On the other hand, Real Madrid had a penalty overturned. How the turntables. The 31-year-old striker also surpassed Manchester United great Wayne Rooney for most goals by an Englishman in the Champions League. Kane has 29 goals before last night, and is now on 33; three better than “Wazza”.Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win? Bayern Munich v Dinamo Zagreb - UEFA Champions League Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images Sometimes it really is that simple Sometimes the better team just gains the momentum in a match and uses it to steamroll the opposition. Bayern Munich’s incredible 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb certainly demonstrated the fickle nature of momentum and its’ helpful nature, as a sudden loss of momentum found Bayern nearly giving up a 3 goal lead within a few minutes, before riding a wave to coast to the final 9-2 scoreline. Bayern’s official website captured Zagreb’s coach Sergej Jakirović detailing how it all went down: “It was a difficult evening for us. Bayern are in a different league. We didn’t play well in the first half and Bayern didn’t give much away. After half-time, we got it back to 3-2 and had the chance to equalise. However, we were inferior physically and Bayern recognised the spaces. We were punished for every mistake we made. It’s a lesson for us. Bayern were on a top level. Congratulations on the win.”A job well done later, Bayern can sit back and enjoy the momentous win.Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Bayern Munich was unstoppable. Die Folgen: Bayern’s 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb (Bavarian Football Works)Well...that was never close. Bayern Munich thrashed Dinamo Zagreb in a match that the Bavarians dominated from start-to-finish. Dinamo Zagreb did not offer much resistance and really just wanted to try and limit damage. That would prove to be a tall task against a sturdy Bayern Munich side. Here are some quick hitters on Bayern Munich’s 9-2 victory over the Croatian power. As always, let’s take a look at Vincent Kompany’s starting lineup: - #packmas #FCBDIN pic.twitter.com/lWAyOI9a4h— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) September 17, 2024The only real questions coming into the match regarding the lineup were at wing and left-back, but an unconventional set-up threw all of the positions out of whack. Kompany went with Alphonso Davies, Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry, Raphaël Guerreiro, and Aleksandar Pavlović as the coach got funky with his lineup. The formation functioned like a back-three in the build-up with Davies getting higher up the pitch, so the traditional set-up and positions went out the window. Dinamo Zagreb played very conservatively (and for good reason). The deep-sitting block shut down many shooting lanes for the Bavarians. Bayern Munich controlled possession and — after a VAR review — was awarded a penalty on a foul on Pavlović. Oddly, it was a double-VAR review where an offside call nullified a goal from Serge Gnabry, but did rewind even further to the Pavlović foul. Harry Kane eventually deposited the penalty kick into the net for a 1-0 Bayern Munich lead in the 19th minute.Later in the first half, a good, lofted ball in from Davies found Musiala, who chested it over to Guerreiro. The Portuguese international unleashed a rocket of a volley into the net for a 2-0 lead. Bayern Munich was thoroughly dominant, which made the game lack any real energy. Dinamo Zagreb looked resigned to its fate and was only hoping to keep the tally count to a somewhat non-embarrassing total. In the 38th minute, a short corner from Musiala to Kimmich resulted in a nice, lofted cross, which Olise put into the net for a 3-0 lead. At that point, Dinamo Zagreb could have started the busses. The second half started out with a bit of a shocker as Dinamo Zagreb took advantage of some lax defending from Dayot Upamecano and Guerreiro. Bruno Petković, who said he did not care about scoring against Bayern, did the deed. Bayern Munich, which had subbed in Sven Ulreich, was clearly playing flat in front of Ulreich. Seconds later, Zagreb made it 3-2 after taking advantage of Upamecano and Guerreiro again. This time it was Takuya Ogiwara who got the goal. Kane banged home a rebound from a shot by Kimmich to make it 4-2 in the 57th minute, while Olise added another in the 61st minute to make it 5-2. It was not a great showing for Kim Min-jae and Upamecano. Dier came on for Min-jae in the 69th minute. I cannot shake the feeling that Min-jae and Upamecano are going to be a shaky pairing against better teams. Kane added another PK in the 73rd minute for the hat-trick, which made for about as ho-hum a three-goal performance as you will ever see...but you know what? That’s okay, we’ll take it! Why stop there, though? In what can only be described as insanity, Bayern Munich was awarded another PK in the 77th minute when Davies had his foot stomped on in the box. Kane stepped up and hit his third penalty of the night and his fourth goal of the game. Hey...Leon Goretzka subbed in! Max Eberl probably texted Christoph Freund immediately with “Wer hat ihn auf das Spielfeld gelassen?”Leroy Sané added yet another goal in the 85th minute to make it 8-2 (maybe a final familiar to FC Barcelona).Goretzka, though, scored an absolutely stunning, running header to make it 9-2 and kill off the match. It was a terrific effort from Goretzka and a perfect delivery from Kimmich. Somewhere, Eberl punched a wall. Overall, Bayern Munich put a shellacking…

