrive spinning his cards, accompanied by triumphant music and a slow-mo stride, but make no mistake: Gambit is introduced as a joke in Deadpool & Wolverine. Gambit’s a joke on a plot level, as he alone represents-quarter of the resistance army that the titular heroes hoped would be much larger; he’s also a deep cut in-joke, even by Deadpool standards, because he’s played by Channing Tatum, who tried for years to get a Gambit solo film out of development hell; and he’s a comic book nerd joke, decked out with all the absurdities that made him seem cool in the ’90s and dated immediately afterward, with his duster and head sock, and his superfluous French catchphrases.

But by the end of the movie, Gambit is a full-on superhero in his own right. And Deadpool & Wolverine is just of the stories that reestablished the Ragin’ Cajun’s status as of Marvel’s...

Bad Sisters Recap: How JP Died, the Life Insurance, Roger, the Claffin Bros. & More
Den of Geek (RSS)

Warning: contains major Bad Sisters season one finale spoilers.

In the final episode of Bad Sisters season one, the recently widowed Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) says goodbye to her neighbour Roger (Michael Smiley). Grace has sold the house that she used to share with her now-dead, abusive husband Jean-Paul (Claes Bang),d is taking their teenage daughter to move in with her older sister Eva (Sharon Horgan). Grace thanks Roger for all his help,d when he asks her not to forget him, promises that she won’t. How could she? Roger is one of just two men who know Grace’s secret.

The other is Matt Claffin (Daryl McCormack), the brother of insurance man Thomas Claffin (Brian Gleeson). Thomas spent the first season of Irish comedy-drama Bad Sisters doing his damnedest to prove that Grace’s husband Jean-Paul (known to her four sisters as “The Prick”) had been killed instead of dying in accident. If...
