Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images/DeFodi/DeFodi via Getty Images Bayern had to sell some players to keep the books balanced, and De Ligt one of the players ultimately let go. It is tough to argue with Bayern Munich’s record thus far, having won all four of their competitive matches thus far between the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga. They sit atop of the league table on nine points with a goal difference of +8. Perhaps the only downside of their record thus far is the fact that they have only recorded two clean sheets; one against SSV Ulm in the DFB-Pokal and one against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.Defensively, there is still work to be done for Vincent Kompany’s side, but the new manager no longer has Matthijs de Ligt to choose from in the center of his backline. The towering Dutch defender was offloaded to Manchester United during the summer transfer window in what was a move that did not go down too well with the majority of Bayern fans. Optics were made worse when the only defensive signing of the transfer window, Hiroki Ito, went down with an injury during a preseason friendly. So far, Dayot Upamecano and Kim min-Jae have been Kompany’s go-to center backs, a contract from the pairing of De Ligt and Eric Dier that had become the favorite of previous manager Thomas Tuchel.Over the weekend, after Bayern’s 6-1 win over Holstein Kiel, board member for sport Max Eberl was asked about the rationale for letting De Ligt leave the club during the summer window, especially since it was something not well received by the Bayern faithful. There had even been a petition mass-signed by Bayern fans urging the club not to sell him.“I followed it (the fan reaction), including the petition. I know that many fans identify with him. Nevertheless, I had to make this decision because we also had to sell players. We felt more comfortable with Upamecano and Kim because they can defend higher up the pitch. And then an offer came in for de Ligt,” he explained on Sport1-Dopplepass (via @iMiaSanMia). For what it is worth, Bayern’s front office did make a point going in to the summer transfer window of trying to alleviate the club’s collective wage bill, but De Ligt and fellow defender Noussair Mazraoui were not really a big part of that burden. Before the pair of defenders left for Manchester United, De Ligt was the ninth-highest earner at the club and Mazraoui was the fifteenth-highest earner. Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman, and Joshua Kimmich are all still on higher wages than De Ligt was and all three were potentially candidates for sale over the summer. For De Ligt, he has since said that a reunion at United with former AFC Ajax manager Erik ten Hag was not the sole reason he did decide to leave Bayern this summer, but more of the fact of how big and historic of a club the Red Devils are. For him, it was a new challenge he was not willing to pass up despite his affinity for Bayern. FC Bayern Muenchen Unveils Newly Signed Head Coach Vincent Kompany Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich might have signed a few keepers. Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is very happy with the new signings made by the club over the summer. “Michael Olise is an exciting winger who recently impressed at the Olympic Games in Paris. João Palhinha was supposed to move to FC Bayern last year - and the saying that you always see each other twice in life has proven true. Hiroki Itō was certainly one of the reasons VfB Stuttgart conceded fewer goals than we did last season,” Dreesen told Frankfurter Allgemeine (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). One of the biggest surprises of the the transfer window was how the moves appeared to come out out of nowhere — avoiding all of the leaks that occurred in previous transfer windows. “We had planned to close the hatches again. That has worked very well,” said Dreesen.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? VfL Wolfsburg v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Luciano Lima/Getty Images Harry Kane had kind words to say about Jamal Musiala... During Bayern Munich’s 6-1 demolishing of Holstein Kiel, Harry Kane tallied three goals but even the Englishman came away impressed with the work that Jamal Musiala put in during his 45 minutes on the pitch. Musiala scored a goal, created another that ended up in the net as an own goal, completed 88% of his passes, won four ground duels, and added an interception during his appearance after a tumultuous week — which saw the youngster draw criticism form Didi Hamann and find his name being being bandied about in transfer rumors. For Kane, none of that mattered. The Englishman just wants to see Musiala continue to be an effective attacking player. “If he keeps adding goals and assists to his game, then he’s going to be a frightening player,” said Kane (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). No doubt about that, eh?Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel - Bayern Munich Photo by Gregor Fischer/picture alliance via Getty Images When you win a game so convincingly, people need to try and find some sort of problem, eh? Bayern Munich demonstrated an array of attacking power and interesting tactical set ups that allowed the team to steamrollHolstein Kiel, with the team 4-0 up at halftime and running up the scoreline to a 6-1 finish today. But, looking at the scoreline, it is clear that not all went well. Despite not conceding a single shot in the first half, the home side did manage to score a late goal to ruin Manuel Neuer’s clean sheet. In fact, they even hit the woodwork twice. Is this something to be worried about? This is the question reporters asked head coach Vincent Kompany after the match and @iMiaSanMia captured Kompany’s straightforward answer: “No, I’m not worried. We defended very well. When you make 5 substitutions in the second half, it can happen that sometimes you’re one step too late or you don’t defend some situations 100% as you did in the first half. It shouldn’t happen, but it’s also good for us that we have these scenes to show the team that we can do better.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Joshua Kimmich had himself a day vs. Holstein KIel. Bayern Munich had many standouts during its 6-1 victory over Holstein Kiel, but no one — even on a day where Harry Kane scored a hat trick and Jamal Musiala was dazzling — might have been more effective and efficient than central midfielder Joshua Kimmich. Kimmich, who spent last season playing some in the central midfield and some at right-back, took advantage of Bayern Munich’s massive amount of possession and even when the team did briefly lose the ball, did his best to win it back. Kimmich won possession in the midfield 10 times against Holstein Kiel per WhoScored.com: Joshua Kimmich won possession in the midfield third 10 times in Bayern Munich's 6-1 win at Holstein Kiel on Saturday, a record in a Bundesliga match this season. pic.twitter.com/oiisVFBxjS— WhoScored.com (@WhoScored) September 15, 2024In addition to that, Kimmich also made 119 accurate passes, yet another season-high in the Bundesliga: Joshua Kimmich made 119 accurate passes in Bayern Munich's 6-1 win at Holstein Kiel, a record in a Bundesliga match this season. pic.twitter.com/iA79cuUPwd— WhoScored.com (@WhoScored) September 15, 2024It is these kinds of performances that have Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl ready to re-up Kimmich’s contract. “We felt with the way we want to play football, Josh fits better in midfield in order to bring his qualities. We also have two natural right-backs with Sacha Boey and Josip Stanišić. Therefore the departure of Mazraoui was only logical, because three right-backs would’ve been too much,” Eberl said during an appearance on Sport1-Dopplepass (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We spoke to Josh clearly. This is an important time for him. We made it clear to him that he should become one of the faces of Bayern Munich. We will aim for an extension, it’s a big topic for us. Joshua feels very comfortable in Munich. We told him whether he still has the fire for FC Bayern, and he still has it. I won’t talk about contractual details here.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Oliver Hardt/Bundesliga/Bundesliga Collection via Getty Images The Ballon d’Or controversy continues to rear its ugly head. Bayern Munich went on the road and defeated Holstein Kiel with an overwhelming 6-1 victory. Relegation zone Holstein Kiel made numerous errors that resulted in the spread, but Bayern’s high press and attacking prowess felt no remorse in the one-sided affair. In particular, Jamal Musiala was ruthless. He scored in the first 15 seconds and forced an own goal in the 13th minute. Musiala’s electrifying performance comes on the heels of the controversial vote from the Ballon d’Or to omit him from the top 30 list. Bayern alum Didi Hamann stoked the flames, calling Musiala selfish. As you’d expect, Musiala’s teammates and club have responded strongly to the criticism of the young phenom. In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Manuel Neuer plainly said, “I don’t think he has to answer anything because we’ve been seeing week for week and month for month what a class player he is. He doesn’t need any answers.”The fastest way for Musiala to silence the critics is to continue to perform like he did today.