Quentin Massys “The Ugly Duchess,” 1513.

What is the basic intent and joke of the painting? Massais reinforces his sarcasm not only by the ugliness of the old woman, but also by her outfit and details of her behavior. The headdress on the woman is the height of fashion at the turn of the 16th century, a hint that despite her advanced age, the lady still wants to remain fashionable. The hat is complemented by a neckline, from which the old lady's faded charms peek out. So the person clearly wants to draw attention to herself, which always looks ridiculous.
The portrait is considered an artist's fantasy. However, there is an assumption that the heroine still had a prototype. This is Countess Marguerite, who in 1335-1365 years ruled the independent Tyrolean county. However, there are no images of Marguerite. Contemporaries called her either beautiful or ugly, so there is no unequivocal opinion.

"Infinity"

Sculpture by contemporary artist Anthony James from the Portals series, consists of titanium, glass and LED lights.

I note that all other series of James' work is typical, where the "concept" prevails over both the content and its artistic execution.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that this work, as well as the entire Portals series, was inspired by Plato's Dialogues, primarily the dialog Timaeus

"Cheerleaders"

Norman Rockwell, 1952.

The illustrator depicted cheerleaders sitting in shock after a game. The home team lost to their opponents by only one point, but it's still a loss, so the girls are confused and depressed. They obviously did not expect such a result.

Sculptural novels where beauty meets chaos

Petah Koin is an artist whose works are not just sculptures, but a novel written in the language of materials, where beauty and destruction, life and death are woven together in an intricate pattern.

These are not just aesthetic objects, they are powerful statements about the female experience, the fragility of life and the inevitability of change. They make us think about the complex relationship between beauty and ugliness, life and death, strength and weakness!

“The Execution of Jane Grey”

Paul Delaroche, 1833.

Jane Grey was popularly nicknamed “the queen of nine days”. Despite her monarchical origins, she was only fourth in line among all the heirs to the throne, so she did not have a high chance of succeeding to the throne. At the time, 15-year-old Edward VI was in power, and the direct heir to the throne was his older sister Mary. But the terminally ill king appointed Jane, who shared the Protestant faith with him, as his successor. After the monarch's death, Jane was on the throne for only nine days. Mary led a rebellion, which ended successfully for her. And Jane Grey was executed with her husband.

“Death playing the violin”

Frans Franken the Younger, 1625.

The subject of the painting is the so-called Dance of Death, a late medieval artistic genre intended to remind viewers of the inevitability of death. Such paintings most often depicted skeletons dancing either by themselves or with living people. Sometimes the story takes place in a cemetery, sometimes just on the street or anywhere else.

“The Bait”

John Byam Liston Shaw, 1906.

The main character of the picture is a young widow. The woman lost her spouse early, but due to her youth, does not really want to be in mourning all the time and visits the cemetery only out of a sense of duty. During one of the visits, the heroine sees a brightly dressed Cupid, who hides a bow and arrow under his hoodie. The trickster tries to lure the young woman out of the cemetery and draw her into a love adventure. The picture is not as simple as it seems at first glance. If you look closely at Cupid, you can see that his halo is not real. Most likely, the artist is hinting that the love relationship the heroine wants to enter into will be a deception and a sham, which will end up in suffering for her.

“Weasels”

Fernand Hnopf, 1986.

During the prosperity of nineteenth-century Belgium and imitation artists, Fernand Hnopf decided to follow his own creative path. The Belgian artist was not interested in illustrating the world as it was. Instead, he focused on symbolic depictions of his favorite themes: emptiness, doomed love, and abandonment. Hnopf worked in a variety of techniques: paints, pastels, and pencil. He was also a sculptor. He constructed his art like enigmas, leaving clues and symbols for the viewer to try to interpret his worlds.

“Slave for Sale”

José Jiménez Aranda, ca. 1897 г.

The heroine of the painting, a young slave girl is offered as a commodity in an oriental market. The fully naked girl, chastely lowering her head to hide her shame, sits on a rug. The sign on her chest is a price tag. It reads in Greek: “Rose, 18 years old, sold for 800 coins.” Behind her we see the feet of possible buyers crowding around her, contemplating her defenseless nakedness.

"The Conclusion"

Alexandra Buchkuri, 1936.

A husband who suspected his wife of infidelity tied her naked to a harnessed horse and drove her around the village, whipping her with a whip. The locals also participated in this process, laughing at the unfortunate woman, calling her names and pelting her with stones and sticks. The saddest thing about this situation is that the woman being bullied could have been innocent. She could have been lied to by envious people or other ill-wishers, someone could have misunderstood something, or maybe the husband himself wanted to get rid of his unwanted wife in this way.

“The Eunuch's Dream”

Jean-Jules Antoine Lecomte du Nouy, 1874.

The man holds a large opium pipe in his hand, so we can safely assume that all his visions appeared under the influence of this intoxicating substance.Next to the naked beauty can be seen an infant who holds a knife - a symbol of castration. It is this instrument that was used to circumcise the flesh, and it is this instrument that forever deprived the eunuch of his masculinity.Despite the fact that the hero is surrounded by luxury goods, the viewer realizes that he is deeply unhappy at heart. He is trapped: trapped both in his mutilated body and in de facto slavery far from his homeland and his loved ones.

“The Punishment of the Gossip Girl”

Salvador Díaz Ignacio Ruiz de Olano, 1910.

The heroines are clearly gossiping, and the object of their gossip is apparently a lady in a bright lilac dress walking away in the background of the painting. But, as we know, any act has consequences, which is what happened to one of the gossipers. The slanderer was punished by her own dog, who went to the hem of her dress to do a little need. Surprisingly, the dog owner was so engrossed in gossiping that she didn't even notice that she was being punished.

“Murder after the masquerade”

Pavel Yakovlev, 1897.

Masquerades were a popular entertainment in past centuries. They were originally held only at court, but later became more public. Anyone could get to a masquerade by buying a ticket. Women were sometimes admitted for free. Unfortunate. She was probably a victim of swindlers who did not want to pay for love for sale and preferred to simply get rid of an unwanted companion. Next to the corpse you can see the roses plucked - a dramatic touch.
