FC Bayern München v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Will the Bayern Munich defense improve in the coming weeks? There has been a lot of criticism hurled over at Bayern Munich’s defense, specifically at center-backs Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae. For Vincent Kompany, it comes with the territory. Yes, he hears it (and maybe reads it, too), but Kompany will not lose any sleep over a situation that he cannot control. “I don’t know. I know what will be written anyway. But Anderlecht was a good learning curve for me, at all levels. I grew up in this world, so it doesn’t really concern me. When you work at Bayern, which is in the top five of the biggest clubs in the world, there’s not a single moment when you are not in the spotlight,” Kompany told DH les Sports + (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The important thing is to keep it simple and focus on what matters and that is to win and always want to do better.”If the Bayern Munich backline can get it together, the noise will almost assuredly die down. If things do not improve, though, Kompany mighty have to remind himself to continue tune out the criticism. In case you missed it, France Football left Jamal Musiala out of their Ballon d’Or top 30, which has sparked anger among the Bayern Munich fanbase and executives alike. FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich is gearing up for Holstein Kiel... Bayern Munich (rightfully) took a conservative approach with star winger Leroy Sané, as the German was fighting his way back from a groin injury that required surgery. According to a report from kicker journalist Frank Linkesch (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Sané could be back in action on Saturday against Holstein Kiel or on Tuesday vs. Dinamo Zagreb: Leroy Sané has been training with the team for two weeks and is expected to make his comeback in the squad against Kiel on Saturday. Germany v Hungary - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Christof Koepsel/Getty Images The kid is not letting this get him down... Rumors that Jamal Musiala will leave Bayern Munich in the near future simply are not abating as the German’s contract ticks down towards its’ last year. Key to those rumors is Musiala’s apparent belief that winning the Ballon D’or, the trophy awarded to the player voted to be the best in the world, is much too difficult in Germany. And after the top 30 list for the Ballon D’or came out and Musiala was not in it, that belief may not be far off the mark. However, when asked about the snub on international break with Germany, @iMiaSanMia, via RTL, captured Musiala’s strong response: “It doesn’t change anything. That doesn’t change my quality and what my goals are for this season. There’s no point in thinking about it. I’m focused on myself, my development and doing everything to win here with the national team and with Bayern.”Of course, it is pertinent to remember that Musiala is simply speaking about the snub for this season, not his appreciation for the award itself. Winning it may still be a big goal for him and influence whether the former Chelsea FC player will sign a new contract at Bayern or seek a different club. But for now, with the season just getting underway, it’s not going to shake him off his course.

FC Bayern München v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Bundesliga/Bundesliga Collection via Getty Images Herbert Hainer has dreams of Kimmich ending his playing career at Bayern as one of the club’s true leaders. Joshua Kimmich is set to enter the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich, and there has not yet been an agreement between the player and the club to extend said contract. The Germany captain has now been with the Rekordmeister since the winter of 2015 and last signed a contract extension back in the summer of 2021. At the time, he and fellow midfielder Leon Goretzka had signed contract extensions right around the same time on the heels of their successful We Kick Corona campaign that was established to help provide relief funds for charitable institutions fighting through financial hardships as a result of the pandemic. Fast forward to now, and there is concrete interest in Kimmich from Barcelona, as Hansi Flick is hopeful of a potential reunion from one of the players that played a key role in helping secure the infamous Sextuple that spanned from 2019 to 2021. At this juncture, Kimmich has to decide; does it want to move abroad and face a new challenge in a new league or commit his long-term future to Bayern. Thankfully, since he represents himself and does not have an agent, there are more direct lines of communication and less complications, but Bayern’s front office and board is very hopeful he will stay with the club.Bayern president Herbert Hainer recently expressed his desire that one day Kimmich would end his playing career in Munich. He dreams of having him play for Bayern until he decides to hang up his playing boots for good. “I would be happy if Joshua ended his career at FC Bayern, but not next year, rather in many, many years from now,” Hainer enthused, as per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg. Tottenham Hotspur v FC Bayern Munich - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Domenic Aquilina/NurPhoto via Getty Images Flick’s presence at Barcelona will certainly be a point of concern for Bayern’s front office, as that is certainly one facet that could turn Kimmich’s head. However, they are also quite certain that, much like his recent nomination by Julian Nagelsmann for the German national team, that he is a future captain of FC Bayern. Club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen had alluded to this earlier this month. “Joshua Kimmich is an outstanding character