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Kompany said he’s always happy so long as the team play well, and they sure did in their big win over Kiel. Bayern Munich’s away trip to Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga could have been quite the banana skin for Vincent Kompany’s side. It was the first match back after the September international break and the match was against the side that knocked them out of the DFB-Pokal just a few short seasons ago, but the Rekordmeister handedly took care of business at Holstein-Stadion to stay at the top of the Bundesliga table on nine points. It has now been three wins out of three in the Bundesliga for the new Belgian manager.Harry Kane bagged yet another Bayern hat-trick in the 6-1 win; a match in which Jamal Musiala scored inside of the first minute and Kompany’s side went into the halftime interval up 4-0. Aside from the four goals between Kane and Musiala, Michael Olise bagged his first Bayern and Bundesliga goal while an own goal from Kiel’s Nicolai Remberg rounded out the scoring for the 32-time Bundesliga champions. For Kompany, it was just the type of dominant performance he would have called for ahead of their first match in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena against Dinamo Zagreb. Despite winning and cementing their place at the top of the Bundesliga table, Kompany was just pleased with the overall mentality and focus his side showed, while having the added bonus of being able to make some earlier substitutions to help preserve some freshness ahead of the busy weeks to come.“We’re not looking at the table right now. Today was a good win and a good performance. It’s important to win for the mentality. The mentality was there right from the start of pre-season. We saw today that we have a good squad, we have to carry on. It was ideal to lead 4-0 at half time, which allowed us to think of Tuesday and make some subs. I hope everyone stays fit, that’s the most important thing,” the manager explained (via @iMiaSanMia). FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-KIEL-BAYERN MUNICH Photo by AXEL HEIMKEN/AFP via Getty Images The transfer window has been closed for a few weeks now, but there is still always pressure from the outside for the manager of a club like FC Bayern. For Kompany, with a perfect record thus far from four competitive matches, there has not been reason yet for his critics to lash out at him, but he said that he is not bothered by all of the outside noise regardless. He is just focused on the squad and having them as prepared as possible for every given match.“For me the most important thing is the players. What’s happening around the club is not important to me. My role is to work with my players. When we win and play well I’m happy. When we don’t, I don’t sleep well. Otherwise, I sleep well no matter what happens [around the club],” he stressed after the big win over Holstein Kiel (via @iMiaSanMia). Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images/DeFodi/DeFodi via Getty Images The Champions League is upon us! Eberl won’t show hand on Tah (Sport1-Doppelpass via @iMiaSanMia)During an appearance on Sport1-Doppelpass over the weekend, Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl was quizzed about the club’s rumored pursuit of Jonathan Tah over the summer, but would not reveal too much about what might happen going forward: • Will Bayern sign Jonathan Tah next year?Max Eberl: “He’s out of contract in 2025, German international, played a big role in Leverkusen’s title campaign last season. That’s it. I’m extremely happy with Kim and Upamecano.”• Is there a deal with Tah to come next year?Eberl: “No. We negotiated, Leverkusen gave us a deadline and a price. We couldn’t meet either of those. It was only 48 hours and it was too tight for us. And we didn’t generate the income to be able to afford him.”With Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae, Eric Dier, Hiroki Ito, and Josip Stanišić in tow, getting Tah was not a major necessity for this season. However, Bayern Munich is rumored to want to revamp parts of the roster and adding another center-back during the 2025 summer transfer window is not out of the realm of possibility. Kimmich still on Barca’s shortlist (Mundo Deportivo via 90Min.com)Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is still rumored to be a favorite of FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick: Joshua Kimmich remains on the shortlist of Barcelona despite recent reports that he could extend his Bayern Munich contract beyond 2025. Hansi Flick, who previously managed Kimmich at the Allianz Arena, is a huge fan of his versatility. If Kimmich does not re-up with Bayern Munich (it seems like he will sign a new deal...at least at this point), Barca could be a prime candidate to land the Germany international. Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: Holstein Kiel 1-6 Bayern Munich (Bavarian Football Works)From the outset, Holstein Kiel had absolutely no chance against a motivated and energetic Bayern Munich side. The Bavarians stormed out an early lead, completely dominated play, and overwhelmed the home team in a blowout of a Bundesliga match. Here is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: The intense punch in the face felt when realizing the game was at 12:30PM EDT instead of 9:30AM EDT. A look at Vincent Kompany starting XI selections. A rundown of the scoring and substitutions. What fans can take out of such a match? How ready is Bayern Munich for the Champions League?Neuer offers support for Ter Stegen (Barca News Network)Throughout their respective careers, there has been a rivalry between Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and FC Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen. With Neuer retiring, Ter Stegen has taken the reins for the German national team — and Neuer is glad to see (or at least tha is what he is saying publicly...I kid, I kid): However, it would appear that Manuel Neuer has made no contact with Ter Stegen ever since his retirement. Now, that may end up changing quite soon as revealed by the former Germany goalkeeper in a recent interview to wish his successor all the best, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo:“All the best, of course. Not just for him but for all the other goalkeepers. I always hope we have strong goalkeepers. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone, including Marc.”It is no secret that these two players have had their differences in the past. While it has obviously not resulted in some kind of physical spat between them, it has still been obvious enough that the two have been rivals over the last several years rather than simply good-natured teammates.Rabiot in talks with Marseille (@FabrizioRomano)Free agent midfielder Adrien Rabiot is reportedly in “advanced talks” with Olympique Marseille: ⚪️ Olympique Marseille are in advanced talks to sign Adrien Rabiot as new midfielder!

SV Darmstadt 98 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, unless you ride the bench all season. Bayern Munich tasked the new management team with reducing the wage bill by 25% this summer. That task proved nearly impossible as highly compensated veterans like Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, and Kingsley Coman refused to accept pay cuts or even transfer requests.Gnabry and Coman have both come back to the club and earned immediate playing time. On the other hand, Goretzka has literally played one minute as an emergency center back substitute. In a recent interview with Sport1 (via @iMiaSanMia), director of sport Max Eberl said, “I told [Leon Goretzka] clearly that it would be difficult for him. That’s our job. He’s behaving well, I really respect him as a person. Sometimes things can change. The best example is Serge Gnabry. He took on the fight and is now a regular starter.”Goretzka is currently under contract with an €18M salary that has two years remaining. Vincent Kompany has a wealth of talent at center midfield, including Joshua Kimmich, João Palhinha, and rising star Aleksandar Pavlović. At this point, it looks like Goretzka’s opportunity will either have to outshine his teammates on the training pitch or take advantage of injuries as the schedule starts to pack more games into a small window.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga? Paris Saint-Germain v Bayern Munich - UEFA Champions League Final Photo by Matt Childs/Pool via Getty Images I mean, you knew this was coming, right? Right, let’s preface this with some context for the uninitiated.Football Manager is a video game series that essentially tries its best to simulate the experience of being a coach (with, of course, a lot of liberties to make it a game and not just having a job without the pay). Much like the ever-popular EA Sports FC series, a new installment is released annually, and recently the latest installment was free on Epic Games for a short while. Having played the 2015 and 2022 editions (conveniently named Football Manager 2016 and 2023 respectively) previously, I was of course compelled to immediately pick up the new game, and like I’ve done with every football game I’ve gotten my hands on, my first attempt at anything had to go through Bayern Munich. What followed is a week of my life being swallowed in watching digital versions of real people, forming relationships with said digital people and of course, maybe a few digital trophies along the way. While this will be a bit of a catch-up piece, any and all future pieces of this storyline will go more in-depth to really give readers an idea of what’s happening in the save, not just the broad-strokes. Of course, Patreon members will immediately be raising their hands asking if this is the save I’ve been sharing details about in the Discord, and the answer is yes, this is the very same team. Let’s dive on in.The 2023/24 Season: Fixing the mess TSG Hoffenheim v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Matthias Hangst/Getty Images I wake on the driveway, my hands on the wheel, wondering how the hell I got here