The Bavarians three-upped their weekend performance, a 6-1 Bundesliga win over Holstein Kiel, to smash a Dinamo Zagreb team that to their credit did come to put up a fight. Maybe they shouldn’t have, though, as the two Zagreb goals in the second half, which momentarily cut the Bayern lead to 3-2, seemed to ignite a fire and fury in the home side...who did not rest until the final whistle. The final score was 9-2.Quick hitters from a thoroughly enjoyable match:Dinamo goalkeeper Ivan Nevistić had a game full of amazing saves. You wouldn’t know it from the scoreline, nor expect it from a game where Bayern nearly got to double digits. But the Bavarians did also have 19 shots on goal. How many offside goals can you score in a game? Bayern: Yes. (The final count was three? Four?)The Hansi Flick comparisons will continue for Bayern coach Vincent Kompany — in the best of ways. This was pure end-to-end chaos. Get the feeling many Bayern fans will take the concessions if that’s the price to pay for this amount of firepower.Good guy Leon Goretzka, ensuring 8-2 is a scoreline that remains enshrined in association with FC Barcelona…Great to see both Goretzka and Leroy Sané scoring on their returns, and what goals they were. England v Finland - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League B Group B2 Photo by Eddie Keogh - The FA/The FA via Getty Images The English captain got well acquainted with the back of the net. What a night for Harry Kane. After teasing Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga goals record last season, the Bayern Munich striker is off on a tear in 2024/25. Kane has four goals in three Bundesliga games to open the year, and ripped off four more in a single game in Bayern’s Champions League opener, a 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday. The England captain enjoyed official MOTM honors for the effort — but stressed the need for even better performances going forward.Harry Kane with his Player of the Match award pic.twitter.com/4VrnEroZUG— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 17, 2024“Amazing game,” Kane reflected in his post-match interview (as captured by DAZN, via @iMiaSanMia). “The first half was really good, we took our chances. We didn’t start the second half well and got caught in a couple of second balls. We’ll have to learn from that. But the reaction afterwards was really good. It’s great to score all these goals. Today we got away with that bad start of the second half, but against top opposition we could get punished for that.”Instead, it was Dinamo Zagreb who got punished this time — Bayern pouring on the pressure relentlessly after a second half lapse saw the scoreline cut to 3-2.By the time the dust settled, Kane had scored three penalties — all three tucked away into the left corner behind Ivan Nevistić. For Kane and for Bayern, it was a Champions League night to savor. But as they well know, the campaign is only just getting started.Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win? FC Bayern Munich - Dinamo Zagreb Photo by Peter Kneffel/picture alliance via Getty Images 11 goals scored in a spectacular fashion to start off Bayern Munich’s Champions League campaign. A roller-coaster of a match may have had some Bayern Munich fans calling for head coach Vincent Kompany’s sacking at 3-2... but it was nothing but euphoria when the dust settled and the Bavarians emerged victorious at 9-2. These games do not usually prove to be a challenge for Bayern but it was an exciting to start to the new Champions League for Bayern Munich.Kompany ball continues to show its defensive cracksFor a second there, Bayern looked like it was going to have a full collapse after conceding two quick goals to make the game 3-2. Defense has not been Bayern’s strong suit in some years now, but it is certainly something Kompany and team will need to improve. Clearly, the team has no issues in confidence though.Welcome to the Harry Kane showKane racked up 4 goals on the night, three coming from the penalty spot. Kane wants some silverware badly this season and he is well on his way for at least the personal accolade of being the competition’s top goalscorer after this match. What a performance.Olise finally getting in his grooveMichael Olise has shown signs of brilliance so far this season, but the young winger had not done enough yet to prove his worth until this match. Picking up two goals in his Champions League debut could be the start of a big rise for the Frenchman. Olise has massive potential and Bayern will need to fulfill it in order to fight for this season’s title.Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win? FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Can’t wait to see the defense collapse again and Dier pick up all the pieces...again What is it like to be Eric Dier, one wonders? First he gets frozen out of his long time club Tottenham Hotspur, sold on for a pittance to Bayern Munich of all clubs, planned to be a backup only to become the club’s defensive lynchpin and lead the Bavarians into a Champions League semifinal by beating hated London rivals Arsenal FC. And now he is back on the bench. Throughout the first four matches of the season in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal at the time of writing, the experienced Englishman has just 9 minutes of football. But the season is still so very young and the need for him is still there.Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund certainly seems to think the above, as he answers Bild reporter Michel Schröer’s query on Dier’s lack of game time, as captured by @iMiaSanMia: “He’s training really well and is a real professional. We’re very happy to have him. We will still need him.”It is pertinent to remember that Dier also started his career at Bayern glued to the bench, only to grow in importance as the season progressed. There is little to suggest the same could not happen again.

