FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Bayern Munich’s starting XI lineup raised some eyebrows. When Bayern Munich’s lineup dropped there was a major surprised (no Jamal Musiala!) and a somewhat expected exclusion (no João Palhinha), so naturally there were questions. Kompany said Musiala’s benching was all about workload management. “We have to look at the workload a little bit. The game against Leverkusen cost a lot of energy. If we have the feeling that someone is not fresh, then we have the squad for that. Jamal has not felt so fit in the past two days. He can still come off the bench,” the coach told DAZN (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). When it comes to João Palhinha, though, Kompany did not want to delve into the specifics of what the Portuguese midfielder was once again left on the bench. “It’s about the guys who will play. I always only talk about the team, I want to keep that. I want to break with the tradition of talking about the players who don’t play. He will still play a key role in the season,” Kompany said. The W*nker-gate controversy might finally be coming to a conclusion — at least in one respect.Speaking to DAZN (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said that Sven Ulreich contacted him, apologized, and that the matter is over in his eyes. “Sven Ulreich has contacted me. That’s over for me,” Rolfes said. Well, w*nks for nothing. While Rolfes comments are nice and could be true, the DFB has already launched an investigation and could be looking to crack down on the Bayern Munich back-up goalkeeper. FC Bayern München v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Fully loaded and ready for Aston Villa. The last time Bayern Munich had a Champions League midweek game, the German record champions went on a three-game tear of scoring 20 goals. For Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany this is as fearsome an attack as he has seen. And he has seen some high level attacks in his day, which included a long run as a Manchester City player under Pep Guardiola.via @iMiaSanMia“We’re very happy that many of the boys have performed well in the attacking area,” Kompany said ahead of Wednesday’s Aston Villa match. “Now in every area. I’m convinced that these players belong at the top — Serge [Gnabry] is one of them. Just like Michael [Olise], like Kingsley [Coman], like Mathys [Tel] — I hope I’m not forgetting anyone. I’d have to name all 24 so that I don’t forget any of them. “The boys have a lot of quality. I can compare that with my time as a player at the top level. I just hope we all stay fit. That will be crucial, and we’re doing everything we can as a club to achieve that. Then we have quality and talent.”Kompany of course did not even mention Harry Kane or Leroy Sané. GERMANY-DORTMUND-FOOTBALL-EURO 2024-ENGLAND VS THE NETHERLANDS Photo by Meng Dingbo/Xinhua via Getty Images Two England strikers are set to go head-to-head (maybe). Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has been around Bayern Munich star Harry Kane during their time together with the German national team. Clearly, Kane has made an impression on the youngster. “Harry is a top player, everyone knows what he’s capable of, he’s shown what he can do over the previous seasons so everyone knows his threat but the whole Bayern team are one of the best teams in the competition. He’s got the records and scored the amount of goals he has for a reason. He gets all the credit he deserves. He’s put in a lot of hard work over the years,” Watkins said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). If healthy, Kane figures to play a key role in Bayern Munich’s attack as he always does. As for Watkins, he will be look to put a scare into Bayern Munich’s backline, which has been solid of late. FC Bayern München v GNK Dinamo - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD1 Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Trophyless? Never gonna happen again Bayern Munich, being Germany’s most successful club, simply does not have the word “trophyless” in their vocabulary. It’s happened only twice in the past 12 years and for someone like Vincent Kompany, he is well aware of the club’s lofty standards and referenced his “winning culture” back in Belgium.Q: Which goals did the Bayern management set for you? Winning the Champions League and the league title?Kompany: Of course, at a club like Bayern, you have to win trophies. But that’s nothing new for me. I grew up in this winning culture at Anderlecht. Even at Burnley, a club that had the third smallest budget in the Premier League, I wanted to win every game.— DH le Sports+ via @iMiaSanMiaThe 38-year-old former Manchester City and Hamburg SV defender has gotten off to a good start to the season, winning his first five competitive matches as coach of the Rekordmeister.

