How to Track Your Mental Health With the Stoic App

Here’s an app that I discovered recently. It’s available for purchase or as a subscription. From what I understand though you’ll want to look into it for yourself, is that there’s a free version though it doesn’t have all the prompts, etc for use. The reason I’m not sure is because there’s also a trial version. I’m thinking the trial version is a full version that needs to be canceled before the trial period ends if you decide it’s not for you.

I’m loving this!

Today I Noticed...

I was in the garage this morning just as the door opener changed over from 5:00 to 5:01 and the door went up for me to begin my walk. I’ve only been walking in our subdivision lately and today I had planned to walk a bit more.

I heard two types of birds singing their happy morning tunes but as of yet had not seen any. Yellow lantana was in bloom. I then saw something rather small in flight and wondered whether bats fly at dawn.

I turned onto the short street leading out of our subdivision and then headed right. I saw a lone female walker across the street up ahead and then a bit further back on my side were 2 joggers. When we caught up, we exchanged greetings. I couldn’t help but think that it was only a bit over a year ago when people would cross the street or move off the sidewalk when still a ways off. No, ha ha. Not because of me but I’m so guessing that they were in panic over covid. I couldn’t help but cross the street as well. You know...to be on their side. 😂

I had a difficult time engaging my mind on this exercise and thought of something to be grateful for; That always helps when the mind wants to veer off toward unwanted areas.

I turned right into the neighborhood behind ours where a woman was walking a dog. As I was walking it came to mind how it was in that neighborhood a few years or so ago that a javelina had charged at me as it probably thought I was a threat to her young one that I had passed a minute earlier. I saw American flags on some people’s homes. One place had reflective paper (aluminum?) in the garage windows. I saw what appeared to be new plants at the edge of someone’s driveway. As I got closer I saw that it was 2 large trimmings perhaps from yucca plants that had been cut down and placed there possibly for pickup. I saw my first bird of the morning.

As I turned the corner I thought of an older gentleman that my husband and I used to talk with regularly as he was sitting at a wrought iron table in his front yard. I haven’t seen him in a few years or so and I always wonder whether he still lives there and if all is okay. I don’t want to ring the doorbell that early in the morning, of course but also because what if someone else is now living there.

As I was approaching the next corner, I saw a sign in someone’s yard and noticed it was a kindergarten graduation sign -- apparently someone graduated from kindergarten. We don’t have a lot of children in this area. Hey, a hill! I haven’t walked up any noticeable hill in a looooong time. Ah finally. I am grateful to have had that hill to walk up. Having no steps in the house and no hills to speak of in our sub, it didn’t take long to show on my legs. 😬

I was approaching the entrance to the subdivision and briefly contemplated going straight across to another sub or turning to go home. I chose to cross. This subdivision also has some hills though my walk didn’t take me on any that could be felt in the legs. I saw my first rabbit of the day and greeted him/her and began on the short trail that would lead me to the road.

I saw a family of quail as I was nearing home. This desert life makes me smile in delight. So much beauty here. Through the small palm tree a bit from where I’m now sitting I can see a very small part of a mountain. Ya, we have a lot of mountains in the desert; Who would have thunk it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Try this exercise of “Today I Noticed.” It really does help to mindfully pay attention to what’s around you. Stop and smell the roses, so to speak.

Gratitude

What were some moments of joy for you today, something you can be grateful for?

I’m grateful that I didn’t get a headache in the hot Arizona sun this morning while at a farmers market in Phoenix. And I’m grateful to have located the restrooms; Now I won’t have to look for them next time…And this location actually has doors on the stalls! 😊 Ya, there is a farmers market at another Phoenix location that hasn’t had a door to the restroom itself and no doors to the 2 stalls either. Crazy, huh?

Zingy Vegan Avocado Dressing (Or Dip) - Dairy Free, Low Carb and AIP

Dressings

Ingredients:
3 medium (approx. 5 ounces each) avocados (this recipe is quite flavorful. If you prefer a more mild dressing, then simply add in another avocado)
1/8 cup lemon juice (or juice of 1 lemon. Lime works great too.)
1/4 cup olive oil
3 cloves garlic
2 teaspoons salt
3/8 cup water (add more for a thinner dressing)
1/4 cup fresh parsley (or 1 tablespoon dried. Cilantro is a great alternative.)
1/32 teaspoon stevia (basically a dash. See Recipe Notes and post for more info and alternatives.)

