Again, #CCP's ambition extends far beyond #HongKong, #Taiwan, it aims at the dominating global politics. #HK is an example of how fast and ugly things will crumble under #Beijing's orders, the world should not take their freedom and rights for granted but keep their eyes open to threats.

BuzzFeed targets Telegram for censorship?
Lauren Chen @thelaurenchen special for @rtintl
As platforms like Twitter and Facebook have increased efforts to deplatform views that counter the accepted progressive narrative, Telegram has emerged as a safe haven for dissident voices. Naturally, this has angered activists who have made a career out of pressuring Big Tech platforms to censor their opposition.
BuzzFeed specifically has released a piece claiming that “neo-Nazis and white supremacists” are using Telegram as a recruiting tool. Apparently, in order to become more palatable and reach a wider audience, so-called experts believe that these crafty extremists are trying a shocking new tactic: “avoiding explicit imagery and terminology and encouraging followers to change their avatars.”
Whether these users are simply mainstream conservatives or in fact phantom Nazis remains to be seen. But what is clear is Buzzfeed’s transparent attempt to draw negative attention toward Telegram’s light moderation policies.
In addition to branding Telegram a breeding ground for extreme ideology, BuzzFeed has also attempted to tie the events of Jan. 6 to the platform. Though not explicitly calling for Telegram to impose more censorship, the underhanded tactic of simply accusing apps of platforming bigotry was enough to get both Parler and Gab booted from their web hosting services; it’s easy to imagine that progressives hope to see a similar result with Telegram.
Leftists often tease that if conservatives don’t like Twitter and Facebook’s terms of service, they should simply “build their own platform.” But the consistent targeting of any site that does allow rightwing voices to speak unfiltered is illustrative of how progressive efforts to silence opponents will follow conservative users wherever they go.
