Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images That was fun, wasn’t it? Bayern Munich’s 6-1 Bundesliga victory over Holstein Kiel on Saturday means the (good) problem will be to decide which of the excellent players deserve an extra tip of the hat. Here’s our awardees.Jersey Swap: Magnus KnudsenOn the evidence of this performance, it will be very difficult-but not impossible for Holstein Kiel to remain in the Bundesliga. Part of a newly promoted side’s efforts to stay in the league comes down to how well their new signings perform and integrate themselves into their side. Based on this performance, 23-year-old Magnus Knudsen’s integration is going well. He was Kiel’s one solid performer in midfield despite his tender age and status as a new transfer, winning most of his duels and completing most of his passes as his partners Nicolai Remberg and Lewis Holtby suffered abysmal games. Shout-out to Armin Gigović, too, who came on for Holtby and scored the team’s lone goal with a phenomenal late run and header.Der Kaiser: Dayot UpamecanoLet’s start with an easy award. Dayot Upamecano, fresh off of an international break in which he underlined his status as France’s No.1 CB, picked up where he left off with a dominant display. The Frenchman won the vast majority of his duels, picked passes past the opposition press all day and even nearly scored at the end. What a performance.Der Fußballgott: Jamal MusialaThis might be slightly cheating, but Jamal Musiala is technically an attacking midfielder. Despite only playing 45 minutes today, it was Musiala’s well taken goal after just 14 seconds that helped Bayern on their way to a comfortable victory, then Musiala’s phenomenal dribbling that was responsible for the own goal that completed a stunning opening 10 minutes for the Bavarian giants. It was not just his goal contributions that set him apart, however, as he popped up all over the pitch, gliding past opponents and causing havoc amongst the opposition backline. How so very fitting for Musiala to drop such a performance after a certain mouthy pundit criticized him so heavily this past week. After such a great performance, he was allowed to take an extended break, safe in the knowledge that he had indeed made his team better...unlike what some people think.Der Bomber: Kingsley ComanHere we arrive at the most difficult award to give out. Does Serge Ganbry get an award for a performance filled with incredible explosiveness and many dangerous opportunities along with the crucial interception for the second goal? Does Michael Olise get it for his first goal in a Bayern shirt? In the end, Kingsley Coman takes the prize. It was interesting to see him get a start, two weeks after the German transfer window and the Bavarian giants’ efforts offload the Frenchman ended. But he made the most of his opportunity, displaying sublime skill on multiple occasions to beat two, three, even four opponents in limited space and proving impossible to handle all night long. His propensity for making sudden runs into space and his unpredictability make him a good fit in Kompany’s system and were crucial to the making of his assist for the fourth goal, which Harry Kane stroked home from distance. Speaking of the Englishman...Man of the Match: Harry KaneCould it really have been anyone else? Harry Edward Kane MBE continues to prove his doubters wrong with yet another brilliant goal scoring performance. Despite being criticized for a poor EURO 2024 performance, Kane has yet again reminded us why he is so indubitably brilliant with a phenomenal three goals, taking advantage of multiple half-chances in the first half to score two — while somehow contriving to miss the easy chances — before completing his hat-trick with a penalty he won himself in the second half. This takes his seasonal tally to five goals in four matches. Not bad for a past-it has been, right?

FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Well...what’s dead may never die? Real Madrid’s courtship of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies is in the “final stretch” according to a report from AS: Madrid have become accustomed to bringing their homework done at home. They did it by tying down Mbappé throughout last season once the star told PSG that he was not going to renew his contract and also now with Alphonso Davies. The roadmap with the Canadian has gone step by step to where the white club had planned: the left-back has resisted all of Bayern’s attacks and psychological games and has entered the last year of his contract. From January 1, he will be legally able to sign freely for Madrid, thus putting into effect a pre-agreement between the parties that has been brewing for months.Per AS, Real Madrid’s game plan to acquire Davies has gone exactly to plan over the summer: Madrid’s intention during the summer has been , once it became clear that Bayern would not sell for a modest amount (25 million euros, the maximum that the white club would have reached), to regroup in the conviction that it is better to wait until 2025. The current philosophy of the club is not to enter into negotiations with the clubs and to do so directly with the players that interest it, under the premise that they can come to Chamartín for free and only have to negotiate with them a signing bonus. For Davies it was preferred not to pay a single euro now, given that the club and Ancelotti consider that with Mendy (whose renewal is on track) and Fran García it is enough for this season, plus the potential help of Alaba and Camavinga when they return from their injuries. The AS report went even deeper to say that Bayern Munich has “lost its aura of negotiating strength” and also that “everything seems increasingly clear: Davies is aiming for the left lane of the Bernabéu to continue the dynasty of Roberto Carlos, Marcelo, and company.”If true, Bayern Munich fans might want to start bracing for the worst come January. 1. FC Düren - FC Bayern München - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Ralf Ibing - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Society has moved past the need for international breaks. With the international break now over, Bayern Munich can get on with one of the busiest parts of any season — the September-October gauntlet. With league games ramping up and Champions League games coming into play, this is where a coach needs to prove their credentials. Vincent Kompany has won all his games thus far. It’s a good start but there’s always the risk that the international break threw off the squad’s rhythm, and a team like Holstein Kiel (who were spared the need to send players for international duty) could pull off an upset at their home stadium. Kompany will need to prevent that at all costs, while also keeping his best players — Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and the like — fresh for the upcoming UCL opener vs Dinamo Zagreb. This is the delicate balancing act any coach much master if they want to be successful in Munich. It’s Bayern time. While you’re waiting for the game, why not check out our preview podcast! FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Leroy Sané is finally recovered from his long-lasting pubic bone injury and he is raring to go. It has been a long time coming, but Leroy Sané is set to make his return to action for Bayern Munich. The winger has yet to feature for the Rekordmeister this season after he had an operation to repair a lingering groin problem after his involvement with the German national team at the Euros over the summer. He had been dealing with said injury for the majority of the second half of last season for Bayern up through the Euros with Germany and he has been working on his recovery and return to full fitness ever since. For new manager Vincent Kompany, welcoming Sané back will almost be like having a new signing in attack, especially now that he is healthy and not carrying an injury as he was for the business end of last season. It might take some time for the winger to be inserted into any of Kompany’s starting lineup, but with a busy fixture list coming in the next month or so, there will certainly be occasions where rotations are needed. Looking ahead, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund expressed his delight and excitement at having a fit Sané back in the squad ahead of the Bundesliga clash at Holstein Kiel. “He played a really good first half of the season and had a lot of goal involvements. In the spring he was always struggling with injuries and pain. But he fought through it. He’s a real fighter. The nice thing now is that he is pain-free. We are happy that he is back and is really fit,” Freund enthused in the pre-Holstein Kiel press conference (via @iMiaSanMia)There is certainly justification for Freund’s excitement and enthusiasm, too. The majority of Sané’s 10 goals and 13 assists last season across all competitions came in the beginning half of the season. During the second part of the season, when he was starting to suffer from his persistent injury problem, the production in the goals and assists department started to dip.Hopefully for Kompany and the player himself, Bayern and Germany will be able to see pre-injury Sané this season. FC Bayern Munich - VfL Wolfsburg Photo by Robert Michael/picture alliance via Getty Images After a shaky start, the Bavarian steamroller got rolling and never stopped. Bayern Munich notched a 6-2 Frauen-Bundesliga win on Friday over RB Leipzig in a match that, despite an early scare, was ultimately not close at all.Leipzig struck with an early goal when attacking midfielder Vanessa Fudalla’s speculative effort from range swerved and arced inches over goalkeeper