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender or food processor.
Combine until smooth.
Pour dressing over salad and mix to combine, or serve as a dip.

• 1/2 cup lightly toasted almonds (also toasted, salted pecans go nicely)
• 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon (cinnamon stabilizes blood sugar)

STRAIGHT FACTS HERE...

How to check your supplements/vitamins to
make sure they are NOT synthetic or contain toxic ingredients. If they aren't 100% God made, they are doing your body more damage.

Step 1...
Search for words listed in the ingredients that begin with "dl." When a word contains "dl" in the prefix, it is an indication that the vitamin is synthetic. As an example, "dl-alpha tocopherol acetate" and "dl-alpha tocopherol" are synthetic forms of vitamin E.

Step 2...
Find words that end with "ate" or "ide" in the list of ingredients. These words indicate that the manufacturer used synthetic materials for increasing the vitamin's potency and stability. Some words to look for include nitrate, acetate, sodium ascorbate, sodium benzoate, chloride, hydrochloride, silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide.

Step 3...
Find the synthetic form of the vitamin listed under the ingredient list. Natural vitamins come from natural food sources. If you see the vitamin listed as the vitamin itself, such as "vitamin D," then it is SURE to be the SYNTHETIC version, according to Dr. Ben Kim, a Canadian chiropractor. Look for food sources such as "citrus" instead of "vitamin C" or "parsley" instead of "vitamin K."

Step 4...
Identify the words "natural" on the vitamin bottle. If the bottle says, "100 percent natural" the vitamin supplement does not contain synthetics. On the other hand, a label that says, "natural" has some synthetic components. According to Earl Mindell's "New Vitamin Bible" only 10 percent of the product must come from natural food sources in order for a company to claim "natural" on the product's label. If the product label does NOT say "100 percent animal-based" or "100 percent plant-based," the supplement is synthetic. They are tricking you which is WRONG.

Step 5...
Look for the vitamin potency listed on the product's label. According to the Organic Consumers Association, if the vitamin supplement has a high or otherwise unnatural potency, the product IS synthetic. For example, a product that provides 1,000 percent of vitamin C is unusually high. This is ten times the amount you need daily, and an amount that even a healthy diet, consisting of natural, whole-food sources, cannot provide.

“Cornbread” Recipe (Gluten-Free, Paleo)

Bread/Rolls
Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes | Servings: Servings 8

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups blanched almond flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon raw honey
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons melted butter (plus a little more for greasing the pan and lightly oiling your hands)

Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350F.
Place almond flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl and mix.
In a separate bowl, add eggs, honey, apple cider vinegar and butter and whisk until well combined.
Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
Spread batter evenly in a well-greased 8-9 inch pie plate or a 2 quart casserole dish. An 8×8 pan works well, and an 11×7 will, too. I lightly oil my hands and pat the batter into place because I like the way it looks when it's baked, but you can use a spatula or spoon to smooth it, too.
If you're using an 11×7 baking dish, start checking for doneness at the 20 minute mark. It's ready when a knife comes out clean. If you're using a pie plate or 8×8 casserole dish, start checking around 25 minutes.

How To Quickly Ripen Bananas In The Oven

1 Preheat your oven to 300° F.

2 Grab a bunch of bananas and separate out the amount you’ll need for your recipe. Leave the peels on.

3 Place the unpeeled bananas on a baking sheet with a little space between each one. If I’m going for “extra-extra ripeness,” I line the baking sheet with parchment paper just in case a peel splits and some of the banana leaks out.

4 Bake the bananas for 15-25 minutes. The time needed will depend on the size of the bananas and how ripe they were before baking.

5 When they’re ready, they’ll turn brown and be soft to the touch. Remove the brown bananas and allow them to cool before peeling.
