To say the least, Lothar Matthäus is not happy with the state of Bayern Munich center-back position. We covered the first part of the former Bayern Munich and German national team great’s comments here but he had much more to say — including some real doubt about whether or not Kim Min-jae can succeed at Bayern Munich long-term. This is what he wrote for Sky (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): If (Matthijs) De Ligt had not been sold, I would not have worries at FC Bayern now. But my opinion about him is probably different to the people in charge. It’s a decision that has to be accepted. But many - including within the team - are just shaking their heads. Because the players also know that their defense is shaky. And then the best defender for many is sold. It’s not possible for Kim to play like he did in Napoli. They played very differently in defense than Bayern does. I don’t want to offend Kim, but he simply did not combine the clear, quick passing game with a certain security that is needed at the back. I didn’t like that about him from the start. The ball bounces around with him. That’s not what I expect at the highest level, that is not FC Bayern. He also does not have the tackling ability that he used to have in Napoli at the moment.Despite the defensive problems, I would not sign Jonathan Tah or any other new center-back (at midseason). With Kim, Upamecano, Eric Dier, Hiroki Itō and Josip Stanišić, FC Bayern has five players who can play this position.There will be a lot of eyes on the backline line in the coming weeks. My family were there too and cheered me on in the stadium. In what was a rather shocking move even for the opinionated and headstrong Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands manager recently stated via a press conference that “the book is basically closed” for winger Steven Bergwijn’s Netherlands career. The reason for this exclusion is the player’s recent move from Ajax Amsterdam to the Saudi Pro League, or rather the motivation behind it, as Koeman accused the former Tottenham player for choosing financial ambition over sporting ambition.Ahead of Germany’s match against Netherlands in the Nations League, reporters took the chance to ask Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann ahead of the game what he thought about Koeman’s decision. @iMiaSanMia captured Nagelsmann’s response: “Generally speaking, I can understand when a coach wants to prioritize the sporting side because the league in Saudi Arabia is not at the same level as here in Europe. But I wouldn’t rule it out completely. If you judge it purely from a sporting perspective, you have to give every league in the world a chance. But at the moment it’s not a top league. I wouldn’t completely rule out [calling up a player from the Saudi league], but I can also understand my colleague.”That is about as middle ground of a position as Nagelsmann could have managed and it was likely the wise move. This is not his affair and making some kind of controversial statement on the topic would have opened up a can of worms the former TSG Hoffenheim boss simply does not need. But it does make one wonder. None of Germany’s current key players are currently plying their trade in Saudi Arabia or another league Nagelsmann might identify as not good enough. Bayern Munich’s Josip Stanišić is not a stranger to massive, unfortunate injuries. Back in his breakout 2021/22 seasons for Bayern, the youngster’s incredibly bright start cut was short via a muscle bundle injury as he was forced to miss around 2 months due to injury. Even after he returned, his momentum was now gone, his importance to the squad had diminished and he would see little more game time before the end of the season. That serious injury set the young Croat back quite a bit.Unfortunately, the injury Stanišić is currently battling with now is far worse. Kicker reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that it will take at least 3 months to heal:Following his knee surgery, Josip Stanišić’s rehab is going according to plan. However, Stanišić is still wearing a splint in everyday life and needs crutches. Normally, a torn collateral ligament needs a break of up to four months. If everything goes without complications, it could be “only” three. In Stanišić’s case, that would be the end of November.Bayern’s initial report on the injury suggested that Stanišić would be out for just “several weeks”. If Kicker is right-and these days that is a big if- then Bayern will have miscalculated the injury. Furthermore, if the seemingly best case scenario of a three month break comes to be, the former Bayer Leverkusen player will still miss 13 matches for the Bavarian giants, including the majority of the Bundesliga Hinrunde, the Champions League League phase and the crucial second round of the DFB Pokal. Another long, long period without Stanišić seems ahead. With Bayern Munich desperately attempting to ink Jamal Musiala to a contract extension, the club has become uber-sensitive to any public criticism or perceived slight to the youngster. Last week, board member for sport Max Eberl fired off salvos at France Football over Musiala not being included in the list of Ballon d’Or finalists. Now, though, the Bavarians are directing their ire at noted pundit