In the biggest Bundesliga match of the season thus far, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen battled it out to a 1-1 draw. German internationals Aleksandar Pavlović and Robert Andrich were the unlikely scorers on the night, primarily due to Leverkusen’s defensive shell that severely limited the attacking spaces for both teams.Florian Wirtz has been a hot button topic in transfer rumors as of late, teasing Bayern fans with the possibility of him joining the club’s current phenom, Jamal Musiala. After the match (via @iMiaSanMia), Musiala and Wirtz were spotted hanging out in the Allianz Arena hallways.Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz after today's game pic.twitter.com/rCwjfGuiZ4— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 28, 2024According to recent reports, Bayern’s ability to consistently sign top talent is a key part of the efforts to sign Musiala to a contract extension. Wirtz is potentially a top ten player in the world who has realistic expectations to compete for the Ballon d’Or on an annual basis.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Do not get too excited, do NOT get too excited. I’m trying to convince myself here, too... When it comes to the contracts of players currently at Bayern Munich, there are few more important to keep an eye on than Jamal Musiala’s. The German’s contract expires in 2026 and there have been rumors for years that the biggest clubs in Europe are keeping an eye on the joint Euro 2024 golden boot winner. But as much as other clubs want Musiala, Bayern want to keep him more. Over the years, countless executives have expressed their desire to keep Musiala at the club for the next 10 to 15 years and the step to doing that would be to renew his contract. And it seems like the club is starting to make their move. @iMiaSanMia captured Kompany, speaking shortly after Bayern drew 1-1 against Bayer Leverkusen in a Bundesliga showdown, confirming contract talks between Musiala and Bayern: “There are talks between Jamal and the club. We will solve it as a Bayern family.”That is not much to work with, but if Kompany is able to officially confirm these talks it is likely that these talks have progressed beyond the initial phases with the former Chelsea FC youngster. The club is still likely a way away from an agreement with Musiala, but every step closer will be welcomed by fans and club alike.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München attends Oktoberfest Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Clearly, he couldn’t bear to leave Oktoberfests behind... At this point, it is an open secret. Bayern Munich communicated to Kingsley Coman that they were open to letting him leave and the Frenchman came close to leaving before eventually deciding to remain in Munich...for some reason. But why? It has taken a while but, nearly a month after any potential move collapsed and the transfer window slammed shut, Coman has given a little insight as to why he stayed.Speaking to journalist Kilian Kreitmair, and captured by @iMiaSanMia, Coman had this to say: “We spoke to clubs in different situations. In the end I decided that it was best to stay.”It seems there simply was no option better than the current imperfect one at Bayern. That does mean that there is potential for the situation to change and for a better destination to crop up for the former Juventus player, whether in the winter transfer window or the next summer transfer window. Or perhaps Coman will fight his way back into head coach Vincent Kompany’s plans? We will have to wait and see...Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images This went a lot better than the last time we faced Leverkusen. Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich faced its first substantial test of the season at home to reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, leaving opposition manager Xabi Alonso impressed. After the match, Alonso received the question (captured via @iMiaSanMia) of whether or not Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side was tougher opposition than Thomas Tuchel’s, and responded, saying, “Today was tough, yeah. We also got a draw here last season, but today was tough. They don’t give you a lot of chances to breathe. We had to be very disciplined and sacrifice. I’m proud of the team. I’m happy with the point.”Alonso is right to be proud, as Leverkusen fought hard for their point. The Bavarians were a dominant force throughout the match, enjoying 69% possession, and creating 1.32 expected goals across a total of 18 shots. This contrasts heavily with the meager 0.07 expected goals from the three shots Alonso’s men put forward (FotMob).Bayern faces Aston Villa in the Champions League for its next outing, and if the team can keep up its current level, 2024/25 will be a very successful season.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images A draw is a draw? Die Folgen: Bayern’s 1-1 draw against Leverkusen (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen finally took aim at each other and the match did not wholly live up to the hype. While it was an entertaining tilt, neither team was able to break through for many quality chances. In fact, Bayer Leverkusen sat so deep that it rarely could generate any offense at all in the 1-1 draw. Let’s get to it — here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s take a look at the starting XI: STARTING XI