that gives everything in every game. Sometimes even with too much ambition. Vincent Kompany made it clear early on that he’s relying on him. I think Joshua feels comfortable in Munich. Everything else will emerge from the talks with Max Eberl and Christoph Freund,” Dreesen had explained (via @iMiaSanMia). Holstein Kiel v AS Saint-Etienne - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Jürgen Fromme - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Bundesliga action is back for Bayern Munich! Bayern Munich will be back in action this weekend and will be facing Holstein Kiel. As you might recall, Bayern Munich was unceremoniously bounced by Holstein Kiel in the DFB-Pokal during Hansi Flick’s final season with the club (FCBayern.com): Bayern have a score to settle with Kiel from the only previous competitive encounter. That came in the second round of the 2020/21 DFB Cup when a 6-5 defeat on penalties saw the holders knocked out by the then Bundesliga 2 side in wintery January conditions at the Holstein-Stadion.Even with Holstein Kiel struggling with its promotion, this should be a fun match for fans to soak in after the international break. Let’s take a look at what we have on tap for this episode:A look at where each team is in the table and the recent form of each squad. Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty Images O captain, my captain! Last week, Julian Nagelsmann officially announced that Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich would be the new captain, cementing his legacy as one of Germany’s greatest players of all-time. Kimmich immediately rewarded Naglesmann’s decision with two spectacular performances. In Tuesday’s clash with the Netherlands, Kimmich even scored in stoppage time to give Germany a 2-1 lead headed into halftime. This is his seventh international goal in 93 appearances. In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Kimmich said, “it’s always special to score, especially in the national team. A great feeling.”In regards to the game as a whole, he added, “I thought the first half was good apart from the first couple of minutes. We managed to come back and take the lead. We didn’t get to a good start in the second half. Overall it was a high level game. Despite going behind early in the game, we stayed calm and tried to play our game.”Logic follows that Kimmich will soon be the captain of Bayern as well. Germany Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA EURO 2024 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Can Bayern Munich get these two deals across the finish line? According to a report from Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich is planning to open contract negotiations with both Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané very shortly: Bayern will open contract talks with Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané after the international break. Max Eberl agreed with the management of both players (both represented by the same agency 11Wins) to meet after the break. Eberl has already expressed the club’s interest in extending Musiala and Sané’s contracts during the initial talks. For board member for sport Max Eberl, getting a deal done for Musiala is a high priority. “Jamal is a player like very, very few. After almost every game, his teammates rave about him - for them it’s a pleasure to be on the pitch with him and it is a pleasure to watch him. At 21 years old, he has established himself at the highest international level, and his journey at FC Bayern is far from over. He wants to win titles, and that’s exactly what we want. We are always in contact, further discussions will take place. He should become a face of FC Bayern in the future,” said Eberl. “Regarding Leroy, the first thing now is to make sure he’s back on the pitch in good health soon. That’s our focus at the moment, and we’re looking forward to it, because Leroy can, with his tremendous qualities, make the difference at every moment on the pitch. He’s entering the last year of his contract, so we will have calm discussions about his future in the coming months. We all know that he’s a factor in winning titles.”For Eberl to get Musiala’s deal done, he might have to pry open the coffers and fork over a big payday to the Germany international: Jamal Musiala’s current contract was signed when he was still an up-and-coming youngster. He currently earns up to €9m gross per year. Bayern bosses are aware that in offer to keep Musiala, they would have to make him one of the club’s top earners. Manchester City with Pep Guardiola in particular are interested. Musiala grew up in England and the Premier League is appealing to him. The fact Musiala was not nominated for the Ballon d’Or is an argument in favour of foreign clubs interested, as it’s more difficult for Bundesliga players to be recognized as global stars. Winning the Ballon d’Or is a goal for Musiala. That’s why Max Eberl made the statement about the award last week in order to show appreciation for Musiala in the fight to keep him at the club.Sané is one of Bayern’s top earners. Even if other clubs wouldn’t offer him €20m/year, he would get a signing on fee that would compensate for that as he will be a free agent next summer. Another argument in favour of Sané with Bayern bosses: When he joined the club in 2020, the player forgoed an additional €5m per year, which was already negotiated. At the time, Bayern had asked for that because income had collapsed due to the Corona crisis. Sané complied with the club’s request.Manchester City, Liverpool FC, FC Barcelona, and Real Madrid are all rumored to have interest in Musiala, while Liverpool is also allegedly fans of Sané.Buckle up Bayern Munich fans, it is going to be a heck of a ride. In case you missed it, France Football left Jamal Musiala