FC Bayern München v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Bundesliga/Bundesliga Collection via Getty Images The two best teams in the league meet for a showdown. Bayern Munich have always been THE team to beat in German football, a reputation earned courtesy of a long history of silverware at the very top level of professional football. However, that same reputation took a beating last season, thanks to the exploits of Xabi Alonso and this Bayer Leverkusen superteam.Vincent Kompany is here to set the record straight, and he has one hell of a team to do it with. Coming off a week where twenty goals were scored, people expect big things from this Bayern Munich side. Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane have all been on fire this season, while the Pavlović-Kimmich midfield has dealt with all challenges thus far. Still, can they handle Leverkusen? Especially THIS Leverkusen? It’s Bayern time. While you’re waiting for the game, why not check out our preview podcast? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Incredible goal, but an even more incredible mentality. Undoubtedly, the highlight of Bayern Munich’s long-awaited clash with Leverkusen was Aleksandar Pavlović’s rocket of an equalizer from over thirty yards out, and the passionate celebration right after. Speaking about the game, Pavlović too expressed a touch of remorse for not getting as much from the game as the team wanted: “We had so many chances and didn’t reward ourselves. The last touch was missing. We obviously wanted all 3 points. But I’m happy with the performance, we dominated them and barely conceded any chances.”In particular, when asked about his goal, Pavlović talked about how he felt after the ball went in and he kissed the Bayern badge: “I was very happy and emotional after my goal. I stayed positive [after the misplaced pass that led to the corner] and tried to motivate my teammates. Overall I think we’re going in the right direction and we’ll continue to work.” (via @iMiaSanMia)Fans were ecstatic after that goal and subsequent performance that allowed Bayern to pick up a point in the end, and will sure hope for more such performances from Bavaria’s very own in the near future. Did you enjoy Pavlović’s goal? How did you feel about the game? Tell us everything in the comments below!Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BAYERN MUNICH-LEVERKUSEN Photo by ALEXANDRA BEIER/AFP via Getty Images At least we can say we should have won that. Is that all it takes? A parked bus?The Bayern Munich offense looked unstoppable last week. Twenty goals scored, Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise all looking like world beaters. Now, that achievement feels a little hollow, because it looks like Xabi Alonso found a way to neuter Kompany’s offense completely. Leverkusen did something smart but unexpected — they sat back. Xabi gave it his all, putting out a back five and leaving Boniface and Terrier up top to fend for themselves. Surprisingly, it worked. Bayern Munich were relentless in possession, dominating the ball 70-30. Despite that, Leverkusen held tight and kept chances to a minimum. The fact that Harry Kane played 85 minutes and managed zero shots (shots total, not shots on goal) says it all. He only had 20 touches, fewer than Victor Boniface on the other end, despite Leverkusen having a fraction of the possession. On the balance of things, Bayern still should have won. Gnabry’s double hit on the woodwork was incredibly unlucky, and Michael Olise got extremely close to scoring as well. Jamal Musiala was brought down in the box by Xhaka and didn’t get a penalty, while Thomas Müller came incredibly close to scoring, mere seconds after being subbed on after Kane’s injury. There were enough chances. On the balance, Kompany’s game plan was almost good enough. However, it’s still a worrying outcome, especially given that Unai Emery’s Aston Villa is up next on the fixture list. Leverkusen are not a traditionally defensive team — Villa may well improve on the formula demonstrated by Xabi, so Kompany will need to find some answers. Kompany’s subs fail to make a difference Could the coach have done more? Perhaps. The subs were rather uninspired, almost like he didn’t know how to change the equation on the pitch.Serge Gnabry was subbed off for Kingsley Coman, who then struggled in much the same way attacking down Leverkusen’s right. Michael Olise and Raphaël Guerreiro for Leroy Sané and Konrad Laimer did practically nothing to tip the scales. Thomas Müller for Harry Kane was an enforced change in the 85th minute due to injury, and Müller only touched the ball thrice before the final whistle. In a way, it’s understandable — Bayern Munich were thoroughly dominating Leverkusen even before the subs, so they couldn’t have made much more of a difference. However, it does mean that the coach doesn’t actually have a plan B. Plan A seems rather excellent so far, but this Leverkusen game showed its limits. Having something else might have made the difference — after all, the final score was only 1-1. Here’s a suggestion from a layman. Instead of like-for-like subs, why not have Thomas Müller come on earlier (rather than Coman, for instance), move Musiala to the wing, and let the Raumdeuter play while players like Kane and Olise are still on the pitch? It could have given Leverkusen a new threat to deal with, by putting Musiala out wide and having two targets for crosses in the center. A small change in shape could have been enough. In the end, there’s no point dwelling on the past. If Bayern Munich can break down parked buses, we’ll find out in midweek. A (long) list of positivesDespite the result, there are plenty of positives to take away from this game. Last year, Bayern Munich weren’t competitive with Leverkusen. This year, with new tactics and a new coach, they forced Xabi Alonso to park the bus and start time-wasting from minute five. The defense was impeccable, with flawless performances from both defenders. Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae did not put a foot wrong, leaving Manuel Neuer with very little to actually do. Given that this is Bayer Leverkusen we’re talking about, that is a pretty big compliment to the central defenders. Alphonso Davies was also locked-in, keeping Jeremie Frimpong quiet on his side of the flank. We haven’t seen him this focused in years. Gegenpressing was the major…

FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images It was a frustrating watch yet there were some fanastic performances today... Following on from Bayern Munich’s draw against Bayer Leverkusen, it is time to pick out the best opposition player as well as the best defender, midfielder, attacker and the MOTM of the game.Jersey Swap: Robert AndrichShout out to Granit Xhaka, who used every bit of his experience and guile to frustrate the Bayern attack. But Andrich was even more involved, running around and doing so well to stem the tide of Bayern attacks flowing towards the Leverkusen. He would put in niggling challenges on the Bayern attackers, rile them up a little and cast his magic on the referee that he would get away with several dangerous tackles without a foul being called. That he was only called for one foul required a mastery of the dark arts. Andrich truly is the next Arturo Vidal, questionable haircut and all. Of course, he did score an all important goal that completely changed the trajectory of the match by netting an absolute belter. He may have even helped Leverkusen win the game this way if it weren’t for an even better strike...Der Kaiser: Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-JaeIs it allowed to give two people the award? Yes. Because I said so. Well, and the fact that Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae had the exact same job that they executed with absolute perfection. This is why Bayern were so willing to bet on them when everyone else said that they could not hack it. This is why they were willing to sell Matthjis De Ligt. Because they trusted in the duo’s ability to deliver performances like this. Their front foot defending was utterly unbelievable and completely destroyed Xabi Alonso’s game plan of absorbing pressure and hitting Bayern on the break or threatening with long passes to Victor Boniface. The two shut everything down, demonstrating a perfect understanding to both venture extremely high up the field and win the ball when Leverkusen tried to regain the ball to spring a counterattack and also ensure there would be no easy passes in behind on the few occasions one of the two was not able to win the ball by being covered by their partner. It so perfectly contrasts their performances from the last match against Leverkusen, in which the two looked uncertain in foreign roles and were completely overrun and embarrassed time and again. However, given today’s herculean task that they are entirely familiar with, they exceeded all expectations.Der Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichDeath, taxes and Joshua Kimmich winning “Der Fußballgott”. Some things in life are inevitable and so is Kimmich’s tendency to dominate a midfield. He completed 119 passes, ended up with 4 key passes, won 3 of his 4 duels in midfield and dictated the tempo from the start. Bayer Leverkusen’s players were clearly instructed to put more pressure on Kimmich than his other midfield partners and it paid off early with the ball given away cheaply once. After that, however, Kimmich was virtually faultless and utterly controlled the game despite the best efforts of the opponents. Der Bomber: Jamal MusialaNone of Bayern’s forwards were as exceptional today as when they scored those 20 goals in a week. There were some great moments from every attacker, however, with Jamal Musiala providing the best and most frequent moments of the lot. The fact that he eased past 4 opponents to win an early free kick Michael Olise just struck over and we all shrugged it off as if it was nothing is emblematic of how normal Musiala’s unbelievable brilliance is getting. The former FC Chelsea player would pop up in different pockets of space, roaming around, connecting with others and helping the play along throughout the match along some of his usual outstanding dribbles. Subsequently, he was rewarded as the only forward to not get subbed off. There was not too much else of note about his performance, but it was a good one that deserved the award.Man of the Match: Aleksandar PavlovićThis…

FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images The Bayern No. 6 is up to some new tricks — as well as all his old ones. Joshua Kimmich’s role this season for Bayern Munich is in the spotlight. The 29-year-old was at the center of Bayern’s failed quest last season for a new No. 6 — the jersey he wears and the position he had played at the club — under Thomas Tuchel, before team needs shifted him to right-back for the Rückrunde. Kimmich shined there for his club, and then for his country at EURO 2024…which may have inspired current head coach Vincent Kompany to craft a new role for Kimmich alongside defensive midfielders Aleksandar Pavlović and João Palhinha. While back in midfield now, Kimmich’s role also has him shifting into right-back positions, especially as the team advances the ball. But all of this is not appearing to remove his centrality or his influence on the game, as this stat from WhoScored shows:Most accurate passes in a Bundesliga match this season

Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images The newcomer is integrating fast with the German record champions — and has a Premier League connection to lean on. Bayern Munich may just have found a major transfer coup in Michael Olise. The 22-year-old, whom the Bavarians plucked out of English Premier League side Crystal Palace, is off to an electric start in Germany — flashing both goal-scoring and assisting abilities coming in from the left flank. It has certainly caught the eye of fellow former Premier League stalwart Harry Kane, who linked up twice with Olise — supplying and receiving an assist — in last Saturday’s demolition of SV Werder Bremen.“A fantastic player and a really good guy, he’s enjoying his time here in Munich,” Kane gushed after the Frenchman’s commanding display (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “And what a performance — scored twice and provided two assists, he was a constant threat. He wants to get his numbers up, he wants goals, he wants assists. From the outside you don’t see the real Michael, but inside he’s a really good guy, we’re having a good relationship so far.”Competition in Bayern’s attacking wings will be fierce, with Leroy Sané progressing in making his injury return and Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry options as well. But Olise is turning heads — and looks like he will be putting on show after show in a Bayern jersey for years to come.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on the mega-matchup between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this weekend? FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-KIEL-BAYERN MUNICH Photo by AXEL HEIMKEN/AFP via Getty Images But Bayern must win the league again, no other way around it. Bayern Munich’s stranglehold on the league trophy may have been snapped after 11 straight years, but that won’t mean they will let it stay that way. With challengers in Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Leipzig, and a revitalized Borussia Dortmund, things are heating up.“I have respect for the competition,” Max Eberl said (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “You should always have that as an athlete. We have competitors like Leverkusen, Dortmund and Leipzig, who have always reached the Champions League in recent years. I think the Bundesliga has become very exciting. We are motivated and want to bring the trophy back to Munich”.Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side finally lost after just over a year of not losing a single league match, and Stuttgart lost some key players. Leipzig is still a team to be wary of, while Dortmund is starting to look like a serious club. In the meantime, Bayern are top after three games played.
