FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Will a contract extension happen between Jamal Musiala and Bayern Munich? Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala was on fire during the first half of the team’s 6-1 blowout victory over Holstein Kiel. Musiala opened the scoring just 14 seconds into the match and was generally a problem for the home side during his 45 minutes on the pitch. Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl did not need to even see that kind of showing to know what he wants for Musiala — but it did not hurt. “We’ve been in talks for months. We’ll sit down and discuss it calmly. Jamal knows what he has at Bayern, and we know what we have in Jamal. He should become one of the faces of FC Bayern — like Joshua Kimmich, Aleks Pavlović, and Josip Stanišić,” Eberl told Sky Sport (as posted by Florian Plettenberg). The coming weeks and months will play a key role for how things progress between Musiala and the club. If there is no agreement, it can be assumed that Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Arsenal FC, Manchester City, and Liverpool FC will all be interested in the Germany international. Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Bayern Munich picked up an easy victory... Die Folgen: Bayern’s 6-1 win over Holstein Kiel (Bavarian Football Works)It did not take Bayern Munich long to exert its dominance over Holstein Kiel. How long you ask? Well, roughly 14 seconds as Jamal Musiala put the visitors on the scoreboard extremely early and that paved the way for a thoroughly dominant performance from the Bavarians during a 6-1 victory. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s start with a look at Vincent Kompany’s lineup: STARTING XI

Here's how we line up to take on Holstein Kiel away today ⚫️#KSVFCB pic.twitter.com/ydJbQVfBMP— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) September 14, 2024Hmmm. There were several interesting selections. Joao Palhinha got the nod over Aleksander Pavlović and Raphaël Guerreiro started over Alphonso Davies. Those moves were not wholly unexpected. Kingsley Coman over Leroy Sané, Michael Olise, and Mathys Tel was a bit of a shocker, though. One thing that should get attention is that Thomas Müller — despite several stellar performances— was once again on the bench. So…about the “performance principle”…yikes. At this point, fans have to come to grips with it — Müller is not in the mix for a starting spot and will not be.Just 14 seconds into the match, Jamal Musiala danced his way to the net for a quick 1-0 lead. That was not what Holstein Kiel needed to start the match. Harry Kane’s header sprung Musiala forward to put Bayern Munich up 1-0.Kane got a goal of his own in the 7th minute after a horrible mistake by the Holstein Kiel backline. Serge Gnabry stabbed his foot out to deflect the ball to Kane, who was left with an easy finish.Holstein Kiel was completely overwhelmed by the moment and what was in front of them.Musiala had some dazzling footwork in the 13th minute which preceded an attempted pass to Gnabry, which deflected off of a Holstein Kiel defender into the net for an own goal.Yeah, this was an absolute debacle. The rampant goal scoring did slow down, but Holstein Kiel could not assert any control over the match. The talent difference was just far too great. Kane added his second tally in the 43rd minute after a nice fee from Coman. Michael Olise came in and scored a goal in the 65th minute after he corralled in a long rebound from an Alphonso Davies’ attempt that was saved. Holstein Kiel did eventually get on the scoreboard in the 82nd minute when a cross from Tymoteusz Puchacz found Armin Gigović to beat Manuel Neuer. In the 86th minute, we almost experienced a true #ArpTrain revival as Fiete Arp took a deft touch and rifled a shot that hit the crossbar. That would have take my BFW existence full circle. A late (and somewhat soft) penalty put Kane at the spot, where he succeeded in getting his hat trick and also make it 6-1. Overall, this went as expected. Bayern Munich was completely overwhelming. Musiala, after a week of being under the microscope, came out and played with both an edge and a flair to his game that reminded everyone why he can be so special. If you missed our Initial Analysis, Match Awards, Observations, or Postgame Podcast, give them a look and/or a listen: LFC could balk at selling price if Musiala leaves Bayern (Empire of the Kop)Liverpool FC like Jamal Musiala, but maybe not enough to completely upset its financial status: Liverpool have been quoted an exorbitant transfer price for one ‘world-class’ player in whom they’re reportedly interested.According to CaughtOffside, the Reds are showing an ‘increasing interest’ in Jamal Musiala, who’s into the final two years of his current contract at Bayern Munich and appears to be stalling on whether or not to commit his long-term future to the Bundesliga giants.Sources speaking with the outlet hinted that the 21-year-old’s priority is to stay at the Allianz Arena, although he’s understood to be keen on keeping the situation open because of his ambitions to play in the Premier League. The Germany international’s…

Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga João Palhinha in action for Bayern Munich against Holstein Kiel in match day three of the Bundesliga. | Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Has João Palhinha done enough to secure a starting berth over Aleksandar Pavlović? In the opening two Bundesliga games, Bayern Munich manager, Vincent Kompany, wasn’t exactly experimental with his midfield selection, starting a trio of Aleksandar Pavlović, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. Bayern’s third Bundesliga match against Holstein Kiel, however, saw a small adjustment with Portuguese international João Palhinha coming in for Pavlović. The move was likely a good litmus test for Palhinha against slightly weaker opposition, but after a strong performance from the 29-year-old, Kompany may have left himself with a selection dilemma ahead for Bayern’s Champions League clash against GNK Dinamo Zagreb.Vincent Kompany touched on the competition in Bayern’s midfield, highlighting the amount of quality available (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).“We’re lucky to have the luxury in this position. There’s Palhinha, who’s a very good player as we saw today. Kimmich has also been great so far. Konni Laimer, Pavlović, an Incredible talent, Goretzka as well, very important. They simply have to fight to play as much as possible. Today Palhinha played a good game, just like Pavlović in the past two games. They have to carry on. It’s good for us,” said Kompany. As bizarre as the Leon Goretzka situation is, it is crazy that a player of such quality finds himself at the bottom of the midfield pecking order. It goes to show the quality and depth of the midfield at Bayern at the moment, especially with the emergence of the mega talent, Aleksandar Pavlović. While the quality and depth of Bayern’s midfield may cause a selection dilemma for Kompany, it may just as equally give him a tactical advantage. A deep and diverse midfield may allow Bayern to adjust to a variety of opponents according to their unique needs for the each game. Luxury is the appropriate word for Bayern’s midfield at the moment. That being said, Kompany’s greatest task will be finding a balance amongst the midfield, and the rest of the squad for that matter. Should the Belgian coach fail to do so, a deep and quality squad will become thin and inferior. An easy task? Not by any means.Who would your ideal Bayern Munich midfield consist of? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Always the perfectionist. Bayern Munich got back into action after the international break with a booming 6-1 demolition of newly promoted Holstein Kiel, continuing the strong start to the Vincent Kompany era.A spectator for most of the match, Bayern club captain Manuel Neuer had some positives to take away from the game. Speaking after the match (as captured via @iMiaSanMia), the goalkeeper said, “We got [into the game well]. We dominated and controlled the game right from the start. Of course, it’s annoying that we couldn’t keep a clean sheet. The goal was tough to defend and the striker did well. There are many positives from today. But games are now coming thick and fast, we want to win against Zagreb on Tuesday and in the Bundesliga on the weekend.”While Neuer might be upset to have conceded a goal from just 0.09 post-shot expected goals (FotMob), the main objective was three points and a strong performance, anything else is just gravy. The win was good, but it’s time to look forward to Dinamo Zagreb and the Champions League.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Weird time to score the club’s first home goal in the Bundesliga. Bayern Munich scored early and often in a 6-1 rout of Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel. On a positive note, Armin Gigovic’s header in the 82nd minute delivered the Holstein Kiel fans the club’s first ever Bundesliga goal at Holstein-Stadion.At the 15-minute mark of the first half, Bayern was already leading 3-0. Regardless of the opponent, that’s a nearly impossible margin to overcome. In the postgame interview (via FCBayern.com), Holstein Kiel’s managing director sport Carsten Wehlmann said, “we made too many schoolboy errors in the first 10 minutes. But the boys kept on going, so hats off to them for that. And we were rewarded for it with our first ever goal at home in the Bundesliga.”Team captain Lewis Holtby added, “you don’t enjoy losing 6-1. There was a gulf in class, we weren’t close to our level. Bayern are a top team, and they played superb positionally. There was always this feeling that they had an extra player. So, credit to Bayern. But being 3-0 down so quickly should not be happening. It was a game from which we can learn a lot. We’ll stick together as a unit, as there are many more opponents to come.”Despite losing the first three matches on the season, Holstein Kiel seems intent on improving their fortunes in the Bundesliga. Next weekend, Holstein Kiel will have a decent shot at winning against another winless relegation zone club, VfL Bochum.