out of their Ballon d’Or top 30, which has sparked anger among the Bayern Munich fanbase and executives alike. Holland v Germany -UEFA Nations league Photo by Pim Waslander/Soccrates Images/Getty Images Matthijs de Ligt didn’t have to wait long to face off against some old teammates. After wins this weekend to start the UEFA Nations League group stage, Germany and Netherlands faced off Tuesday night to determine the group leader. The Dutch scored quickly but Germany stormed back to take the halftime lead behind goals from Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav. Denzel Dumfries scored the equalizer in the 50th minute and the rest of the match played out to a contentious draw.Recently sold by Bayern, defender Matthijs de Ligt earned the start for the Netherlands. After a couple up-and-down seasons at Bayern, De Ligt transferred to Manchester United to link up with his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag. Unfortunately for De Ligt, he gave up one of the goals and was substituted off at halftime. Before the game, De Ligt snagged the opportunity to catch up with a couple former teammates, Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović.Aleksandar Pavlović on IG pic.twitter.com/qJ89RTzVOU— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 10, 2024Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands? Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images Who would have thought a UEFA Nations League group stage match in September would bring such intensity? Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann just might have some soul-searching to do before the next international period.Germany did not play badly, but Netherlands will be the happier of the two teams after a 2-2 draw in Nations League Group A action at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Dutch were out-posessed but handily deserved their goals. Nagelsmann adjusted, personnel and tactics, and will have to wonder which was more lacking on the day.Now for some quick hitters:Where’s Kai Havertz’s shooting boots? What was the linesman doing on that offside call? Havertz’s breakaway in the second half came to nothing but he was onside by a mile. Hitting the deck: from attack to defense, the Netherlands gave Germany more muscle than it could handle. From forward Maximilian Beier to defender Nico Schlotterbeck, German players got wrestled to the turf.Tah will get more of the attention after his half-time substitution but Schlotterbeck did not look his best, either. Tough day for both German center-backs.The season is still early and club form between now and October will be something to watch. Nagelsmann opted against making big changes to his EURO 2024 squad this time — but opportunity is knocking for players on the bubble. Now for the Bild ratings — and your turn to weigh in below the jump. FC Bayern München v Grashoppers Zürich - Preseason Friendly Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Coman wound up staying in through the summer window, but he could be leaving Bayern come January 2025 Even if Bayern Munich was unable to land all of the transfer targets they wanted to bring in during the summer transfer period, they were still busy in the window with both inbound and outbound players. For the last week or so of the window, there were a handful of moves that were hanging in the balance that did not wind up materializing and one of said moves was the potential departure of Kingsley Coman to Saudi Arabia. As the summer window dwindled down, it became clear that there was concrete interest in Coman from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, who were prepared to offer the Rekordmeister a considerable fee to acquire the winger. Of course, there was also interest from other clubs across Europe, but none would have been able to offer the amount of finances the Saudi outfit would have been able to. The French international had a tough decision to make, and he did have a few extra days to ponder the offer after the European window closed since it remained open for a few more days elsewhere in the world. However, he decided to stay at Bayern for now.Despite the decision to stay in Munich, there is still a possibility that Coman could be leaving Bayern before this season ends. His current contract at Bayern runs through June 2027, but his market value has been on a steady decline ever since the summer of 2023, as per Transfermarkt. For Bayern, the window of time could be running out to get the most amount of money for him in the transfer market.Per SportBild journalist Christian Falk (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern is open to selling Coman in the winter transfer window and they are hoping that offers come in from the Premier League in England. The player himself would prefer to go to a top European club in one of the major five leagues if he does leave Bayern as opposed to the Saudi Pro League and he could be pushed to make a move if he does not get a lot of consistent minutes under Vincent Kompany. From the first three competitive matches from Bayern before the September international break, it is clear that Kompany will not likely be starting Coman often, but the busy schedule could work in Coman’s favor. There will certainly be a necessity for sporadic rotations as the club pushes across three fronts, especially with the new format of the UEFA Champions League. Only time will tell whether or not Coman will still be a player for FC Bayern after the winter transfer window or not. Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Who’s ready for some Bundesliga action? Is Kimmich focused on Barca move? (PSG Talk)Bayern Munich is said to want to keep Joshua Kimmich, but the Germany international might have his eyes on a move to rejoin Hansi Flick at FC Barcelona: During the summer transfer window, Paris Saint-Germain showed interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich. However, the veteran chose to stay with the Bavarian club and see out the final year of his contract. If Kimmich doesn’t sign an extension this season, he’ll have full control over his future and could leave Bayern as a free agent next summer. Mundo Deportivo recently reported that Barcelona is targeting Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen and Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich as part of its 2025 plans to bolster its midfield and defense.Additionally, the Spanish outlet noted that Barcelona hope to bring Kimmich in on a free transfer. Bojan Krkic Sr. notes that the veteran midfielder wants a move to the Catalan side.“Kimmich really wants to come to Barça,” Krkic Sr. said on Cadena Ser (h/t Le10Sport). “The coach plays an important role and Barça has what it does to sign good players with a coach recognized as Flick.”The report from Mundo Deportivo also notes that Bayern Munich want him to stay, but Kimmich is considering a move outside the Bundesliga. As the player enters the later stages of his career, it’s no surprise that he might want to experience a different league and country. It will be interesting to see if the Parisians move for Kimmich and add a veteran voice in the midfield to balance how young the group is.There is a large segment of Bayern Munich fans, who seem ready to let the midfielder / right-back move on, but the 29-year-old still has an important role under Vincent Kompany and is considered to be one of the team’s most important locker room figures. Barca needs to sell De Jong, Araújo to bring in Tah, Kimmich (Barca Universal)FC Barcelona might want to make moves for Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, but if those were to happen, it will need to sell Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araújo per one report: It is no secret that Barcelona have set their sights on Jonathan Tah and Joshua Kimmich as key targets for the upcoming transfer market.Interestingly, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the motivation behind this pursuit stems from the uncertain future of Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, whose contracts are set to expire in the summer of 2026. If Araujo and de Jong do not agree to new terms, Barcelona might look to sell them before their contracts run out, to avoid losing them for free.Tah and Kimmich are both on Barcelona’s radar for the next season. With contracts lasting until 2025, they represent potential new additions with significant experience. The German duo has proven their quality on the field and their potential arrival at Barcelona is particularly intriguing as it could fill the gaps left by Araujo and de Jong, given that they play in similar positions.Barcelona’s uncertainty regarding Araujo and de Jong’s future has heightened their interest in these players. Both Araujo and de Jong currently hold prominent roles at the club, with Araujo serving as the second captain and de Jong as the third. However, the club remains in the dark about their long-term plans. Despite several discussions and renewal offers, there has been no significant progress. For instance, Araujo’s agents met with Barcelona’s representatives in February, but there were no direct updates on the renewal offer reaching him. Even after further personal interventions by Joan Laporta, including direct discussions with Araujo, there has been little movement. If both players do not sign new deals by next summer, Barcelona might be more inclined to sell them to secure some return on their investment rather than risk losing them for nothing. This situation makes Tah and Kimmich particularly attractive…

The 2024/25 edition of the Champions League coincides with the introduction of the new “league phase” format for the very first time. This change expands the number of games teams participating in the competition will play before the round of 16 from six to eight. This shift provides a recent example of an increase in the amount of fixtures teams have to play, but there are plenty more to choose from.Bayern Munich is included as one of the teams set to participate in the new format for the Club World Cup, which will see a host of top teams from nations worldwide compete for intercontinental glory. The tournament is intended to take place every four years, with the 2025 edition occurring from June 15th to July 13th. With the latter round of the Nation League planned to happen around June as well (not to mention the Gold Cup directly overlapping with the Club World Cup), the concern of fixture congestion rears its ugly head once more. Not only does fixture congestion increase the risk of a player picking up an injury, but recent comments from Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva have shed light on how difficult it can be for players to spend time with their friends and family as their sporting demands increase. There is, however, at least one player who’s looking at the issue of fixture congestion differently. Newly minted Germany captain Joshua Kimmich was recently asked if he’d prefer to play in the Nations League or Club World Cup come next summer and was captured (via @iMiaSanMia) giving the response that, “[He] would like to play both.” Kimmich continued, stating, “In general, I’m a fan of playing many games. When it comes to the Nations League, people always say it’s an ‘artificial’ competition. Personally, I would rather play the Nations League and compete for a trophy than play in any kind of friendly games.”Kimmich’s comments show the player’s impressive mentality, but is anyone really surprised here? If Kimmich has an opportunity to win something, anything, he’s going to take it.

