“Old couple”
Otto Dix
The canvas was written at a time when the German painter was at the peak of his career. At this time, he actively cooperated with the gallery of Karl Nerendorf. It was a period of his personal and professional growth, and “The Old Couple” became one of the works that defined his artistic legacy.
The artist depicted an elderly couple whose faces and bodies reflect the marks of time and hard life. In their figures one can see not only physical withering, but also inner destruction. Otto Dix deliberately emphasized their wrinkles and imperfections, creating a grotesque image of old age.
The prototypes for the painting were real people whom the painter met in one of the Dresden brothels. It was there that he saw an elderly woman and her companion, whose images fell into his soul and inspired him to create this powerful and disturbing masterpiece. Otto Dix sought to show not just age, but the full weight of their years, reflected on their faces and bodies.

Pencil Sculptures
Jennifer Maestre was born in 1959 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. The urchin's spines, so dangerous yet beautiful, serve as a clear warning against contact.
The pencil sections represent aspects of sharpness and smoothness for two very different textural and aesthetic sensations. Paradox and surprise are integral to her choice of materials.
Pencils are ordinary objects, here they become structure. And sometimes there is a real fragility and vulnerability in the brutal aspect of the sculptures!