Mala Grohs’ outstretched arms. But Bayern pressure mounted, with near-misses at first before the Bavarians finally answered late in a rain-drenched half — Linda Dallman, cutting in from the right and firing a curler with her left, in what would prove to be just the first of a quickfire double. Deep into stoppage time, Georgia Stanway gave Bayern the lead it would not relinquish by pouncing in the midst of a post-corner scramble right in front of Leipzig keeper Elvira Herzog. The second half showed that the visitors simply could not keep Bayern at bay. It was the Klara Bühl show to start, the Bayern winger getting onto the end of two flowing attacking moves, with Leipzig’s defense constantly cut to pieces. By the 70th minute, the score was 4-1, and then it was Bühl’s turn to turn provider by supplying a slick assist in the box for Lea Schüller.Leipzig finally got one back after an untimely foul in the final quarter hour resulted in a penalty — tucked away successfully by earlier goal-scorer Fudalla — and a red card for Bayern defender Linda Sembrant. But Bayern would get the last say again in the closing minutes, Sydney Lohmann driving through the middle of the pitch and sliding Schüller into acres of green. The Bayern striker went the rest of the way solo, adding another brace for the home side and finishing the scoring at 6-2. AC Monza v Frosinone Calcio - Serie A TIM Photo by Image Photo Agency/Getty Images Bayern is set to get some money from Marvin Cuni’s transfer to Rubin Kazan. Earlier this week, Rubin Kazan had announced that they had officially completed the signing of former Bayern Munich youth team player Marvin Cuni. He joins the Russian-based club from Serie B’s Frosinone after spending just over a year with the Italian club. The transfer was worth around €2 million, and Bayern is set to see some financial reward from this move.Last summer, Bayern had agreed for Cuni to join Frosinone for a fee of around €1 million. At the time, they had secured a 50% share of the resale value for the player in the hopes that they would be able to see some return on investment at some point down the road. With the player’s transfer to Rubin Kazan, that is exactly what is set to occur. From the transfer, Bayern is set to receive roughly €1 million, which is about half of the fee Kazan paid to Frosinone to secure the signing of the 23-year-old (via @iMiaSanMia_GER).Rubin Kazan is just the latest stop in what has already been a career full of different tenures for the young center forward, having had spells with Frosinone, Bayern Munich II, FC Saarbrücken, SC Paderborn, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach, and SC Eintracht Freising Jugend along the way. Having spent the majority of his youth and developmental playing days in Germany, Kazan is the second installment in terms of clubs abroad where the young striker can hopefully establish himself and later return to a top flight in one of Europe’s top five leagues. Of course, Frosinone was in Serie A when he joined them, but they have since been relegated to the second tier of Italian football.Cuni will also be hopeful of earning another call-up to the Albanian national team, as he has only made one appearance for them to date. Said appearance came last fall in an international friendly win against Bulgaria. He will certainly have dreams of being able to be a part of, at some capacity, Albania’s qualifying process for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S, Canada, and Mexico. Hannover 96 v Holstein Kiel - Second Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images The #ArpTrain is looking to get back on the tracks... At one point, Fiete Arp seemed destined to be a part of Bayern Munich’s next generation. An unfortunate series of events happened during that journey, though, and Arp ultimately left the club without any acclaim (we’ll always have the preseason matches against Real Madrid — sorry, Marcelo — and Tottenham Hotspur, right?).Now, Arp is working to make a name for himself at Holstein Kiel, where he appears to be very happy. “The state capital Kiel has waited for decades to be so relevant in football. Even before we had made promotion clear, people in the city were saying: Next year Bayern will come to Kiel! In the end, it was always about Bayern,” Arp told FCBayern.com. “Of course, a lot of it is connected to the cup sensation. That’s why it was the biggest dream of the people here to welcome FC Bayern back to Kiel.” Of course, Arp is referencing Holstein Kiel’s shocking DFB-Pokal win over Bayern Munich back in 2021. That match is history, though, and Arp wants to focus on finding a way to help his team this weekend. “The start to the season was unfortunate. But we can still deal with that and we are learning from it,” said Arp, “Everyone will certainly have a certain extra motivation against Bayern. We already noticed what our stadium is capable of in the race for promotion in the 2nd division.