However despite match dominance, Die Mannschaft could not find the back of the net again.On the opposing side, timeless wonder Edin Džeko (now at Fenerbahçe) got one back midway through the second half but it was not enough to turn the tide. That is correct, just months after being let go from Bayern Munich, Tuchel might be ready to dip his toes back into the coaching water. Bosnia and Herzegovina v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty Images Germany probably should have shown more from most of the dominance they had throughout proceedings. They had to hold on for what was a bit too close for comfort, but Germany beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 away from home in the UEFA Nations League thanks to a first half brace from VfB Stuttgart’s Denis Undav. The attacker now has three goals from his last two matches for Die Mannschaft. However, Julian Nagelsmann certainly would have been concerned with the late concession of the two-goal cushion when Fenerbache’s Edin Džeko scored in the 70th minute to make it a nervy closing twenty minutes for Germany.Both Undav and Serge Gnabry also had goals ruled out for offside decisions in the second half, either of which would have effectively killed the match and further dampened any hope of a comeback from the home side.With 74% of the possession when all was said and done and out-shooting Bosnia 12 to 8, Nagelsmann felt that his side should have shown more from their dominance despite coming away from home with a win. “We didn’t start so well and kept the ball on one side too much in the first ten minutes. When we adjusted that, it was good and we were dominant. Given our superiority, we could have scored more goals. Regarding the goal we conceded, Edin Dzeko shouldn’t be that free inside the box. But the team kept control after that. We didn’t want to take many risks,” the former Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Hoffenheim manager explained to RTL after the match (via @iMiaSanMia). Of course, it should be taken into consideration that Nagelsmann was not exactly spoiled for choice with his team selection and his starting eleven was far different from what it looked like just a few months ago at the European Championships on home soil. In addition to all of the injury absentees that were not originally called up to camp ahead of the pair of Nations League matches, all of Benjamin Henrich, David Raum, Robin Koch, Kai Havertz, and Jamal Musiala had to pull out of the squad through injury problems. Nagelsmann did not have a lot of his usual suspects and regulars, so he is forced to work with what he currently has and will be pleased to collect yet another win at the end of the day.

That is our philosophy. We want to push the opponents to limits that they cannot maintain.“It’s impressive, we’re growing more with every game. You can see the quality in the goals. It was truly a 2-1 victory that the squad will take and run with. The only position up for grabs was striker where Tim Kleindienst and Jonathan Burkardt were battling for time. Kleindienst got the nod for this match. One position to watch for the upcoming Netherlands match will be in the central midfielder where Aleksandar Pavlović is pushing for a starting role. As it turns out, Pavlović was nursing what appeared to be a calf injury. Germany’s first half was — as expected — very choppy. The game lacked flow, the midfield had trouble getting involved, and the attack was not overly scary. Kleindienst just could not get going, either. However, Denis Undav did ping home two goals (the second one was especially nice) to put Germany up 2-0. Even with all of the injuries, Germany was just more talented. The backline was fine, but it was rarely tested. Maximilian Mittelstädt lost possession more than I would like to see. Overall, Mittelstädt’s lost possession count was an Alphonso Davies-esque 20 times! Aside of that, Mittelstädt was very active and effective, but he needs to take better care of the ball. The second half was not really all that much better (but not worse...it was just that kind of game). Germany dominated, was never really threatened, and looked like it was just trying to get through the match with minimal damage so it could focus on Monday’s game vs. the Netherlands. Bosnia and Herzegovina did get on the scoreboard in the 70th minute Edin Džeko.Overall, it was very much a ho-hum, but necessary effort for Germany. This team is battling so many injuries (more players got hurt in this game) that it is hard to really knock them. In fact, they should be given credit for the flexibility and resilience they we were able to show. It was not pretty, but Germany got the job done. Ultimately, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann started Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich and Borussia Dortmund’s Pascal Groß as his central midfield pairing. Germany was banged up and broken, but it still was able to outlast Bosnia and Herzegovina for a 2-1 victory in UEFA Nations League action.Let’s get to it....There was a lack of chemistry, but don’t panicGermany literally cobbled together a lineup of any have-decent, non-injured