They brought Ruben into the care home after his last episode. No one really knew where he came from. He didn’t speak, didn’t sign, didn’t even hum. He just stared. Always watching something that wasn’t there.

He’d sit in the common room, motionless, until someone walked past him. Then, like a switch, his arm would swing. Smack. Everyone froze the first time they saw it. His face didn’t even flinch from the pain.
They moved Ruben to a private room after that. He never slept. The sound of skin hitting skin echoed through the walls all night. Smack. Pause. Smack.