“Of course, the game is very important to me. I learned a lot about myself and about football during my time at Bayern. I’m just looking forward to Saturday and the Bundesliga season.” In the end, Arp will also look forward to catching up with his ex-mates. “Personal relationships are always the best, I got to know some impressive people at Bayern,” Arp remarked, who named Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Alphonso Davies, and Jamal Musiala as players he looks forward to catching up with. Germany v Scotland: Group A - UEFA EURO 2024 The Ballon D’or never gets awarded without making some very...controversial decisions The decision to leave Jamal Musiala off the list of the Top 30 contenders for the Ballon d’Or, the award for the best individual player in the world, was met with plenty of shock and confusion around the world, but all the more so in Germany. Germany’s players were not immune to the shock either and new Germany captain Joshua Kimmich weighed in on the topic. Asked whether he could understand the decision to snub Musiala, @iMiaSanMia captured Kimmich’s straight-foward response: “No. I don’t know what criteria are used to decide. The best players should actually be on this list. And Jamal is definitely one of them. He showed that again today.”It helps that Kimmich was speaking about his Bayern Munich teammate after Germany’s dominant 5-0 victory over Hungary in which Musiala contributed an unbelievable hat trick of assists along with a goal of his own. But hey, he’s obviously still not good enough. Switzerland v Germany: Group A - UEFA EURO 2024 Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, and İlkay Gündoğan will get their big send-off at the Allianz. It is the end of an era in German football. When Julian Nagelsmann and Die Mannschaft take the field at the FIFA 2026 Men’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, no less than four icons, all part of the EURO 2024 squad played on home soil in Germany, will be retired from the international game. That quartet — Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos, and İlkay Gündoğan — will get their honors next month in a Nations League tilt vs. the Netherlands:Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gündoğan will be honoured by the DFB, likely before next month's game against The Netherlands (14 October) at Allianz Arena [@dpa] pic.twitter.com/0x2ryxZymY— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 8, 2024That the match will take place at the Allianz Arena will have special significance for the two Bayern Munich men, Neuer and Müller, who are still carrying on strong for their clubs.Kroos retired from Real Madrid after last season, making the EUROs his send-off campaign. Gündoğan, who has returned to Manchester City after one year at FC Barcelona, was a key clog in that EUROs midfield alongside Kroos — and now replacing them both will be the big task for Nagelsmann ahead of the next tournament.Neuer, Müller, and Kroos have history dating back to the third-place 2010 World Cup squad, when Müller in particular ran riot — five goals, three assists in six appearances, collecting the Golden Boot and Best Young Player awards along the way. Gündoğan made the EUROs in 2012 but missed out in 2014 with injury. That was the year Germany won the World Cup, forever cementing this generation’s place in world football. Now it is on to the new era, one which will be shaped by Nagelsmann, the former Bayern coach, and an exciting new generation of talent — led by Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz and Bayern star Jamal Musiala, among others. The youngsters showed enormous promise at EURO 2024, but the first Nations League match vs. the Netherlands this month resulted in a draw. With the legends in the stands, can Germany take its next strides forward in October?

Burnley v Fleetwood Town: Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round Photo by Charlotte Tattersall/Getty Images The Bayern man is a fiery guy. Vincent Kompany is used to having the cameras around — not only as a player, in his long career at Manchester City and elsewhere — but also as coach. Prior to his arrival at Bayern Munich, a viral locker room video was reportedly already circulating among the Bayern squad, a product of a documentary from his days at Anderlecht. Now it’s a different viral video, from last season, when Kompany was at Burnley — and a documentary crew again was on hand to capture a tirade at Icelandic midfielder Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson.Guðmundsson announced his Burnley departure before Kompany’s hire to Bayern was concluded. The Bayern head coach was asked about it this week in an interview with Belgium outlet DH les Sports + — as captured by @iMiaSanMia:A video of you screaming and swearing at Gudmundsson in Burnley has gone viral recently..First, here’s the clip...Kompany goes on a tear, chastising the player for “moaning” and declaring his body language to be comparable to excrement. At one point Kompany starts to walk away before wheeling around and screaming, “It’s [expletive]-ing life or death! [Expletive]-ing play!” — to which Gudmundsson responds, “I [expletive]-ing know that!”Now that the dust has settled, though, Kompany was able to laugh about the incident and detail the story behind it.“I’ve also explained to him calmly,” the 38-year-old says in the interview. “This is actually the first time this year at Bayern that I don’t have a camera crew filming my entire season for a documentary. It was the case at Anderlecht and Burnley. When every speech and every training session is filmed, there’s always a moment like that. “But the message of all that is that we are giving our lives for our club. If the club gets relegated, people will lose their jobs. we have a responsibility. We should never find ourselves in a situation where we have a lack of attention. It wasn’t about a bad pass or a bad tactical choice, but about fundamental things: running and fighting for each other. He had broken the basic principles.”Serving notice to Bayern, then? Expect intensity and a demand for absolute commitment. Kompany may be fresh-faced in the coaching ranks, but he is not messing around.Looking for more thoughts on the contract negotiations between Bayern Munich and Jamal Musiala, plus a take on Didi Hamann’s recent criticism of Musiala? FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich vs Holstein Kiel....are you ready? Barca, Madrid could go to war over Musiala (Madrid Universal)As Bayern Munich works to get a new deal done with Jamal Musiala, the potential competition for him — should he actually hit the transfer market