FC Bayern München Travel To Birmingham Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Eberl knows that an away day in Birmingham, England is no easy feat. There’s probably room for a Peaky Blinders reference here, but Bayern Munich have a tough test coming up in Birmingham, England this week in the form of a trip to face Aston Villa in the Champions League. Both sides are coming off of comprehensive wins in matchday 1 of the competition; Bayern having beaten Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 and Vill having beaten Young Boys 3-0. Ironically enough, both sides are also coming off of domestic league draws; Bayern having drawn 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen and Villa having drawn 2-2 with Ipswich Town. While Bayern sit atop the Bundesliga table, Villa could have gone level at the top of the Premier League table with Liverpool had they not given up a late goal to Ipswich’s Liam Delap, but Unai Emery more than likely had one eye on the Bayern visit midweek. This will be the first time the two sides have met in Europe since the 1981/82 cup final in which Villa won 1-0 in Rotterdam. Peter Withe scored the winner on the night. This time around, Vincent Kompany and Bayern will certainly hope the result goes a bit differently. For such a rare clash between two sides with such rich history, board member for sport Max Eberl is very much looking forward for the tough test away from home for the Rekordmeister. “It’s a big pleasure to play against a very good opponent. It was the most difficult draw you could have got in pot 4 - away in Birmingham. Vinnie has already said a lot that the stakes are very high because it will be an intense game. The performances of the last few weeks have contributed to us going there with optimism. We are going there to win,” he stressed in the mixed zone on the way to the airport for the flight to Birmingham (via @iMiaSanMia). Kompany is certainly no stranger to visits to Villa Park, both as a player and manager, but this will be his first taste of European action there as a manager and player. Villa had not been in European competition for quite some time until recently, but they have shown how good of a side they can be under Emery. FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. Aston Villa in the Champions League is coming up... Bayern Munich star striker Harry Kane saw his health in doubt ahead of the team’s Champions League match vs. Aston Villa, but Kane was able to attend training and looks focused on the match. “They have a good team, they deserve to play in the Champions League after their great season. I’m always happy to come back to England and play there. It will be a huge atmosphere, it will be their first Champions League game in a very long time, it will be special for them,” Kane told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). When asked if he thought Bayern Munich would look past Aston Villa, Kane dismissed the notion. “No, I don’t think so. We try to dominate every game and play our style. We will press high and try to win the ball. And hopefully score a few more goals than we did against Leverkusen,” said Kane.Looking for our thoughts on the Bayer Leverkusen game? Aston Villa v Arsenal - Premier League Photo by Joe Prior/Visionhaus via Getty Images Catch our full coverage of Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash against Aston Villa right here! Vincent Kompany returns to the England for the first time since taking over Bayern Munich (unless you count friendlies) to face Unai Emery and Aston Villa. At stake is three points and a significant amount of bragging rights. Bayern have some history with Emery, having been knocked out by his Villarreal team during the 2022 Champions League quarter finals. Maybe that’s why everyone seems to be taking this game very seriously this time round. Or maybe it’s the prospect of having to play without Harry Kane, or the fact that this will be Vincent Kompany’s first real test against a defensively stout team at the international level. Join us here on Bavarian Football Works for the full story. We have news, updates, podcasts, analysis, and a lot more besides — for this game and so many others! We never miss a match, so be sure to check it all out.

FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images The last time Bayern Munich faced an Unai Emery team with "Villa" in the name, it didn't go so well. That’s why Vincent Kompany cannot afford to underestimate his next opponent in the UEFA Champions League. Beating Dinamo Zagreb at home 9-2 was an incredible start, but an away game against a team in top 6 of the English Premier League is a whole different equation. Complicating matters is the situation surrounding Harry Kane. Will he be fit to play? If he isn’t, who can take his place? Team newsKane took part in the final team training before the squad flew out to England. He has been included in Bayern’s matchday squad, so you can assume he’ll play if he is fit. If he isn’t, then there are no other true strikers on the team to replace what he can do. The closest you’ll get is either Thomas Müller or Mathys Tel, neither of whom have started in a very long time. As for the others, Daniel Peretz, Josip Stanišić, Sacha Boey, and Hiroki Ito all remain sidelined. With the current situation in mind, Kompany will likely opt for very few changes in his lineup, fielding an almost identical starting XI to the one that started against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday: Media Looking for our thoughts on the Bayer Leverkusen game? SV Werder Bremen v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The DFB offices must be bored... Tensions are mounting in W*nk*r-gate as the the DFB is now launching an official investigation to thoroughly get down to the bottom of whether or not Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich should be penalized for — allegedly — calling Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes a w*nk*r (the fact that we have to star this out makes it all the more ludicrous). X account @iMiaSanMia captured the latest details: The DFB has now launched an official investigation against Sven Ulreich following the incident with Simon Rolfes, a spokesman of the association confirmed to @dpa. A decision will then be made as to whether the control committee will press charges against the 36-year-old or whether the proceedings will be dropped. The DFB is seriously going to waste time on this?Looking for more thoughts and analysis on the weekend in Germany? FC Bayern Munich Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images A new talent evaluator is on board... As expected, Bayern Munich has hired Nils Schmadtke to lead its scouting department after the departure of Markus Pilawa. The news came via a release from FCBayern.com: Nils Schmadtke, son of former Bundesliga goalkeeper and long-time manager Jörg Schmadtke, also stood between the posts during his active time, including in the youth teams of Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln as well as with the professionals of FC Ingolstadt. He started as a scout at 1. FC Köln in the 2016/17 season and moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach after three years in the same role. In the summer of 2020, he became head of the scouting department at VfL Wolfsburg before returning to Borussia Mönchengladbach as sporting director after two seasons. Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund was happy to bring Schmadtke aboard.“We are delighted to have won Nils Schmadtke for FC Bayern. Nils has already gained a lot of experience in professional football and brings with him a great deal of expertise in the field of scouting,” said Freund. “We want to identify potential players for FC Bayern as early as possible, and Nils will play an important role here. Nils will also be responsible for intensive integration with our FC Bayern Campus. We would like to thank Markus Pilawa very much for two years of good cooperation. We wish him all the best and much success on his future path.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on the weekend in Germany? Aston Villa FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League Photo by Neville Williams/Aston Villa FC via Getty Images Bayern Munich is off to jolly ol’ England... Former Bayer Leverkusen attacker Leon Bailey will experience a little déjà vu when he looks across the pitch on Wednesday. Waiting for him will be his old nemesis from his time in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich. Needless to say, Bailey knows there is a tough task ahead of Aston Villa in the Champions League. “It’s a big game, Villa Park is going to be exciting to see. We know Bayern have been brilliant in the Champions League for years and we are trying to be that team which plays in Europe regularly again. These are the teams you want to face. This is what we have been working for, to be playing in the Champions League and against these big teams. The message to the fans is just give us the best support you can and we will do the best we can to get the win,” Bailey told Birmingham Live (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Bayern Munich might be a bit vulnerable given that Harry Kane’s status is in doubt, but is Aston Villa going to have enough juice to knock off a giant?Looking for our thoughts on the Bayer Leverkusen game? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Now THIS is what we call an injury crisis. It’s early in the season but Bayern Munich already have a full blown injury crisis to deal with. On the eve of the club’s inaugural Champions League league stage game against Dinamo Zagreb, it was announced that Sacha Boey had suffered a meniscus tear and would be out for “several weeks.” With Josip Stanišić already sidelined, Vincent Kompany has to deal with the reality of coaching his UCL debut without a single natural right-back. It’s a good thing he has a few backup options. Team newsIn addition to the two right-backs, Hiroki Ito is still out with a broken foot. With this in mind, Vincent Kompany doesn’t have many options regarding his starting XI. Assuming the most likely configuration, we’ll probably see Harry Kane up top with Jamal Musiala behind him, Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry on the wings. Aleksandar Pavlović likely returns to the starting lineup next to João Palhinha, with Joshua Kimmich being moved to right-back. With this defensive reshuffle, Bayern Munich should be able to cope with the loss of Boey and Stanišić for the next few weeks. Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae likely retain their spot in central defense, and Alphonso Davies returns to the XI at left-back. With Manuel Neuer in goal, here’s what the lineup could look like: Media Looking for a more in-depth preview of the game? Curious about the formation Vincent Kompany has been using lately? SV Werder Bremen v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Could both stalwarts still have more left in the tank after this campaign? Bayern Munich legends Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller are inching ever closer to the twilight of their careers. But just how much do the pair — 38 and 35 years of age respectively — have left in the tank? Each has a contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 season. But Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund is not counting them out just yet.“We don’t need to talk a lot about Manu and Thomas,” Freund said recently on the topic of the duo’s future (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’re in good talks with them. They’re currently in really good form. They had a good start to the season together with the team and we’re happy to have them. We’ll speak calmly in the coming weeks and months to see what their plans are and how they see their roles. We know what we have in them and they know what they have at Bayern.”It was previously reported that Bayern planned talks with Neuer for the upcoming Spring — but could Müller, too, be in line for one more year after this one?And if they both make it to the end of 2025/26, does the FIFA 2026 Men’s World Cup start to look like a tempting option for a pair currently retired from the German men’s national team?Never say never…For now, Neuer and Müller are enjoying their football, and Bayern fans are lucky enough to continue enjoying them. Long may it last.

FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Good news for Bayern Munich fans... Good news for Bayern Munich fans — star striker Harry Kane was a participant in team training, which should provide optimism that the Englishman will be back on the pitch with his teammates for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Aston Villa. Kane picked up a knock on Saturday against Bayer Leverkusen and there was doubt that he would be able to return in time: Harry Kane is back pic.twitter.com/duKwH4cnfx— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) October 1, 2024If Kane can go, that should allow head coach Vincent Kompany to roll with a similar lineup to what he has used during the team’s strong stretch. The only players who did not participate in the training session were — as expected — Hiroki Ito, Josip Stanišić, and Sacha Boey: Except Itō, Stanišić and Boey, everyone is available in training

Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Well, clearly he was just comparing Rolfes to Paul Wanner. If anything, that is a compliment. Wait, what do you mean there was a ‘k’ in there? Bayern Munich’s highly anticipated clash with Bayer Leverkusen was a heated affair, with both sides constantly getting annoyed at each other during the heat of the moment. Sven Ulreich possibly took it a step too far, though. There seems to be a video circulating of Sven Ulreich insulting Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes by saying ‘Sit down Rolfes, you wan**r’. Bayern have subsequently responded to this and @iMiaSanMia captured the statement: Bayern says Ulreich said that in the heat of the moment. He’s aware that the choice of words was inappropriate and apologizes for it.Of course, this incident somewhat mirrors Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro’s derogatory remarks about Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl and the subsequent reaction from Rolfes was not much different from the one Bayern had, as captured again by @iMiaSanMia: “I neither heard nor noticed it. Everyone is responsible for the level of their words.”But it may not remain on the level of a small spat. As captured yet again by @iMiaSanMia, It seems the DFB might also be interested in the incident: Following Sven Ulreich’s insult towards Simon Rolfes on Saturday, the DFB’s control committee is ‘aware of the incident’ and is reviewing it. But it’s not yet clear whether an official investigation will be launched. There’s no official statement from the DFB yet The punishments could range from a fine to a ban, so this is a situation to keep an eye on. Of course, it is unlikely that a ban would really affect Bayern that much unless Manuel Neuer was to get an injury, but at least Daniel Peretz might make it onto the bench again...Looking for more thoughts and analysis on the weekend in Germany? Ipswich Town FC v Aston Villa FC - Premier League Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images It’s almost times... Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is eager to engage in European nights on the biggest stage — Wednesday’s match against Bayern Munich will qualify as just that kind of game. “It will be unbelievable, I’m sure. The first Champions League game at Villa Park in so many years. It’s massive for the fans, and obviously us as players. It’s going to be a great opportunity to showcase what we can do again on the biggest stage. It’s the biggest stage so you’re going to play against the biggest teams. But those are the sort of draws you want if you want to test yourself against the best and we are all really looking forward to it,” Watkins told UEFA.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’re in capable hands with our manager. He’s experienced Champions League football at the highest level, so whenever he puts out a game plan, we always trust what he’s going to do, but also he’s implemented a style that all the lads are fully taking to and we’re confident that if we play to the best of our ability then we can hurt the very best. We’re just going to enjoy the experience and work hard to beat the teams that are in front of us and try to go all the way.”The Bavarians are coming into the match on a big of a hot streak, despite Saturday’s 1-1 draw vs. Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Aston Villa has also been in solid form this season, despite its own 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town last weekend. Looking for our thoughts on the Bayer Leverkusen game?