FC Bayern München v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich’s plan of attack... According to a report from kicker journalist Frank Linkesh (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich’s plans for using João Palhinha will start to take shape. As the English weeks start to mount, the Portuguese midfielder will see a bigger role in the squad’s central midfield: João Palhinha is expected to play a bigger role with the mid-week games coming up soon. Firstly, Vincent Kompany is planning on rotating his squad more often. Secondly, Bayern will soon start facing strong attacking teams that can exploit the gaps in the middle of the pitch, which is why Palhinha was signed in the first place. The Bayern Munich midfield situation will be one to watch. How much Vincent Kompany plans to rotate will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike. FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BAYERN MUNICH-FREIBURG Photo by LUKAS BARTH-TUTTAS/AFP via Getty Images Does this team have what it takes to get the job done? Bayern Munich experienced a whirlwind of activity in the most recent transfer window that saw the likes of Michael Olise, João Palhinha, and Hiroki Ito join the club with Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Malik Tillman all securing permanent transfers away. In a recent interview with DH les Sports + (captured via @iMiaSanMia), new Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany responded to a question about his level of satisfaction with Bayern’s activity in the transfer window, stating, “I have a phenomenal squad. But compared to the past, the competition – Leverkusen, Leipzig, Dortmund and more – has become stronger too. From a footballing point of view, it’s become more difficult to dominate the league.”While Kompany’s statement surrounding the competition in the league seemingly reflects reality, a more interesting question reveals itself. Why has Bayern’s standing relative to the rest of the league decreased?Bayern has an inflated reputation of “stealing” talent away from its competitors within the Bundesliga, but looking at recent seasons it becomes difficult to make the argument that such is the case. Yes, the club signed the former RB Leipzig trio of Marcel Sabitzer, Dayot Upamecano, and Konrad Laimer in recent seasons in addition to the acquisition of Raphael Guerreiro from Borussia Dortmund. However, these transfers aren’t on the same level as the moves made for Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels, and Mario Götze in the early to mid-2010s. None of Christopher Nkunku, Erling Haaland, or Jude Bellingham has ended up at Bayern. So is it Bayern’s waning ability to poach talent away from its competitors that is making life more difficult for itself, or have the rest of the teams in the league simply employed better strategies to raise their level?

England v France: Quarter-Finals - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Photo by Simon Bruty/Anychance/Getty Images Drop all your Harry Kane center back jokes here... For his entire career at Tottenham, people have contrasted amazement at Harry Kane’s build up play with frowning at his tendency to drop deep. After all, a striker needs to stay up front in order to help his team score goals, right? Now at Bayern Munich and past 30 years of age, that discussion has not stopped. But do we know Kane’s thoughts on the situation? Why does he drop so deep? The topic was brought up in England’s pre-match press conference against Finland, where a reporter addressed Kane’s admiration of Ronaldo and how the legendary Portuguese, against what is apparently common amongst older strikers, does not drop deeper as he ages. The question was, is that an inspiration for Kane? Kane’s response, which @iMiaSanMia captured, quickly shifted towards his role at Bayern: “That depends on circumstance, managers, systems. I’ve always been someone who can play high or drop deep. I’ve got enough of an all-round game to be effective in both areas. For me it’s about being better with Bayern with the new coach, a lot of high-intensity pressing, high pressure situations without the ball which is helping me improve. Football in general is becoming more that style, man-for-man pressure and it’s something you have to be able to cope with.”In the end, Kane didn’t focus on the tendency to drop deep as much as it was on the physical requirements and the high intensity older players might struggle with. We continue to wait to hear his detailed version of how to describe his way of playing football, or at least a description as legendary as Thomas Müller’s “Raumdeuter” one.In case you missed it, France Football left Jamal Musiala out of their Ballon d’Or top 30, which has sparked anger among the Bayern Munich fanbase and executives alike. Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images Little beats the joy of scoring for one’s country... Scoring a goal on one’s debut is always nice. Deniz Undav was the lucky man who was able to experience it was written all over his once he strode over to offer some post match comments on his debut. @iMiaSanMia captured the VFB Stuttgart player’s thoughts on the game:“I’m very happy to score my first goal in my first start, especially against a team like The Netherlands. Even though of course I’d have liked to win the game. I had no pressure and just tried to play my game and score, it worked out today.”After an encouraging EURO 2024 that still ended before the semifinals and a dominant win against Hungary combined with this mixed result, there is one question one everyone’s mind. Does the German national team now belong to the world elite again? Undav says no:“Not yet. But we’re in a good way. The chemistry in the team is amazing. We still have to learn, we made mistakes that shouldn’t be happening at this level. I’m confident we can improve and achieve big things.