Now you’re gone, I finally found a tunnel turning into blinding light. Now FM24 starts at the beginning of the 2023/24 season, meaning I have the opportunity to rewrite history and make sure Thomas Tuchel never manages to break Bayern’s eleven-year long streak of winning the Bundesliga. However, this squad has some major holes for the kind of football I want to play.Wait that’s a good question actually, what kind of football do I want to play?Well, with Football Manager, there’s basically two ways to approach tactics. You can either have fun and try weird things to see if they stick, or you can play a 4-2-3-1 and win every game 6-0. Of course I wanted to try weird things, chief among them being using the libero role. The libero is a one-of-a-kind role, one I usually play when I’m playing football in real life and one I’ve never implemented in FM, so I knew I wanted to try it. However I didn’t see it working without a 3-at-the-back formation, which meant I was going to have to do something Pep Guardiola did a couple years ago: bin the wide defenders. Unfortunately, none of my wide defenders who were worth anything managed to get out the door, meaning I had to re-purpose them, with Noussair Mazraoui and Raphaël Guerreiro being re-purposed into the midfield and Sacha Boey being used as a makeshift centre-back. I did however manage to offload Bouna Sarr on a one-year loan with an obligation to buy that added up to just under €2m, which must be one of the best sales Bayern have ever done. Daniel Peretz and Aleksandar Pavlović were loaned out too.In terms of incomings in the summer, there were just two, but they were as high profile as it gets. Remember what I said about the game not being perfectly realistic? Well, I’m not one to let realism choke my decision-making, and I went big. The first was the deadline day completion of a deal to loan Manuel Akanji from Manchester City for one season, with an option to buy for €54m which I had no intention of activating. The other deal was the signing of Aurelien Tchouaméni from Real Madrid for €74m, with add-ons taking it to a maximum of €81m. How Real Madrid approved that deal, I’ll never know, and frankly I don’t want to ask. The team was now workable, temporarily at least. Media The most-used lineup during the 2023/24 season. The game plan was…

FC Bayern München v AS Monaco - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The youngster was never alone at the club... After this season, Bayern Munich is going to welcome back Paul Wanner from his loan stint at FC Heidenheim, but the club once welcomed the youngster for the first time when he was just 16-years-old. In a recent interview (captured by @iMiaSanMia), the talented youngster reflected on his experience working alongside some of football’s biggest names. When asked about sharing a dressing room with superstars like Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, and Jamal Musiala, Wanner spoke highly of their warmth and support.“What I have to say is that all of them are really nice. They welcomed me in a really lovely way. I still remember when I came, Jamal was also still very young, so it wasn’t that bad, because somehow he took me in,” Wanner said. He also highlighted the guidance he received from players like Joshua Kimmich, adding, “They are very friendly people and you can learn an incredible amount of things from them.”Wanner also commented on how he felt at home from the very beginning: “I can’t pick out a particular moment that was extremely helpful. I can just say that it was a really great time at the beginning and like I said, they welcomed me really warmly and it was a really good fit.” His comments shed light on the positive environment at Bayern, where young players like him are nurtured by experienced professionals. It’s clear that this support played a key role in his early development at the club.Looking for more thoughts on the contract negotiations between Bayern Munich and Jamal Musiala, plus a take on Didi Hamann’s recent criticism of Musiala? FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Goretzka really doesn’t deserve this. Bayern Munich enjoyed a 6-1 victory playing away to Holstein Kiel, and while this result might seem an indicator that all is well at Bayern Munich, this certainly isn’t the case for Leon Goretzka. This isn’t the first time Goretzka has been left out of the team this season, and with the amount of quality players at the club, it’s going to be tough for the former German International to gain Vincent Kompany’s favour.Bild reporter Michel Schröer has quoted Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund giving the excuse that (captured via @iMiaSanMia), “Leon got minutes in the last game and is training very well, but the squad is good and well equipped,” when asked about the midfielder’s presence. While it is good to know that Goretzka hasn’t been sidelined for any personal issues and is still committing himself well to the club, the fact that he is “training very well” and not part of the team speaks volumes of Freund and Bayern sporting executive Max Eberl having done a poor job in setting up the squad over the summer. There are simply too many good players at the club, and while this might not initially sound like a problem, it’s not fair to Goretzka that he isn’t getting minutes. Goretzka is far too good a player to be left out of the team.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 blowout of Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga?
