The most terrifying painting of the Middle Ages "Dead Lovers"

The painting was painted in the 15th century. The name of the artist has not survived, in manner today it is attributed to an anonymous man nicknamed the Master of Ulm.

It strikes with its unusual approach to the nude body: what should be supposed to excite and delight the eye, here turned into a real horror.

Since the subjects are not young handsome men, but shriveled old men, and it seems that they are already being devoured by grave worms (despite the quite lively expression of their eyes).

For us, such a depiction of a woman and a man is usually associated with Adam and Eve - and traditionally such paintings serve to glorify human beauty. But not in the case of our Dead Lovers, which contrasts with the template in an even more shocking way.

The idea behind this medieval allegorical painting was to remind whoever looked at it: life is decay. We are all going to die, and soon enough.

The viewer, looking at this ugliness, was supposed to meditate on the fact that everything earthly is vanity, vanity of vanities. Including the body, youth, health.

The horror of the picture is increased by the fact that the eyes of the characters are still burning with reason, but their bodies are already being eaten by insects, snakes and worms.

The toothless woman's dried-up breasts hang down in the most pathetic way, and a huge toad - a symbol of nastiness and abomination - sits on her bosom.

England's most mystical picture

Almost 39 years ago, in the mid-80's, in England there was a series of unexplained fires, associated with various factors and circumstances, accompanied by human casualties. As it turned out later, all tragic events were united by one thing - in all cases in the premises there was a reproduction of one of the paintings by Giovanni Bragolin, which remained untouched by fire.

The attention of the British to the mysterious fact attracted a fireman from Yorkshire named Peter Hall, in his interview reported that throughout the North of England fire brigades find on the sites of fires untouched by fire copies of paintings Bragolina. Unheard of panic gripped the country. Frightened to death ordinary people firmly decided: “offended and angry at the whole world kids take revenge on this soulless, cruel society. It was not for nothing that after each fire, among the embers they found a portrait of a crying baby unharmed and unharmed, with not even a trace of soot on it.

In November 1985, the editorial staff of The Sun decided to organize a mass demonstration burning of the images of the crying baby collected from the citizens, with the involvement of television. The action was held on a vacant lot outside the city, where a huge bonfire was set up, in which all the remaining copies were burned.

After the act of burning, the British froze in anticipation of something catastrophic. However, days, weeks, years passed, and there were no more mass fires. “Crying Boy”, having burned in the fire, stopped taking revenge on people. With the passage of time, the gruesome story began to be forgotten. The only things left are old newspaper folders, which remind us of it to this day.