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands? Germany v Hungary - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images It must be better... After crushing Hungary 5-0 on Saturday, there was nowhere to go, but down, right? That is exactly what happened during Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands, but it was not a precipitous, calamitous fail like many would have you believe. There were some positives throughout the match, but also some uneven play, which led to the result. For German national team boss, it was just not good enough. Still, the coach remained very positive. “It was an entertaining, exciting, open game from both teams. We reacted well after going behind and deserved to take the lead at half time. Unfortunately, we conceded the equalizer early on in the second half, we defended too aggressively on the box [Schlotterbeck against Brobbey], which wasn’t necessary. We’re aware that every game before the World Cup is important, whether in the Nations League or qualifiers. The team believes in itself, the fans see that the players are giving everything,” said Nagelsmann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Despite the result, Nagelsmann has the squad headed in the right direction. Can the German continue to make progress during the next international break?Looking for more thoughts and analysis on germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands? Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty Images A poor showing earned Tah an early trip to the locker room. After a solid shutout performance against Hungary over the weekend, Jonathan Tah earned another start for Germany against the Netherlands but with a much different result. Germany gave up an early goal to Tijjani Reijnders and struggled to contain the Dutch attack for most of the evening. The game eventually settled at a draw but was uneasy for both teams throughout the match.Tah, a potential transfer target for Bayern Munich, has worked his way up the pyramid for Germany and Julian Nagelsmann but has continued to struggle against the elite opponents for both club and country. After a poor first half, Nagelsmann opted to substitute Tah at halftime and bring on Borussia Dortmund’s Waldemar Anton. In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Nagelsmann said, “[Tah] made 4-5 fouls in the first half. I was afraid he would get a second yellow card. We didn’t want to take any risks.”While each item is technically true, the fact remains that the starting center-back spot opposite Antonio Rüdiger at the 2026 World Cup is up for grabs between Tah, Anton, and Nico Schlotterbeck.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands? Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images Germany earned a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. Die Folgen: Germany’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands (Bavarian Football Works)Germany was riding high after its big win over Hungary last week, but the competition was much more tough this time around. In a match played at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, the Germans had some moments — just not enough to put away the Dutch. Costly mistakes for both teams played a role in what will surely be a game that both think about ahead of the next international break. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always let’s take a look at Julian Nagelsmann’s starting XI: Your Germany starting XI! #DFB #GermanFootball #GermanMNT #NEDGER
DFB/Thomas Böcker pic.twitter.com/OydzBPFzcZ— German Football (@DFB_Team_EN) September 10, 2024When word dropped that Niclas Füllkrug was going to miss the game, the speculation immediately went to who would fill his shoes. Would it be Borussia Dortmund’s Maximilian Beier or would it be one of the VfB Stuttgart duo — Chris Fuhrich and Deniz Undav. Nagelsmann went with Undav and it paid off. Otherwise, the choices went as expected. Undav scored the go-ahead goal in the first half and was a threat for Germany. Underutilized so far under Nagelsmann, Undav is a versatile, crafty player who can make a positive impact off the bench — or as part of the XI. Undav also had an assist. After falling behind on a goal from Tijjani Reijnders, Germany looked unorganized defensively. The center-back duo of Nico Schlotterbeck and Jonathan Tah struggled to get on the same page. Tah was downright reckless and needed to be pulled at halftime before he pick up a red card. The defense — particularly at center-back — is an area of concern. Outside-backs Joshua Kimmich and David Raum were good at least. Despite the early hole, Germany did show resilience and claw back with goals from Kimmich and Undav. The Netherlands did knot the match with a goal from Denzel Dumfries in the 50th minute. Everyone loves Jamal Musiala, but this was a game where he forced things too much. The youngster admitted that he wants to improve his decision-making in the final third, which is a must for him to get to the level of where he wants to be. While he only lost possession 13 times (not bad considering his role and minutes played), he did have six shots blocked. This will be a good film for Musiala to review and learn from. Florian Wirtz turned in another well-rounded, solid effort. The Bayer Leverkusen man did really well for himself over these two games. The midfield of Robert Andrich and Pascal Groß had some up-and-down moments. It will be interesting to see if Nagelsmann opts to give Aleksandar Pavlović a chance to start with Groß during the next international break. Overall, this was a very good set of matches for Germany — even with the draw result. Nagelsmann is learning a lot about this team and clearly developing new ways to utilize the talent. Sure, the draw felt like a lost opportunity, but this is a marathon to the 2026 World Cup, not a sprint. There will be a lot of ups-and-downs and also a lot of learning along the way.