players it could find and it was good enough. The squad controlled play and possession, but had trouble finding the right amout of synchronicity to dominate the scoreboard like it was dominating the possession clock. In the end, Julian Nagelsmann just wanted to lean on Florian Wirtz to be the leader of the group and create offense, which the Bayer Leverkusen man fully embraced.Deniz Undav is proving he deserves more timeUndav was a forgotten man during the EURO 2024 competition, but in the last two games, he has three goals and is versatile enough that he can slide into the No. 9 or No. 10 role.The VfB Stuttgart man is on a two-season tear now and not really showing many signs of slowing down. Playing for a Stuttgart side, which lost a lot of talent, Undav is getting a lot more attention placed on him — which could make him battle-tested for the rigors that lie ahead with the German national team. Aleksandar Pavlović will help the midfieldBayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović was a late scratch due to a calf issue or a knee issue depending on which report you believe (he has NO LUCK with the German national team...watch out for locusts to attack him in November). That said, when he does come back, he will make a big improvement on the central midfield. Pascal Groß and Robert Andrich were fine, but Pavlović’s passing and vision will be a huge upgrade, which should bolster the attack even more. If the goal was to learn about Alexander Nübel’s mettle, this did not accomplish anythingBayern Munich loanee Alexander Nübel had been waiting for this moment his entire life — a chance to lead the the German national team. Unfortunately for the goalkeeper, he could have bought a ticket and been just about as active as he was in between the sticks. Credited with zero saves and allowing one goal, Nübel did not get tested much at all (nor did the backline really, for what it is worth). Both the goalkeeper and defenders will need to start to show some progress ahead of the World Cup. There is a way to go, but the attack seems like it will be extremely dangerous...now the rest of the squad needs to catch up.

With a squad severely lacking in Bayern Munich players, Germany defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2-1, in the third matchday of UEFA Nations League. Germany used a quick passing attack to dominate possession and keep the Bosnians on their heels. Thanks to a favorable result in the other Group A3 match, Germany sit alone atop the group.The game was relatively uneventful until Florian Wirtz snuck behind the opponent’s defense in the 30th minute and gift wrapped a goal for Deniz Undav. Six minutes later, Maximilian Mittelstädt whipped in a beautiful cross to Undav to give Die Mannschaft an insurmountable lead. Edin Džeko scored a header in the 70th minute, but Bosnia and Herzegovina didn’t threaten Alexander Nübel for the rest of the match.Bayern loanee Nübel earned his first international start, while Jamal Musiala, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Leroy Sané all missed the match due to minor injuries.Jersey Swap: Edin DžekoAdmittedly, Džeko was largely ineffective tonight. But if you’ve ever played as a 38-year-old against guys who are fifteen years younger, then you understand how amazing it feels to score against an elite opponent in any league or competition. Džeko leads his country in caps and goals and he still knows how to get the job done.Der Kaiser: Maximilian MittelstädtA few days ago, David Raum left the German team with an injury. Mittelstädt immediately stepped in and played extremely well as the left-back. Germany’s tactical setup allowed Mittelstädt to roam freely and he consistently sent dangerous balls into the box, including his assist to Undav. He almost had another assist in the 58th minute, but Tim Kleindienst was barely offside (and missed the tap in, similar to Serge Gnabry against Aston Villa).Fußballgott: Robert AndrichWith the late scratch of Aleksandar Pavlović, Andrich was tasked with patrolling the midfield and controlling the pace of the game. In the 30th minute, Andrich delivered a beautiful ball to Wirtz that led to the opening goal. In the 35th minute, Andrich produced the play of the match when he chased down Ermedin Demirović and barely nudged him in the box to prevent an easy breakaway goal that would have tied the match.Der Bomber: Florian WirtzIn the early sluggish minutes of the game, Wirtz was visibly irritated that he wasn’t receiving the ball in the buildup. But then he slipped through the backline and laid off an easy goal for Undav to give Germany the lead. Wirtz is definitely a player that the offense needs to run through to be most effective.Meister of the Match: Deniz UndavAs attacking strategies become more focused on finesse players, Undav provides a healthy combination of brute physicality with spatial intuition. In today’s match, he consistently put a body on a defender to redirect the play and create offensive opportunities around the box. FIFA’s brand new Club World Cup, set to debut in 2025 and host the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, is set to change things in the