White-winged Cliff Chat
Thamnolaea semirufa
ENDEMIC to Er and Et. Pairs are frequent to common in highlands, at 1500–2500m, in mountain gorges and on rocky slopes, as well as borders of forest; rare in Er.Adult male is very like Mocking Cliff Chat but has small white patch at base of primaries rather than on shoulder, more obvious in flight. Female is mainly brownish-black with white wing-patch; belly and vent finely fringed buff or orange.

Two races occur,Pairs and singles are common and widespread from sea-level to 2700m, occurring beside all types of water where fringed with vegetation. Most frequent in Rift Valley and west of it; some local movements appear to occur, but are not well known.Immature is similar, with shorter black bill, brownish rufous underparts and whitish belly.

Widespread and often common in semi-arid bush country, wooded grasslands and gardens in Rift Valley and lowlands of WEt and Er, at 400–1500m.Breeding male has red centre to breast bordered by large yellow patches at sides, and long narrow central tail feathers.

large striding grey and black bird with a bare orange-red face, thick eagle-like bill, long crest on nape, long legs with black leggings, and long narrow central tail. Sexes alike but female has duller facial skin.Singles, pairs and pairs with young are scarce to rare in open bushed and wooded grasslands from near sea-level to 3150m, throughout most of Er and Et (except SE) and NWSo.

immature is dark brown above with rufous fringes, whitish supercilium, heavy spots on breast and barred flanks (often has pale nape and some have dark mesial stripe). are dark-eyed and also heavily marked, but with spots not bars. Three races occur: Singles are widespread but uncommon in wide range of forest, woodland and gardens, from sea-level to 3300m.

ENDEMIC to Er and Et. Pairs and small groups are common residents in woodland and forest in highlands up to 2750m. Adult male has red band on forehead (not extending onto chin). Adult female lacks red on forehead. In flight, male has black underwing-coverts, female green.
