“Murder after the masquerade”

Pavel Yakovlev, 1897.

Masquerades were a popular entertainment in past centuries. They were originally held only at court, but later became more public. Anyone could get to a masquerade by buying a ticket. Women were sometimes admitted for free. Unfortunate. She was probably a victim of swindlers who did not want to pay for love for sale and preferred to simply get rid of an unwanted companion. Next to the corpse you can see the roses plucked - a dramatic touch.

Ludwig van Beethoven or A Kiss in a Big World

Alois Kolb, 1900.

In this painting, the artist captures the essence of two profound themes: the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven and the profound intimacy of a kiss. Set against a background that seems infinitely expansive, the painting draws the viewer into a world where time stands still and emotion reigns supreme.

"The Pond"

Aron Wiesenfeld, 2023.

His mystical and eerie paintings depict children, teenagers and young adults - orphans, the lost, victims of violence, loners. The faces seem inanimate, and the bodies and plasticity of movement seem puppet-like. And what else can a child be, who has suffered more sorrows than any other adult? In addition to the actual theme, Aron's works are undoubtedly distinguished by their execution, especially the light, aesthetics and strange images.

"The Court of the Madhouse"

Francisco Goya, 1794.

By the time he completed this work, Goya was already a well-recognized artist who had received a great many commissions from very wealthy patrons. He did not have to paint additional pictures to make ends meet, but during that period of his career he created about a dozen rather gloomy paintings. They testified to his not-so-good mental state at the time.

"Dora and the Minotaur"

Pablo Picasso, 1936.

The Minotaur for Picasso has always been the character in which he reflected his alter ego, and in this work the artist captures a particular phase of his personal life - the passionate relationship with his new lover, Dora Maar.

“The Bait”

John Byam Liston Shaw, 1906.

The main character of the picture is a young widow. The woman lost her spouse early, but due to her youth, does not really want to be in mourning all the time and visits the cemetery only out of a sense of duty. During one of the visits, the heroine sees a brightly dressed Cupid, who hides a bow and arrow under his hoodie. The trickster tries to lure the young woman out of the cemetery and draw her into a love adventure. The picture is not as simple as it seems at first glance. If you look closely at Cupid, you can see that his halo is not real. Most likely, the artist is hinting that the love relationship the heroine wants to enter into will be a deception and a sham, which will end up in suffering for her.

“Weasels”

Fernand Hnopf, 1986.

During the prosperity of nineteenth-century Belgium and imitation artists, Fernand Hnopf decided to follow his own creative path. The Belgian artist was not interested in illustrating the world as it was. Instead, he focused on symbolic depictions of his favorite themes: emptiness, doomed love, and abandonment. Hnopf worked in a variety of techniques: paints, pastels, and pencil. He was also a sculptor. He constructed his art like enigmas, leaving clues and symbols for the viewer to try to interpret his worlds.

“Slave for Sale”

José Jiménez Aranda, ca. 1897 г.

The heroine of the painting, a young slave girl is offered as a commodity in an oriental market. The fully naked girl, chastely lowering her head to hide her shame, sits on a rug. The sign on her chest is a price tag. It reads in Greek: “Rose, 18 years old, sold for 800 coins.” Behind her we see the feet of possible buyers crowding around her, contemplating her defenseless nakedness.

"The Witch"

Edgar Bundy, 1896.

Bundy had no formal education, but learned some of his craft in the studio of Alfred Stevens. Bundy specialized in historical oil and watercolor paintings, usually in a highly detailed and narrative style, a genre that was very popular in the Edwardian time in which Bundy lived.

"Dangerous Liaisons"

René Magritte, 1926.

In his paintings, he created a world of fantasy and dreams out of real things, immersing viewers in an atmosphere of reverie and mystery. The artist was brilliantly able to "direct" their feelings. It would seem that the world created by the artist is static and solid, but always the unreal invades the ordinary, destroying this familiar world.

"The Seven Ages of Woman"

Hans Baldung Green, 1544.

The exaggeration of the anatomical structure of the figures is an anti-classical trait; using elements of the grotesque, the master endows the images with powerful expression. Despite the realistic treatment of individual details and the spatial construction of the composition, Baldung's works seem to belong to the world of the late Middle Ages, the world of legends and allegories.

"Still Life with Peacocks"

Rembrandt van Rijn, 1639.

Rembrandt could not but pay tribute to the genre of still life, which was widespread and fashionable at that time in Holland. This painting is one of the few works by the painter in this genre, but even in it Rembrandt achieved a remarkable psychologism.