footballing landscape. In part because of the introduction of a new tournament will always cause shockwaves, but also because this is a club tournament occurring between June and July. Such timing for a club tournament is completely unprecedented and requires, frankly, a lot of maneuvering to accommodate. One of those maneuvers will be to give participating clubs the option to open up a brand new transfer window, FIFA officially confirmed (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) following a FIFA council meeting in Zurich on Thursday:FIFA confirms it will allow member associations of participating clubs in the new Club World Cup to open their transfer window from 1 to 10 June 2025 so new signings can be registered before the tournament starts on 15 JuneBut that is not all. FIFA will also allow clubs to replace players whose contracts expire on June 30, with June 27-July 3 the window in which clubs can register emergency replacements. In Bayern’s case, if the likes of Joshua Kimmich or Leroy Sané were to leave on June 30, 2025, which upon the time of writing is the current expiry date of their contracts, the Bavarians would be able to add another two players to the roster in the given time period.But that still is not all. FIFA have also confirmed that they are now willing to forego the requirement that clubs release players to international tournaments this one time. Therefore, players who are eligible to play in both the Club World Cup and the Copa America, which occur at the same time, will have to choose which tournament to participate in. A notable Bavarian case here would be Alphonso Davies, who would have to choose between leading his country as their iconic talisman or participating in a tournament during which he may just end up leaving to Real Madrid. It is a real mess.BFW AnalysisIt is really difficult to see any of these announcements as anything but band aids for an impossible situation. Or worse, problems just waiting to occur. The Bundesliga, for example, ends on the 17th of May. The Premier League ends on the 25th of May. Will there be any time between the end of these competitions and the discussions for transfers in this new transfer window?Will players start diverting focus from the end of the season to discuss making a move to a club in the Club World Cup? What about players participating in the Nations League finals, which takes place between June 4-8? Will they be participating in finals and negotiate a transfer in their spare time? Will more cases like Dayot Upamecano’s happen?Even assuming transfer happen seamlessly, which is a very generous assumption, will players brought in during June really be able to get up to speed with the rest of the team in the week or two before the tournament starts? And if they have trouble getting up to speed, how will the players brought in during June 27 to July 3 fare? The tournament sounded disastrous when it was initially announced but time has only made it look worse and the measures taken to implement it continue to look more and more desperate. Latest in the Jamal Musiala saga, Max Eberl spoke on the youngsters value at the club. Was this a direct hint at his future?In a recent interview, Bayern Munich’s Sporting Director was asking about the ongoing negotiations with Jamal Musiala and his future at the club. “There was not just one meeting, we’re in talks. I’m very confident. Something is happening here and Jamal is noticing that too. He’s an exceptional player, and alongside Josh and a few others he should become a face of Bayern. We told the player that too. And now we are looking at how we can reach an agreement. I’m an optimist and I see no reason why he should leave Bayern,” said Eberl in response (captured by @iMiaSanMia).The club is definitely not hiding how valuable Musiala is, clearly doing everything they can to keep him at the club (for good reason). But will all this praising simply hike up his value? It looks like the club is willing to pay any amount of money to keep him at Säbener Straße, and after offloading the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, perhaps they have the budget for it too.

Bayern Munich’s João Palhinha sat down recently to have an interview with SportBild, as captured by @iMiaSanMia here and here. One of the questions he was asked was about his path to signing for Bayern, to which he responded like this: “I’m just enjoying it. It wasn’t an easy path till I finally arrived in Munich. Now it just feels good. And I think we can achieve a lot this season.”Interestingly, Palhinha revealed that a certain German teammate gave him info on the Bavarian giants: “I had an outstanding teammate and friend at Fulham in Bernd Leno. He told me good things about FC Bayern, just like everyone else I’ve talked with about this club.”It has been a long time since the name Bernd Leno has been relevant for a Bundesliga club. The German goalkeeper grew up in Stuttgart but most Bundesliga fans know him as Bayer Leverkusen’s No.1, who he switched to in 2011. However, in 2018 the bright lights of the Premier League called him. He first left to go to Arsenal FC and then later ended up at Fulham.