Today’s lineup for our top of the table clash against Leverkusen! #FCBB04 pic.twitter.com/LpR44X3mVC— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) September 28, 2024This was one of the few times that I nailed the lineup prediction exactly in the Preview Show. This was truly as expected. Vincent Kompany has identified his best XI with this current roster group (factoring in the injuries) and is riding with it. Just two minutes into the match, Bayern Munich created its first good chance when Raphaël Guerreiro slid a short ball into Harry Kane, but it was just out of the Englishman’s reach. Neither team fully asserted itself early, but both had moments where they looked strong. If those Oktoberfest kits did not have a collar, they would go from good to great. It was very clear that neither squad was going to make it easy to generate good scoring chances. Bayer Leverkusen’s three attackers were all very high while Bayern Munich was in its build-up, but playing more of a style to contain Bayern Munich rather than take the chance with an aggressive press. From there, Bayer Leverkusen sunk back in deep to clog passing lanes and limit shots. It was more conservative than one might expect from Bayer Leverkusen. Bayer Leverkusen was sloppy at times and often looked like it was scrambling. You have to wonder if playing such a defensively style neutered the team’s attacking mindset.Eventually Bayer Leverkusen shifted into a more aggressive style after Bayern Munich dominated the first 25 minutes. If Bayer Leverkusen was effective at anything early on, it was keeping Harry Kane isolated and out of the action. Bayern Munich’s press was giving the Bayer Leverkusen backline and midfield complete fits at times. After a somewhat careless play from Aleksandar Pavlović resulted in a Bayer Leverkusen corner, the reigning champs were ready to seize the moment. Alejandro Grimaldo’s out-swinging corner found Granit Xhaka, who deftly played it over to Robert Andrich. Andrich’s long-range, groundball shot found its mark in the far corner for a 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen lead. Pavlović’s poor play to provide the chance might have been an effort to avoid making a real blunder. The young midfielder was attempting to play it back to Manuel Neuer, but likely saw a streaking Florian Wirtz heading right at Neuer and, instead, play it out of bounds to give Die Werkself the corner. That would not be the last we would hear from Pavlović, though. He made up for it in massive way with a goal. After playing down an attempted clearance with his chest outside the top of the box, Pavlović unleashed a half-volley of fury that had a wicked bend on it. It was a wonder goal of epic proportions. Pavlović showed great resilience after creating the opportunity for Leverkusen. Exactly the response you want to see.In the 48th minute, Kane sent a beautiful cross-field pass to Gnabry, who hit the post, which rebounded to Gnabry, who then hit the crossbar. It was almost unfathomable that neither shot made it in. If you believe in the soccer gods, that was a bad omen.Victor Boniface was very inactive and lethargic for Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso needed to get him out of the game. Michael Olise had a golden opportunity from close-range in the 57th minute, but Lukas Hradecky cut off the angle on his volley attempt. Bayer Leverkusen got nothing from Martin Terrier or his replacement Amine Adli.Kimmich and Pavlović were terrific in the…
FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Let’s hope for a speedy recovery. The topic of Harry Kane and injuries is a storied history, with the English striker having suffered numerous ankle injuries during his time at Tottenham. Luckily for Bayern Munich, his time in Germany hasn’t included any lengthy spells on the sideline, as Kane has remained relatively injury-free having spent just over a year at his new club.During Bayern’s 1-1 draw with title competitors Bayer Leverkusen, Kane received some studs to the ankle while attempting to block a pass and halt a Leverkusen attack. The play was eventually stopped, and Kane was given medical treatment before being taken off the pitch for Thomas Müller. After the match, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany (captured via @iMiaSanMia) gave an uncertain update regarding Kane’s potential injury, saying, “I’m not a doctor, but I hope [it’s] nothing serious. It’s still early to say. Hopefully, he’ll be fit for Wednesday.”BILD reporter Heiko Niedderer captured (via @iMiaSanMia) Kane explaining that, “[The injury is] painful, but I think it’s ok. We’ll check the foot again tomorrow.” More positive news is that Kane appears to be walking without much trouble, and believes he’ll be available for the match midweek against Aston Villa in the Champions League.Aston Villa on Wednesday?