FC Bayern München v GNK Dinamo - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD1 Photo by Daniel Kopatsch/Getty Images That’s one way to protest the new Champions League format. Bayern Munich shocked the world with an unprecedented nine-goal performance in the Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb. There has been much speculation regarding how the bigger clubs like Bayern, Manchester City, and Real Madrid might approach the new league phase format. Bayern clearly plans to annihilate every opponent in its path. After the match (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich CEO said, “I’m pleased that we played a good game and got off to such a good start. When we conceded two goals, I got a little nervous in the stands, but in the end, the joy prevailed. Today was exceptional. I hope the win will put us first in the table in the new league format. We all have to get used to the new format, of course, but the goal difference is certainly important. It’s noticeable that we have good energy and you can also tell from those who aren’t playing that they support the team and that we have a good atmosphere overall.” Winning by seven goals is probably overkill, but if that eventually gives Bayern a slightly better seeding in the knockout rounds then it will be considered worthwhile.Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win? FC Bayern München v GNK Dinamo - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD1 Photo by Daniel Kopatsch/Getty Images Harry Kane; what a striker. What a player! It was a massive night for Bayern Munich in their maiden Champions League group stage match of the season, thumping Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 at the Allianz Arena. It was Bayern’s largest ever win in the competition and they were once again spearheaded by a four-goal outing from England skipper Harry Kane. Elsewhere, goals came from Michael Olise (2), Raphaël Guerreiro, Leroy Sané, and Leon Goretzka. Having gone into the break 3-0 up, the writing was already on the wall for Vincent Kompany’s side to go on and win in triumphant fashion, but they had to survive an early scare when Zagreb scored two goals in as many minutes to start the second half. Sven Ulreich came on for Manuel Neuer at the break and made a crucial stop when it was 3-2 to spare Bayern’s blushes before Kane netted Bayern’s 4th goal on the night and tilted momentum back to the Rekordmeister.Despite a complete team performance, Kane was the man of the hour with his four goals, a tally that saw him become the highest ever English goal scorer in the Champions League. He now has 33 goals in the competition and surpassed Wayne Rooney’s previous mark of 30. “Whenever you’re in a conversation with Wayne Rooney it means you’re doing something well. He’s one of the greatest English players and one of the best players there was in the game. It’s a nice achievement,” Kane explained after the match to UEFA tv (via @iMiaSanMia). This was also Kane’s second consecutive hat-trick, having bagge three goals in Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga last weekend. Since he has joined from Tottenham last summer, Kane has now recorded a total of 6 hat-tricks for Bayern and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down any time soon. After the big win over Zagreb, he admitted that he does like to hang on to the match balls he collects after scoring hat-tricks. “I keep all the balls after hat-tricks, the lads might be sick of signing them but keep them coming. My son Louis, he loves playing football right now, he’s only three but I’ll take it home and put it next to his bed and he’ll be happy when he wakes up in the morning,” he jubilantly admitted. FC Bayern München v GNK Dinamo - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD1 Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Manuel Neuer escaped a major injury but will certainly feel it in the morning. Bayern Munich got off to a hot start in the Champions League, defeating Dinamo Zagreb 9-2. Bayern controlled the match for the entire first half as they cruised to a 3-0 lead heading into the locker room.Early in the match, Bayern captain Manuel Neuer flew out of the box for one of his patented sweeper keeper clearances near midfield. Unfortunately, Neuer collided with Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Josip Mišić and Neuer found himself flipped upside