"Self-portrait with a damaged eye"

Francis Bacon, 1972.

There was an occasion in the artist's life when he nearly lost an eye. One of his lovers, Peter Lacey, gave him a severe beating. However, he had broken up with Lacey long before he painted Self-Portrait with a Damaged Eye. So what did the author want to tell us with his work? "Solace (Death)"

Pyotr Stakhevich, 1883-1885.

Stakhevich also gave the painting a second title, "Death," leaving no doubt as to what kind of figure is depicted in the center of this enigmatic composition. These two titles make it clear that death, who covers the empty bed with a white shroud, is shown here as a friend who comes to put an end to human anxiety.