CA Osasuna v FC Barcelona - La Liga EA Sports Photo by Ion Alcoba Beitia/Getty Images Oh, they must hate Bayern so much. Former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick currently plies his trade at FC Barcelona, and has had a good run of it thus far. The Catalans sit atop the table in La Liga, four points clear of Real Madrid and with seven wins under their belt. Before today, those seven wins represented a perfect record. Now, thanks to a loan player from Flick’s former employers, Barca have met their match. Bryan Zaragoza, on loan at Osasuna after being bought by Bayern last winter, had a excellent game against the Spanish league leaders, managing a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win. The win and three points bumps up Osasuna in the league table, while leaving Barca vulnerable to Madrid sneaking up behind them. The stats are below if you’re curious:Bryan Zaragoza vs Barcelona (4-2):
77 minutes played
1 goal
1 assist
2/3 crosses
1 big chance created
2 tackles
8/10 rating @SofascoreINT #LoanWatch pic.twitter.com/a0UOgCAfRU— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 28, 2024This is a great outcome for the 23-year-old, who suffered a tough start to his career in Munich by being subjected to the alleged “coaching” practices of Thomas Tuchel. If he can rediscover the spark that made Christoph Freund and Max Eberl buy him in the first place, he could come back and establish himself in the Bundesliga. After all, beating Barca is a good way to prove that you’re Bayern Munich material. Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Joshua Kimmich is going into captain mode... With the attack and midfield both excelling early on this season, most of the questions on Bayern Munich from fans and pundits alike, have been with regard to the team’s — sometimes — shaky defending.During Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, however, the center-back duo of Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae stood tall. The performance did not go unnoticed as midfielder Joshua Kimmich lauded his teammates.“The way they’ve been playing in the past weeks is brutal. They have to defend huge spaces. You have to have a lot of quality to stand 50-60 meters away from your goal and defend the big space behind you,” Kimmich told Sport1 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “They were criticized after the game against Wolfsburg, but the coach stood up for them in public and within the team. They’re now paying that back. Both are in outstanding form.”Truth be told, the center-backs were rarely challenged due to an ultra-conservative game plan from Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso. That said, Upamecano and Min-jae stood tall and neutralized almost every threat coming their way.It was an improvement, but tougher tests lie ahead. Will the upward trend continue?Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Yes we did, Manu. Yes we did. Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen’s top-of-the-table Bundesliga clash ended in a 1-1 draw after a brilliant team performance by Bayern yielded just a single goal, leaving fans who left Bayern should have gone home with all three points frustrated.Speaking post-game, captain Manuel Neuer echoed the same sentiment; “I think we deserved more today. We were the better team, we had more chances. The goal we conceded was annoying. We deserved all three points.” (via @iMiaSanMia)Bayern fell behind after a stunning goal from Robert Andrich that was worth only 0.03 xG but soon responded with a goal just as outrageous, worth the same xG points courtesy of Aleksandar Pavlović. Bayern’s repeated efforts throughout the remainder of the game couldn't put them in front, and Neuer seems to echo the fans’ annoyance.Who do you think deserved more from the game? FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images After that kind of goal, he could have probably slapped Berni in the face and he would have been forgiven. Though normally characterized by calm play and incredible maturity far beyond his years, something was a little bit off about Bayern Munich player Aleksandar Pavlović today during the Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen. His passes were less precise and his decision making less imperious, culminating in a really poor pass that gave away a corner. Just like that, Leverkusen had a chance to score and took it. Pavlović could only look on in agony as goalscorer Robert Andrich celebrated the opening goal from a set piece that resulted from his error.Speaking after the match, @iMiaSanMia captured Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany acknowledging Pavlović’s incredible talent but also highlighting the necessity of support when he makes a mistake: “[He is a] very talented young player. He plays with a lot of maturity. We support him when he makes a mistake and encourage him when he plays well. Hopefully he becomes a top midfielder not only in Germany but also in the world.”Of course, Kompany and Co. were privy to Pavlović’s demonstration of his potential to become a top midfielder with his gorgeous strike from outside of the box that leveled the scores again. Support this young player and, despite the odd mistake, that is what the club can get in return.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen?
