📖 If a Student Falls into Mistakes, Should We Hate and Warn Against Him?

Question:

Question: If a student of knowledge falls into some mistakes, and his ʿaqīdah is generally sound, is it obligatory upon us to hate and warn against him?

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān

Advise him. It may be that he is ignorant or doesn’t know. Clarify and advise him. If he persists upon [his mistakes] then hate him in accordance to the level of his deviation.

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a Persian neighbour who could prepare a good soup. One day he cooked soup for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and came to him to invite him. The Messenger of Allah asked: 'And is ʿĀʾishah invited too?' He replied; 'No'. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'No, (in declining the invitation)'. The neighbour returned once more and invited him again, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked; 'Is ʿĀʾishah invited too?' He replied; 'No', and so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said; 'No (in declining the invitation)'.....

ash-Shawkānī:
If you have nominated yourself for giving legal rulings to questioners and judging between two disputants, know that you are being tested and afflicted and others are being tested and afflicted through you; because blood is being spilled by your verdicts, wealth and rights are being removed from their rightful owners, what is unlawful is legalised and what is unlawful is prohibited. You are saying things which Allah ﷻ never said, with no legal evidence from the book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger. Rather, you are saying things that, through your own admission, you do not know whether they are true or false....

After mentioning the drowning of Phirʿoan Ibn Kathīr (d. 774h) says; The king (Phirʿoan) along with his entourage, generals and soldiers were destroyed and none remained in Egypt except the general public. Ibn ʿAbd al-Hākm mentioned in the book, ‘History of Egypt’, “Ever since that time, the women of Egypt have had a dominant influence over its men because the womenfolk of the fallen generals and eminent ones married those who were lesser social status than them from the general folk. Thus, they had leverage over them and this continues to be the way of Egyptian women until this day”.

The text in ‘Futuḥ Maṣr wa Akhbāriha’ by Ibn ʿAbd al-Hākm (d. 257h) is as follows:-

When Phirʿoan and his men drowned the women were considered the nobles of society and no one other than slaves and workmen were left. Since the women couldn’t be patient without men, a woman would free her slave and marry him, or others would simple marry their own slaves. These women would impose the condition over their men that they do not do anything without their permission, and the men would listen to them in that regard. Due to this, the women were in command of men.

ʿUthmān informed me that Ibn Lahʿiyah said that Zayd ibn Abī Habīb mentioned that the coptic women do this until today in line with their history, none of them (the men) would buy or sell except that he says “let me seek the orders of my wife”.

Shaykh ʿAbdullah al-Ghudayān:

A man once came to see me in my office. He was in a state of anxiety. He said to me ‘I travelled to study and stayed in a building wherein one of the neighbouring flats that was occupied by a man and his wife. I ended up living in this building for four years. During the early stages of my stay I began analysing the activities of this man – paying attention to his visits and absences, until I had an illicit relationship with his wife‘.

The man continued; ‘Throughout the four years, this illicit relationship continued in the absence of her husband‘. He said; ‘Thereafter I graduated and began searching for a pious woman to take as a wife‘ – as the narration states; ‘Seek out the pious one [to be your wife] – he said; ‘I found one, married her, and we began to live together. My neighbours in the building [we lived in] were five men who were all bachelors. Here were five men who all lived in one flat besides mine who also happened to be bachelors, [and now] they are all having illicit relationships with my wife until this moment‘.

So this man asked for the solution? I responded to him, dear brother, the Prophet ﷺ said; “Uphold chastity, and your women will be chaste“. You are the reason for this, and this is a punishment from Allah ﷻ. Whatever you carry out with the women of other people shall be done to your women whether you like it or not.

Thus, it is incumbent that an individual is fearful of Allah and lowers their gaze. If you would like to get married to one, two, three or four, may Allah ﷻ grant you the strength to do so. However do not be infatuated by looking at women who are unlawful for you, and accumulating sin from one angle, whilst receiving a punishment that is established on your women. One should fear Allah ﷻ.

Shaykh Muḥammad Taqī al-Dīn al-Ḥilālī:
Me and a friend of mine were transferred to teach in the Great Mosque of Mecca; and indeed teaching in the Great Mosque of Mecca is a great trial for the teacher. Often you would find a teacher – well known for knowledge and virtue – sitting and teaching in the Great Mosque of Mecca, yet his gatherings would barely exceed ten people. Then you would find another teacher, someone less than the latter with regards to fame and knowledge, yet you would see hundreds in attendance of his lesson listening. These affairs run in accordance to that which Allah ﷻ has ordained for everyone. Just like you find with shopkeepers; you find one shop frequented with many customers who generate sales whilst the shop next door – even though it stocks the exact same or even better goods – remains inactive, no customers visit it.

I – and all praise is due to Allah ﷻ – was from the blessed ones. Hundreds would attend my lesson which took place in front of the Gate of Ibrāhīm. I do no know the cause for this except that I used to speak in a dialect that could be understood by all Arabs. As for the other teachers, their lack of attendees was due to them speaking in a local dialect [which could only be understood] by a specific people.

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Azīz Aal-Shaykh:

I once asked the famous literarian and editor of a great portion of tafsīr aṭ-Ṭabarī – professor Maḥmūd Shākir – to send me a book on the Arabic language so that I may read it. “Read Lisān al-ʿArab‘ he replied. So I said, ‘Lisān al-ʿArab is 20 volumes! How can I read that?‘ To which he replied, ‘Therefore, go and find another career in [some sort of ] business or employment. Knowledge isn’t suitable for you. 20 volumes is nothing! We read it to our shaykh twice (I think he was referring to his shaykh, al-Marṣafī) and on a third occasion we didn’t complete it.”