next summer — could be intense. Not only are English powers like Manchester City, Arsenal FC, and Liverpool FC already dreaming about what a Musiala transfer might look like, but both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are reportedly pondering a future with the Germany international. As with everything that involves those two clubs, a battle could ensue: Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala is set to become the centre of attention in the transfer market, sparking interest from both Real Madrid and Barcelona. As revealed by SPORT, Musiala is expected to ignite a bidding war between these two European giants. At 21 years old, the German midfielder is already considered one of the brightest talents in Europe, having showcased his skills over the past few seasons. Bayern Munich are keen to retain him, seeing him as a crucial part of their future, but his contract, which ends in 2026, leaves room for other clubs to make offers.Real Madrid are also closely monitoring Musiala’s situation. It is said that the club sees him as a potential fit for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. However, Madrid’s primary target for next summer remains Manchester City’s Rodri. If Musiala decides to leave Bayern, Madrid could move swiftly to secure his services, either in 2026 as a free agent or sooner if Bayern opt to sell him before his contract expires.Barcelona, on the other hand, are particularly interested in Musiala, with club president Joan Laporta eyeing him as a star signing for the summer of 2025. The club’s strategy is to make a bold statement before the next presidential elections by securing two high-profile signings, and Musiala fits that bill perfectly. His price tag, however, won’t come cheap, with Bayern expected to demand around €130 million. Lastly, Bayern Munich are determined to keep Musiala. Club president Herbert Hainer has publicly stated that they want him to be their next Thomas Muller, someone who could stay at the club for decades. Bayern have already offered Musiala a new contract, but as of now, there has been no response from the player. This situation keeps top clubs like Barça and Madrid on high alert, ready to pounce if the opportunity arises.City could see mass exodus if Pep bails (El Nacional via90Min.com)Manchester City could lose some key players if Pep Guardiola walks away: Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland and Rodri could all leave Manchester City if Pep Guardiola walks away from the job at the end of the season. I mean...if Haaland wants to take a look over at Bayern Munich, the Bavarians might be able to make room for him. Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano was heavily criticized for his start to the Bundesliga season and was duly dropped from the France starting lineup for their game against Italy. However, the new look defense of Arsenal FC’s William Saliba and Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté struggled against Italy, conceding 3. Ergo, Upamecano was restored to the lineup for the game against Belgium, in which he helped keep a clean sheet and underlined his status as France’s No. 1 CB.This will no doubt help the Frenchman’s self-confidence ahead of his games for Bayern, starting with Holstein Kiel this weekend, as the Bavarian giants look to collect their fourth win from four games under new head coach Vincent Kompany. Upamecano was asked about the new coach in a pre match press conference during international duty, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, though his answer was short and sweet: “I’m very happy he’s at Bayern, he’s a good coach who plays attractive football. He gives me a lot of advice because he used to play in my position.”One of the first advice Kompany would likely have given him is that confidence is key. And now, with momentum on his side, perhaps Upamecano will be able to turn that confidence into some very impressive performances in a Bayern shirt.Looking for more thoughts on the contract negotiations between Bayern Munich and Jamal Musiala, plus a take on Didi Hamann’s recent criticism of Musiala? FC St. Pauli - 1. FC Heidenheim Photo by Gregor Fischer/picture alliance via Getty Images The options are still left on the table Paul Wanner, Bayern Munich’s loanee at Heidenheim, is making waves with his performances and has caught the attention of two international teams. Germany and Austria, both of which Wanner could commit to, are fighting for the 19-year-old midfielder’s allegiance. That said, the player is focused on playing time first; the choice of turning out for either country will eventually come.“Of course, I won’t take a break [from international football] forever,” Wanner said (Suddeutsche Zeitung via @iMiaSanMia). “It’s not my goal not to be an international player. I want to get started at some point. Actually, I want to play in the Bundesliga for a whole year to see where it goes, but maybe the decision will be made sooner. I don’t have a final feeling for the right time yet. I can say quite clearly that my decision is still open. I haven’t decided anything yet.”Wanner was quoted as saying that, “Choosing a national team is not like a club. You can’t switch there and then back again, and a loan move isn’t an option either”. He also rejected the chance to play for Germany U21s during the latest international break, simply because he was managing his fitness. “There was a simple reason for that. My body just needed a short break. The transition to the Bundesliga, two training camps, Conference League playoffs, five games in 16 days, that was exhausting. So I communicated that clearly to everyone.”Looking for more thoughts on the contract negotiations between Bayern Munich and Jamal Musiala, plus a take on Didi Hamann’s recent criticism of Musiala?