down for a disastrous fall.Neuer laid on the pitch for a couple minutes but eventually got back up under his own power. Luckily, he didn’t have to make any saves and was eventually subbed off at halftime. His replacement, Sven Ulreich, immediately conceded two goals to put the game in doubt.Bayern fans were concerned to see a midgame goalkeeper substitution, but it appears that it was more of a safety decision. In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said, “It was a precaution. We didn’t want to take any risks.”In a postgame interview with Maximilian Koch (via @iMiaSanMia), Neuer said, “It’s nothing serious.” Neuer affirmed that he plans to play in this weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen.Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win? FC Bayern München v GNK Dinamo - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD1 Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Bayern Munich is invincible in the pre-knockout stages of the Champions League. In the opening match of the inaugural “league phase” of the Champions League, Bayern Munich buried Dinamo Zagreb with an explosive 9-2 demolition. Harry Kane scored a hat-trick on penalty kicks alone and added another tap in off a rebound. Even Leon Goretzka climbed out of the dog house to deliver a powerful header to close out the match. After a dominating first half, Bayern temporarily allowed Dinamo Zagreb to get back into the game with consecutive goals. The Bavarians recovered and turned on the afterburners as the offense ruthlessly delivered six second half goals.Bayern’s relentless attack is reminiscent of the 2020 campaign under Hansi Flick that resulted in the sextuplet of titles — including the Champions League. There appears to be no limit to this team’s ceiling.Jersey Swap: Bruno PetkovićPetković opened the scoring line for Dinamo Zagreb in the 48th minute, but it was an otherwise embarrassing performance for the rest of the squad. Petković also won six out of nine ground duels and seven out of nine aerial duels.Der Kaiser: Raphaël GuerreiroWith injuries to Josip Stanišić and Sacha Boey, Guerreiro stepped into the right-back position beautifully. Guerreiro was tasked with filling the attacking half space between Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise, plus tracking back to cover the random bursts forward by Takuya Ogiwara. Guerreiro cleaned up a lot of close calls in the box that should have been handled by Dayot Upamecano and Min-jae Kim.In the 33rd minute, Guerreiro ripped a half volley from the top of the box into the top corner, leaving Dinamo Zagreb goalkeeper Ivan Nevistić stuck in the mud. Fußballgott: Aleksandar PavlovićKimmich had a great game and two assists to boot, but Pavlović covered a lot of ground and controlled the center of the pitch from start to finish. Pavlović successfully completed 100 out of 103 passes, often leading the wingers into dangerous attacking positions. Pavlović’s endless hustle has invigorated the rest of Bayern’s midfield and will serve as a beacon when things aren’t going Bayern’s way.Der Bomber: Michael OliseBefore Olise scored his first career Champions League goal, he was already giving the Dinamo Zagreb defense fits with his stop-and-go dribbling. The constant change in tempo kept the opposition on the back foot and forced the back five to stay in the defensive shell.Moving forward, Olise’s unpredictable attacking style will be difficult for managers to scheme against from a tactical perspective. Bonus credit to Bayern’s management team for identifying Olise and signing him before the Olympics.Meister of the Match: Jamal MusialaMusiala was by far the best player on the pitch. The assists to Guerreiro and Olise were absolutely sublime. His movement in the second half was unmatched as he zigzagged all over the pitch.Sure, Harry Kane scored a poacher’s quad with three penalty kick conversions, which is unique in its own right. But that singular stat fails to reflect Kane’s lack of influence on the overall game. (Bonus stat: Kane has now scored more Champions League goals (33) than any other Englishman.)After Dinamo Zagreb stormed back with two quick goals to open the second half, it was Musiala who more than anyone put the team on his back and willed Bayern to victory. He has been a man on a mission all season and tonight was no different. Need to hear more about Bayern’s historic win?
