Pairs and small flocks are uncommon or local in semi-arid, rocky country in Et and So, up to 1700m, often near cliffs and gathering to feed in Salvadora bushes.

Hartlaub’s Bustard
Lissotis hartlaubii
Male
is more thickset and crisply marked than Black-bellied Bustard. Identified by white ‘thumb print’ over ear-coverts which contrasts with blacker face, thicker silvery-grey-backed neck, and black rump and barred dark brown tail.Pairs and family parties are patchily distributed in C&SEt in drier bushed grassland and open plains up to 1800m; rare in S&NWSo. Tends to prefer shorter grass and less dense vegetation than Black-bellied. Male has striking parachute display similar to Black-bellied.

Turdoides plebejus
Rather plain grey-brown babber with yellow eyes, whitish lores and chin, and pale tips to feathers of throat and breast. Immature is brown all over, paler below without pale tips on throat and breast, with brown eyes. Groups are frequent to locally common in SWEt (race cinerea) in bushed and wooded country at 700–1400m.

[Alt: Brown Parrot]
Two races occur.Pairs and small parties are locally common in riparian woodland below 2200m; associated with baobab and tamarind in Er.Adult is mainly grey-brown on head and upperparts with green (or bluish-green) rump and lower breast to vent, bright yellow band on forecrown, shoulders and underwing-coverts. Close views reveal wholly dark bill and brown-red eyes.

Singles and pairs are common and widespread in Et (except SE) and SSo, from sealevel to 2100m in wide range of bushed grassland and open woodland, often far from water; rather rare in Er and NWSo. Avoids very arid areas.Sexes similar, although male has black band on underwing (seen when flashes open wings in display), and greyer crown than female. In rapid direct flight shows turquoise-blue back, rump and tail.

[Alt: Thick-billed Weaver]
Occurs singly or in small flocks in swamps, but also in forest edge, riverine bush and overgrown cultivation, from sea-level to 1800m. Always breeds over water: nest is a finely woven fibrous dome with entrance near top. Large stocky weaver with very thick bill. Adult male has variable plumage: in race melanota (W&CEt), head is brown contrasting with blacker mantle, wings, tail and underparts; in unicolor (SSo) males are all blackish-brown. All forms have small white patch at base of primaries and often patch of white on forecrown. Female and immature are brown above with no white in wing, heavily streaked brown and white below, and have huge yellowish-horn bill,.

Common at wide range of
waters, including alkaline and freshwater lakes, flooded fields and coastal lagoons up to 3300m.Breeds regularly in Et and Soc. Numbers increase from Aug–Apr, presumably Palearctic migrants.Tall elegant black and white wader with thin bill and very long pinkish-red legs. In adult, crown and hindneck vary from pure white to white with variable amounts of dark-grey.

Small flocks are generally frequent to
common wanderers in dry bush country (especially Commiphora) from near sea-level to 2000m, and often associate with other rufous-bellied starlings. Apparently resident in much of Et, but breeding visitor to NSo, Apr–Sep, and non-breeding visitor to SSo. Adult is richer and darker than both Superb and Chestnut-bellied Starlings with orange or orange-red eyes and very dark rufous belly. Head, breast and upperparts largely glossy violet blue. Immature has head and mantle dull ash-brown.