FC Bayern München Travel To Birmingham Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich’s winger knows his way around Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry knows his squad will face a challenge from Aston Villa in the Champions League, but also feels as if Vincent Kompany has the Bavarians ready.“Aston Villa is a very strong team that has recently been very consistent under Unai Emery and strong physically. It will be a very exhausting, very difficult game. They also defend very well - so it won’t be easy tomorrow,” said Gnabry (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The coach demands a certain desire, a high level of intensity, so that we don’t give the opponent any chances. That’s what sets us apart, it feels great that we are so dominant again. We haven’t been able to do that so well over long stretches in recent years”Gnabry has been one of the players who seems to have experienced a resurgence under Kompany. The attacker acknowledged that it had less to do with his position on the field than being healthy and being a part of an offensive machine. “There isn’t much change in my position. Our game is very good right now, very dominant. It feels good. We want to have as much possession as possible, be efficient up front. So we can’t complain at the moment,” said Gnabry. “The past few weeks and months have been much better for me than the end of the second half of the season. I feel good this season, I had a long break and unfortunately missed the EUROs, which was bitter. My body is fine now and I’m looking forward to playing a lot again.” Looking for our thoughts on the Bayer Leverkusen game? Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 One defensive breakdown (on a couple of fronts) hurt Bayern Munich... When Aston Villa attacker Jhon Durán freed himself from the defensive radius of Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, the Colombian saw just enough daylight to unload his shot attempt over a prone — and out of position — Manuel Neuer, who had played ultra-aggressive all game with his positioning. Neuer’s “live by the sword, die by the sword” style has served him well over the years, just not during Bayern Munich’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Champions League. “Everyone knows that I do that [come off his line] every game. The striker did well. I could’ve been two meters behind, but that’s our game. I don’t know if the coach will ask for something different after this goal. Calculated risk? That’s our game,” said Neuer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Ah, but it does take two to tango and Durán would not have gotten free if not for some poor positioning from Upamecano, who was playing while on a yellow card. Either way, Kompany will likely have to give Neuer the “yay or nay” on whether or not he wants the goalkeeper to proceed with his risky style. After a career of living on the edge, it seems like it might be difficult to change now for the veteran goalkeeper. Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern Munchen - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by James Baylis - AMA/Getty Images Does anyone really deserve an award here? Bayern Munich crumbled against Unai Emery’s brand new Aston Villa. Here are the match awards (grudgingly bestowed, with extreme difficulty while choosing).Jersey Swap: Emiliano MartinezThe Argentinian goalkeeper had a near flawless game. He was constantly on alert, and his reflexes were on point. Emi Martinez was forced to make seven saves this game (not exactly the best number from Bayern), and each of those saves was phenomenal. Despite facing an xG of 0.94, Martinez managed to keep a clean sheet for Emery’s Aston Villa, which is not exactly an easy feat to accomplish. Der Kaiser: NobodyBayern Munich’s defense seemed to be in complete lapse for most of the game. Multiple mistakes, risky playing style, and just all round bad defending led to the goal scored by Jhon Duran. There were multiple dangerous instances that could have led to a goal from Villa, had it not been for a lack of finishing ability. Kim Min-jae forgot to mark his man every now and then, Dayot Upamecano was defending with zero consideration of fouls, and the rest of them created the perfect storm of mistakes (as CSmith so poetically phrased it). Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichKimmich seemed to be the only one trying to win the game on the pitch. The occasional lapse in judgement set aside, Kimmich seemed to be playing decently well in the midfield, away from his increasingly more common position at right-back. Consolation prize goes to João Palhinha for his efforts after being subbed on. Although his efforts didn’t make too much of a difference, the thought is what counts (can you tell I’m pulling at straws for these awards?).Der Bomber: Jamal Musiala As expected, Bayern’s star boy once again showed up. Despite being benched, and playing only 45 minutes of the game, Musiala was trying his best to put Bayern at the advantage. His efforts didn’t amount to much, but appreciated nevertheless, considering the complete and utter lack of effort from other attackers (looking at you Kane). He was responsible for creating multiple chances throughout the second half, and it is this perseverance that gives fans hope for the coming games. Meister of the Match: Alphonso DaviesDespite not contributing too much to the defense, the Canadian had an otherwise good game. He was constantly involved in Bayern’s attack, and was seen in the final third of the pitch at key moments. His dribbling skills also seem to have improved, showcasing some of his skills against Villa today. This may be motivation for the board to renew his contract and keep him at the club for some more time. What did you think of our award selection? Who else deserves a shout? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Kim and Upamecano have been Vincen Kompany’s go-to center back pairing for most of this season thus far. Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the season under Vincent Kompany came to an end with their 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena over the weekend, but their performance was quite arguably deserving of three points. It took two spectacular goals from Robert Andrich and Aleksandar Pavlović to get passed Manuel Neuer and Lukas Hradecky, respectively, and there was hardly either keeper could do to stop said attempts. From Bayern’s point of view, with the number of chances they created, they surely would have wanted to score more than once and come away with maximum points, but that still cant take away from the positive performance they put forth. On the overall balance sheet, Bayern out-shot Die Werkself 18-3, and one of Leverkusen’s three shots was from close to half field, so Kompany was pleased with the fact that his side was able to keep the reigning Bundesliga champions relatively quiet on the attacking front. He would have hoped for a clean sheet, but there was no denying how well hit Andrich’s shot was, having also travelled through a great deal of traffic in Bayern’s box en route to goal. To date, Bayern have kept a total of two clean sheets across all competitions, but there have still been significant improvements from a defensive standpoint. Dayot Upamecano and Kim minjae have become Kompany’s preferred center back pairing, both of whom struggled for large portions under Thomas Tuchel last season. The previous Bayern manager’s preferred pairing had been Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt, the latter of whom is now with Manchester United. After the Leverkusen draw, club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen spoke highly of the improvements he has already seen so far this season with both Upamecano and Kim. “Min-jae and Upa played an excellent game [against Leverkusen]. Our centre-backs were really good. First of all, I’m happy for both of them. They were both criticized last season, and they certainly didn’t perform at their best in a few games. It’s just nice that Min-jae came back with new self-confidence after the trip to Korea, that he has the coach’s trust, that the coach has put the two of them up as his preferred duo, even against public opinion, he always played them. And you can see that they are developing more and more joy in playing and working together. And that’s nice,” he enthused to Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch (via @iMiaSanMia). Both before and after the upcoming international break, Bayern have a series of English Weeks, but only time will tell how much Kompany will choose to rotate Upamecano and/or Kim out of the back line to preserve them as much as he can. He will soon welcome the return of Hiroki Ito, who has been out of action since the middle of preseason after sustaining a significant injury in the 1-1 friendly draw against FC Duren in Tegernsee.

FC Bayern München v TSG Hoffenheim - Google Pixel Frauen Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images for DFB Still perfect. Bayern Munich stayed atop the Frauen-Bundesliga table with a commanding 4-0 road victory last Sunday over SV Werder Bremen. The scoreline, however, belies how hard-fought the victory ultimately was. While Bayern dominated possession throughout, Bremen got their share of chances — 12 shots to Bayern’s ten, with four on target. The home side had a decent opportunity to strike first through Tuana Mahmoud, whose looping shot in the 18th minute looked like it was arcing just over the crossbar, but it was close enough to prompt Bayern keeper Maria-Luisa Grohs to palm it away to be safe.Bayern finally struck in the 26th minute through Lea Schüller, who volleyed home a Klara Bühl corner from the far post. But the score stood still at 1-0 to the end of the half, and early in the second, the FC Bayern Frauen went a woman down after defender Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir was booked for a second time for a tough challenge. But the player disadvantage could not spur the home side on to a comeback. Georgia Stanway sent in a scorcher in the 71st minute to double the Bayern advantage, and in the 85th, the visitors put the game to bed with a quickfire double. First, Sydney Lohmann played in Lea Schüller’s defense-splitting run with an arcing pass, and the Bayern striker rounded keeper Livia Peng before burying the 3-0. Immediately after, Jovana Damnjanović collected from within her own half and dribbled the rest of the way to essentially a solo goal (Stanway was credited with the assist) to settle the score at 4-0.Highlights below:Bayern hosts FC Köln next on Saturday and welcome Arsenal FC to open UEFA Women’s Champions League play the following Wednesday.

Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images What can you say? The Bayern Munich star likes playing in England... For a lot of players, a trip into England for a Champions League tilt can cause a lot of anxiety and consternation. For Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry, it is not so bad. Not only does Gnabry have experience playing in England during his time with Arsenal FC (Gnabry played for the Gunners and also went on loan to West Brom), but he has routinely smashed any English club standing in his way since joining Bayern Munich. “I was very young when I came to Arsenal, then I came to West Brom, didn’t play so many minutes, that didn’t work out so well. But I met great people and was very motivated afterwards to show what I was capable of. A difficult time always makes you hungrier and motivates you even more. I learned that you have to go through good and bad times - and you can learn from everything,” said Gnabry (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Playing in England is very special, there’s a great atmosphere in the old stadiums. For people here in England, football is often the most important thing - I’m looking forward to playing here tomorrow. This will be Villa’s first Champions League home game in many years, the place will be rocking.”Surely, there will be a raucous atmosphere, but that probably will not slow down Gnabry, who has two goals and three assists in seven games across all competitions this season so far. FC Bayern München v Sport-Club Freiburg - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. Aston Villa...are you ready? How Kompany went to bat for defensive duo (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia)Following a shaky showing, reports had emerged — among a lot of criticism — that Vincent Kompany had taken the back of his sometimes maligned defensive duo of Kim Min-Jae and Dayot Upamecano. In particular, Min-jae had a tough day against the Wolves. However, Kompany made