Didi Hamann, who has been critical of Musiala’s recent performances. Hamann implied that Musiala is selfish and inferred that his game is not evolving, as described in this report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Maybe tossing some salt in the wounds, Hamann also said he would take Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz over Musiala right now: Didi Hamann criticised Jamal Musiala in his Sky column yesterday, describing him a ‘individualistic’, ‘solo performer’ and doesn’t make players around him better. ‘If he gets the ball ten times, he puts his head down nine times and starts dribbling’ - in contrast to Florian Wirtz, who puts his teammates in the spotlight and makes them better. Hamann added: “If I could swap Wirtz and Musiala from Bayern’s point of view, I would do it tomorrow.”Needless to say, Bayern Munich circled the wagons and is furious with Hamann. The club clearly wants to show Musiala any support that it can during what could be contentious negotiations: According to @BILD, these statements have left Bayern furious internally. They are irritated and surprised that Hamann is now not only attacking coaches and bosses, as he often has in the past, but also the fan favourite Musiala. There’s currently no direct response to Hamann, but the club’s bosses will respond to questions on the topic in the coming days - probably as early as tomorrow’s press conference with Max Eberl. Bayern does not want to give Hamann the stage with a direct critical response, the bosses will rather stand behind Musiala and talk up their player.Musiala is currently the most important topic at Bayern. With the upcoming contract negotiations, the club is making extreme efforts to ensure that Musiala feels comfortable and appreciated in Munich and that everyone at Bayern is behind him.Bayern Munich has been consistent with defending its players over the years, but this case must feel very personal for the club. Losing Musiala would be a catastrophe in many ways and the Bavarians will do anything to shield him from any attacks. Bayern Munich desperately wants to keep Jamal Musiala and the club is now in talks with representatives for the player. In his work for CaughtOffside (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says that Bayern Munich will go all out to keep Musiala and is confident that it can retain the youngster: Bayern are ‘confident’ about keeping Jamal Musiala at the club. His contract is a really important topic for the board, they simply can’t fail on this mission. Negotiations are ongoing, but it’s too early to say how it will finish. There’s no decision yet. Romano (via @iMiaSanMia) checked back in with more information as well. Real Madrid and Manchester City are among the clubs that “love” Musiala: Bayern have already presented a new contract proposal to Jamal Musiala. There’s already a conversation and a kind of negotiation going on. But it’s not something that’s going to be resolved overnight. Bayern are ready to offer ‘really important’ money to Musiala in terms of fixed salary, add-ons and special bonuses to keep him at the club. Bayern are pushing and their goal is to resolve the situation before summer 2025 to avoid arriving at a point where the player would only have one year left on his contract. All top clubs, including Real Madrid and Man City, love Musiala - and will be there in case Bayern can’t agree a new deal with him. Media Champions League 2023/24 Supercomputer: Knockout Round Score Predictions Per the Supercomputer, Bayern Munich will be eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarterfinals: Media How does the Supercomputer work?This is how the Supercomputer came to its conclusion: Grosvenor Sport’s Supercomputer is a probability model, not determined by human predictions or bias. The Supercomputer estimates the outcome of each fixture based on a team’s current strength (based on factors such as league position and form) and betting market odds.The predictions are the result of a model simulating every game in the competition and predicting the exact score it thinks every game will be. Bayern Munich has been interested in Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz for years, but what is the relationship like between the parties?Well, if you are a fan of Leverkusen, this might not be a fun read from Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): Florian Wirtz thinks very highly of FC Bayern as a club. Together with his father/agent Hans, he had visited the Bayern campus as a youth player in 2019. In the end, he decided to move from Köln to Leverkusen because of the geographical proximity and the direct promotion to the first team. But Bayern never lost touch with Wirtz. Uli Hoeneß invited Wirtz’s parents to visit him at his home in Tegernsee even after the move to Leverkusen. Mother Karin and father Hans accepted this invitation and had a meeting with Hoeneß. The latter didn’t want to answer about the topic when asked by Sport Bild. As the Bavarians seek to re-up Jamal Musiala and with Paul Wanner looking like a future star, does Bayern Munich really need Wirtz? Need and want are two different things, but it appears as if the Bavarians believe adding Wirtz to the mix could make the Bayern Munich attack one for the ages in the coming years.