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel - Bayern Munich Photo by Gregor Fischer/picture alliance via Getty Images Domination. That was a blink-and-you-missed-it game from Bayern Munich in a 6-1 Bundesliga road win over Holstein Kiel that took the Bavarians to top of the table. That is, if you tuned in just a few minutes late it was already over. In just the first minute, Bayern hit Kiel over the top, Harry Kane flicking on to Jamal Musiala. Then Serge Gnabry and Musiala pounced on poor attempts to play out the back, resulting in two more goals (by Harry Kane and an own goal from unlucky Kiel defender Nicolai Remberg) before the quarter-hour mark.A feel-good romp in every way for the Bavarians. Now for some quick hitters:How about that near-goal from former Bayern youngster Fiete Arp? For a short phase in the second half, the game long ago decided, the home side had some attacking initiative. With Joshua Kimmich trailing the play, Arp collected a square ball inside the box and snatched at it, only to be denied a goal against his former team by the crossbar.Joshua Kimmich’s role was the subject of some discussion in the staff slack this game. From this author’s perspective, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany is trying to make the best use of Kimmich’s on-the-ball abilities all over the pitch — both in right-back positions, where he excelled last Rückrunde and where Bayern is perhaps weakest in terms of personnel right now — and in midfield.Michael Olise put in a smooth, high effort performance in his substitute appearance and capped it off with a well-deserved goal. Being in the right place, right time is a skill that shouldn’t be taken for granted...and he silkily warded off an attempted football tackle in the closing minutes on his way to dribbling towards another super attacking chance. How good it was to see Thomas Müller on the pitch. Radio Müller — the recent birthday boy — was at it in all of his 45 minutes of action, giving the refs an earful right away and gesturing at teammates to make runs even as the full-time whistle blew. Never change, Thomas.Time to vote!Player Ratings Vote (view results)Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Joshua Kimmich enjoying a quick catch up with former teammate, Jan-Fiete Arp, ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga clash with Holstein Kiel. | Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Is the crown prince of German football finally ready to be seated upon the throne for club and country? After being appointed as the new Germany captain, Joshua Kimmich finally seems to be growing into his leadership role at international level. While Kimmich has always been synonymous with a leadership figure at Bayern Munich in recent years, he has never quite been “the face of the club”.Before Bayern’s 6-1 drubbing of Holstein Kiel at Holstein Stadion, sporting director, Max Eberl, gave his vote of confidence for the 29-year-old to become one of the new faces of Die Roten. Kimmich has since responded to Eberl’s comments (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): “Generally speaking, it’s always nice to hear the backing and support from the club. I’m just enjoying the moment. It’s important to win the games.”Flattered by Eberl’s praises, Kimmich was asked about his availability to be a “face of the club.” The midfielder’s response may come as a surprise to some Bayern fans following a transfer window constantly linking him with a move away from Bavaria.“Yes, I’m available,” Kimmich said. It is quite surprising to hear Eberl refer to Kimmich as a future face of the club.Despite a subpar 2023/24 campaign, Kimmich remains one of Bayern Munich’s best players and has certainly been a face of the club for several seasons. His ability to deputise in the midfield and at right-back, combined with an acute leadership ability, the Germany captain seems indispensable in the future of Bayern. It sounds like Kimmich is also keen to be a part of that future. A scenario that seemed unlikely just a few weeks ago. Hopefully Kimmich can continue his strong start to the 2024/25 campaign and prove that he is indeed one of the faces, or if not, the face of Bayern Munich. FC Bayern München v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Marcel Engelbrecht - firo sportphoto/Getty Images This situation is lingering