The Crust is the outermost solid part of the earth. It is brittle in nature. The thickness of the crust varies under the oceanic and continental areas. Oceanic crust is thinner as compared to the continental crust. The mean thickness of the oceanic crust is 5 km whereas that of the continental is around 30 km. The continental crust is thicker in the areas of major mountain systems. It is as much as 70 km thick in the Himalayan region.
Oceanic crust is primarily composed of mafic rocks, or sima, which is rich in iron and magnesium. It is denser, having a mean density of about 3.0 grams per cubic centimeter as opposed to the continental crust which has a density of about 2.7 grams per cubic centimeter. Along with Oceanic and Continental plate margins, the oceanic lithosphere subducts because the continental lithosphere is less dense and lighter than Oceanic crust.
Although the core and mantle are about equal in thickness, the core forms only 15 percent of the Earth's volume, whereas the mantle occupies 84 percent. The crust makes up the remaining 1 percent. It is a thin shell on the outside of the Earth.