a stand in front of the squad to make the point that he was all good with Upamecano and Min-jae, per Sport Bild’s Christian Falk: After the game against Wolfsburg, where there was renewed criticism against Kim and Upamecano, Vincent Kompany reacted immediately. In front of the entire team, the coach stood up for the two defenders and spoke about what a huge task it is for them to defend so high up the pitch, sometimes 50 meters from their own goal - always with the risk that the slightest mistake could be punished by the opponent with all the free space left behind. Kim and Upamecano were grateful for the unexpected gesture of support from the coach. That was a noble action from Kompany, but the duo will be tested soon enough. Bayern Munich are certainly hoping that the confidence boost provided by the boss will make a big difference when that time comes. Chelsea, Osimhen still doing the transfer dance (ESPN)Chelsea FC and Victor Osimhen are still nodding at each other from across the bar: Chelsea remain interested in Victor Osimhen but will have to wait until closer to January to make any progress on a deal for the striker, says Fabrizio Romano. The Nigeria international is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, where he has scored two goals in his first three appearances, having fallen out with the Italian club after a summer where he made it clear he wanted to leave.Osimhen was negotiating a transfer worth €80m with Saudi side Al Ahli, but it fell apart and Chelsea could not close a deal on Deadline Day. FC Bayern München attends Oktoberfest Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images The Bayern Munich boss is ready to take down Aston Villa... Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany spent last season at the helm of Burnley in the Premier League, so he knows how much Aston Villa’s return to Champions League means to the club.“Everyone knows it’s been over 40 years since Aston Villa last played in the Champions League. What they achieved last season is extraordinary, they deserve it. They are a very well organised team with a good atmosphere at home. But Bayern Munich are used to these nights - and we want to enjoy it ourselves and hopefully the players are excited to play here,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I was in England for 13 years in total, my wife and children are English - but tomorrow we’re playing as Bayern Munich. And here we want to get the result we want against Aston Villa. But I know the stadium, the team and the coach very well - so it’s important that we go into this game tomorrow with full courage.”Of course, Kompany had to deal with the question everyone had on their mind as well — whether Harry Kane will start tomorrow. Per his norm, Kompany kept his cards close to his vest. “Harry Kane trained today and it went well. But we have to wait until tomorrow and be sure if things stay that way - then we can calmly make the right decision. Hopefully everything stays well,” Kompany noted. When asked about another player who made his mark in the Premier League, João Palhinha, Kompany was also evasive. “For us, it’s always about competition. It’s not about experience - we have so many world champions, champions in Germany or England in our squad. We have this experience throughout the squad. But it’s about intensity, every player in this squad will be important. I’m only saying that for now, but you will all see that things won’t work without this big squad. That’s hugely important,” Kompany stated. “The most successful football works with top players. Then, as a coach, you have to make a decision about which path you want to take. And every coach is different, everyone has different convictions. It’s about the players wanting to fight, wanting to run, wanting to enjoy playing and having the belief that they can achieve something. It doesn’t work any other way.”Finally, Kompany was asked if he learned anything from his team’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. “It feels like the Leverkusen game was two weeks ago. That’s how much time I’ve put into preparing for Villa. But what we can take is the intensity. It’ll be a tough away game. It’s now only about the next 90 minutes. We need full concentration and energy again for tomorrow,” Kompany said. Looking for our thoughts on the Bayer Leverkusen game? Aston Villa FC Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by Cameron Smith/Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. Aston Villa is on tap! Aston Villa coach Unai Emery is no stranger to Bayern Munich. The coach has had his share of run-ins with the Bavarians over the years during European play. Needless to say, Emery has been impressed by what he has seen from the Bavarians this season.“We’re going to play against one of the best teams in the world. They’re maybe one of the 3-4 favourites to win this competition. I want to play matches like that. Of course we’re already playing teams like that in the Premier League - Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, who are also favourites like Bayern Munich,” said Emery (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “But to play in Europe, we’re very happy to face Bayern here at home and hopefully we can enjoy the game tomorrow, compete with them and show our best.” Emery went further into the match when discussing new Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany. ”I knew him last year here with Burnley, but his career is very recognised as a player, as a professional in football. As a coach, he started two or three years ago and he worked with Pep Guardiola in Manchester City. More or less, he’s been successful so quickly. With his experiences and the experience of working with Guardiola, everything I watch of him as a coach, in Burnley and now with Bayern Munich, is really huge work,” Emery said. “I think he’s a coach that has a very good future and he started being successful with Burnley when he got promoted. Last year was difficult with Burnley at the beginning, favourites to get relegated. He didn’t achieve to keep them in the Premier League, but I always respect him a lot as a coach because the two matches we played were very difficult.“With Bayern Munich and the players they have, I think it’s easier to get the level they will want to have in their league and in the Champions League.