at Bayern Munich... Never has anything been more apparent than Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl’s desire to get rid of midfielder Leon Goretzka. The executive hit the media before Bayern Munich’s 6-1 victory over Holstein Kiel to reiterate that Goretzka probably has little chance of playing this season — with the clear insinuation that he might want to look elsewhere for a better opportunity. “We clearly communicated to Leon from the start that the competition would be tough with (Aleksandar) Pavlović, (João) Palhinha, and (Joshua) Kimmich, who we’ve planned to use in midfield. Leon was aware of this. I understand that he’s upset at the moment, but that’s part of football,” Bayern boss Max Eberl told Sky (as posted by Florian Plettenberg).Aside of Goretzka, it appears that Konrad Laimer had better start reading between the lines, too, eh?Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images The yearly stat-pad... Bayern Munich came out guns blazing as club football made a return, moving atop the Bundesliga table for the first time in over a year by securing a 6-1 win over newly-promoted Holstein Kiel. The floodgates opened within the very first seconds as Jamal Musiala put Bayern ahead and two goals in quick succession from Harry Kane and Kiel’s own defender saw Bayern take an early 3-0 lead before the 15-minute mark. Kane made it two with an effortless strike before the break. Micheal Olise added a fifth in the second half only for Kiel to score one back, but Kane finished the job and converted his penalty to record his first hat trick of the new season. Here are some observations from the game.World-class Vertikalspiel There is no doubt today that Kiel was astronomically poor — they had glaring holes in their structure, made it far too easy for Bayern to create chances, and messed up early on in the game setting the tone for Bayern players to run rounds around the Kiel defence. Nonetheless, a lot of Bayern’s build-up particularly in the first half was brilliantly done.In particular, the passing was great. Bayern constantly made an effort to play longer balls and make direct, vertical passes — something Bayern teams of late have missed. Kiel did make it easier for Bayern to play those passes, but it was nice to see the players actually make the best possible move in most situations instead of simply passing sideways. There was a sense of urgency and attacking direction tonight that has not always been there from the Bayern midfield. It will be interesting to see how Aleksandar Pavlović fits in this kind of setup, with such an emphasis on direct forward passing — an area in which the youngster excels. This was far from the ideal game plan, however. Bayern's many lapses in concentration led to the team losing possession often, and a better team would have punished Bayern rather than allowing them to win back the ball as easily as they did.The (almost) perfect attackSerge Gnabry has not been the easiest player to praise for a long time, but it seems that he is slowly beginning to find his groove again this season. Gnabry’s constant explosive runs were a focal point of Bayern’s attack in the first half and led to many chances being created off quick cutbacks and crosses into the box. It is a shame that Gnabry didn't get his own name on the scoresheet, because he certainly deserved a goal tonight.Vincent Kompany’s new system allows Kane to play his natural game more and work simultaneously as a creator in the final third and a finisher. Kane’s superb performance — and hat-trick — tonight was a testament to the same, proving again that he can do both better than most can do one. Musiala was as explosive as ever and his performance was a continuation of his form with the national team and a clear clapback at France Football and other critics after he was left out of the 30-man nominee list for the Ballon d’Or.If anyone might feel they could have left more out on the field, though, it was winger Kingsley Coman, who will hope for sharper and more influential days if he is to continue commanding a place in a Bayern attack with so many options. The bench didn’t helpOf course, in any game that ends with a massive scoreline favoring Bayern and a single goal conceded, it is impossible to ignore the goal Bayern conceded. The second half saw a clear drop-off in quality as subs from the bench were bought on to preserve players’ fitness for the upcoming Champions League opener, but it was not a very inspiring performance from most. Konrad Laimer was caught lacking (although Joshua Kimmich wasn’t any better at defending) during the Kiel goal and Mathys Tel didn’t provide anything of value. Michael Olise was a bright spot — he had some great moments and really should have started the game over Coman. Unfortunately. Thomas Müller did not get his birthday goal, but he was the subject of a foul that…
