Bayern Munich’s scorching start has hit a little bit of a bump in the road, so this weekend’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt figures to be an important one. This is what we have on tap for this episode of the Weekend Warm-up Show:Breaking down the Vincent Kompany conundrum — it is okay to criticize him as he goes along the path of figuring out how to make Bayern Munich the best possible team it can be. Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by Julian Finney - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images Timing is everything... Apparently there was more than meets the eye with Bayern Munich starting Jamal Musiala on the bench during the team’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Champions League.According to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Michel Schröer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Musiala is battling a hip injury, which could affect his status against Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend: Jamal Musiala had a hip problem against Leverkusen and Bayern were concerned he would aggravate his injury had he started against Aston Villa last night - especially with Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Barcelona and Germany games coming up. Musiala is receiving intensive treatment to get fit for Sunday’s game against Frankfurt. For what it is worth, Musiala’s hip looked fine vs. Aston Villa. However, Bayern Munich does not want this to become a lingering issue that could nag Musiala all season. If he is not 100%, it would not be shocking to see Musiala sit out. If he is good enough to go, though, his presence will be welcomed against a tough Eintracht Frankfurt side. Borussia Mönchengladbach v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Christian Verheyen/Borussia Moenchengladbach via Getty Images No, he’s not pointing at you. Germany is currently seeing a complete transformation in its squad, players are coming in and going out, and by the end of the season, fans are set to see a completely new squad. The national team’s latest addition comes after Niclas Füllkrug, the regular choice for striker under former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, was reported to be struggling with an Achilles tendon problem. Prior to the official roster drop, reports (from Christian Falk, via @iMiaSanMia) indicated that Nagelsmann was set to call up a new striker — Tim Kleindienst. The striker from Borussia Mönchengladbach will don the German trikot for the first time, this being the first call up he has received to the national team. Kleindienst is meant to replace Füllkrug, who is probably just temporarily out until the West Ham United forward recovers fully. The question is, will he be able to fill the order Füllkrug leaves behind? What do you think? Let us know!

Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 The coach is getting backing from the Bayern Munich execs... Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen took the opportunity to praise head coach Vincent Kompany in the locker room after the team dropped a 1-0 decision to Aston Villa in the Champions League. “Vincent, we are certain that with your style of play, your speeches, your communication with the players, you’ve given us a lot of joy in the past few games. You will bring us joy again. We are happy that you are with us. The way we are playing football again makes us very happy. We can feel that the team is having fun. We have to look ahead to the important game against Frankfurt. We will certainly give it our all. Hopefully we will show the performance that we have shown in recent weeks,” Dreesen told the team per Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). The support was likely welcomed during a tough time. FBL-EUR-C1-DORTMUND-CELTIC Photo by INA FASSBENDER/AFP via Getty Images The young Dortmund star is well overdue for his chance. After a disappointing 2023/2024 season with Borussia Dortmund, in terms of individual performance, Karim Adeyemi has been a star this season. In the Bundesliga and more recently, the Champions League, the German winger has been scoring for fun with a hattrick in the first half of Tuesday’s fixture before being subbed off early in the second half.Adeyemi picked up a knock in that match and many believed he would not receive a call-up to the national team for that reason. However, after hearing Nagelsmann’s comments it would appear that the coach didn’t have plans for the Dortmund star regardless.“Karim Adeyemi got injured (Tuesday), but he’s been in great form and is certainly a candidate for us in the future. He’s currently a very important factor for the U-21s in these important games. For us, he may not have had a starting role. Of course the players want to play for the senior team, but presenting yourself through good performances with the U-21 is also recommendable for every player,” Nagelsmann explained (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).By reading through the lines, it seems as though Adeyemi is not yet ready to make the step to the senior squad. With recent performances, it is hard to argue that Chris Führich would be a better player.Adeyemi’s performances almost warrant a starting position, but he will certainly need to be more consistent to become a mainstay with the senior team. For now, it appears as though he has a good attitude and is willing to play in the youth squads, something that not all players are doing. With older players like Kleindienst stepping in, young stars like Paul Wanner, Adeyemi, and Youssoufa Moukoko might be increasingly frustrated to sit out on the fun. It seems as though Nagelsmann has been clear on form over big names, but when the big names are in form, they should be called up.Looking for some thoughts on the big Bayern Munich match against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga? Netherlands v Germany - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images The Bundestrainer has changed his squad up a bit, and here’s what he has to say about it. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has been tasked with building a new generation for the national team, one that will carry on the success of EURO 2024 to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and possibly EURO 2028. His first squad after the Euros was more or less the same squad he took to the tournament, with the only real changes being the absences of the retired Toni Kroos, İlkay Gündoğan, Thomas Müller, and Manuel Neuer. This time, however, he seems to be getting the transition ball rolling, with a couple of notable changes. Most notably, Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry has returned to the national team after a long hiatus. Nagelsmann announced that his selection of Gnabry was the result of his successful comeback from injury and promising(?) start to the season. “Serge had a tough year with a lot of injuries. He’s now managed to stabilize himself physically. Also from a performance point of view, he’s had many good games in pre-season and also during the start of the season in the Bundesliga and Champions League,” said Nagelsmann. “He’s not exactly a new face with the national team, but he’s not been with us for a long time and unfortunately missed the EUROs. We’re looking forward to having him back and being able to count on his qualities.”Probably the biggest issue with this Germany squad was the goalkeeper position, with new No. 1 Marc-André ter Stegen dropped due to a severe knee injury. The callups of squad regulars Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann and Stuttgart/Bayern’s Alexander Nübel were expected, but the third name on the list was a surprise: Janis Blaswich of Red Bull Salzburg, formerly of RB Leipzig.“Oli [Baumann] and Alex [Nübel] have already been with us and did well. Oli, in particular, had a great start to the season in the league and the Europa League,” said Nagelsmann. “He deserves to get game time and he will get that. I’m still not 100% sure how the distribution of game time will be, whether one will play two games or one game for each.” Nagelsmann thus avoided commitment to one particular goalkeeper at the moment, but that is of course subject to change once the international break arrives. As for his Blaswich pick, Nagelsmann said: “Janis is also there, he’s the starting goalkeeper for Salzburg and playing in the Champions League. He’s a good guy, we need someone who keeps the group together in that #3 role. There are of course other candidates who can convince with good performances in the coming weeks.”Interestingly enough, Nagelsmann’s final immediate comments on the squad were not about any other players, not even about newcomer Tim Kleindienst of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Rather, they were about Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, who Nagelsmann has not yet selected for the national team as of now. Adeyemi spent the last international break with the U-21 national team, but is currently injured.“Karim Adeyemi got injured yesterday, but he’s been in great form and is certainly a candidate for us in the future. He’s currently a very important factor for the U21s in these important games. For us, he may not have had a starting role,” said Nagelsmann. “Of course the players want to play for the senior team, but presenting yourself through good performances with the U21 is also recommendable for every player.”It is definitely too early to say whether Adeyemi has a decent shot at the national team, especially in light of his recent injury. That said, with the good form he has shown for Dortmund in recent months, there is no reason why Nagelsmann would not consider him should he keep said form up.Germany will visit Bosnia-Herzegovina on the 11th of October, and play their return leg against the Netherlands three days later. The Netherlands game will be held at Bayern Munich’s own Allianz Arena.Looking for a recap of the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and…

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is no stranger to giving Bayern Munich headaches and he did so once again in the Champions League, as he watched his team execute his game plan perfectly for a 1-0 victory. Needless to say, the manager was ecstatic. ”I’m very happy, very proud. We want to play at this level — and continue to play consistently against teams like Bayern Munich. Of course we want to enjoy the Champions League like we do and play like we do. And we were very focused on the game. They challenged us for 90 minutes. We made some changes in defence. We tried to keep the ball, but they put us under pressure. It wasn’t easy. We didn’t have much, but then we fought and won,” Emery said (as captured by FCBayern.com).Some will say that Emery provided the blueprint on how to slow down that dangerous Bayern Munich attack, but Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso probably beat him to the punch last week during the 1-1 draw between Bayern Munich and Die Werkself. Regardless, other teams will study the tactics used, but it will be up to them to implement the strategies just as successfully as Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa. Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern Munich - UEFA Champions League Photo by Neal Simpson/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images The coach is not worried about Harry Kane getting back on track... Bayern Munich struggled to get much going offensively against Aston Villa during its 1-0 loss in the Champions League. One of the reasons why Bayern Munich could not score goals was because it had to deal with Aston Villa’s compact defensive shape. In particular, that seemed to affect Harry Kane’s ability to get shots off. When asked about getting Kane more involved in the attack, head coach Vincent Kompany did not seem all that concerned about it.“For me the priority is that we create chances as a team, and I think we did that today. Harry has scored 11 goals this season - there are always moments like this. He will score goals again very soon,” Kompany remarked (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Kane has been productive this season, but the last two matches — against markedly better opponents than the ones Bayern Munich had faced earlier — have created issues for the Bayern Munich attack. Can the Bavarians find a way to get Kane going against what will surely be a fleet of buses to be parked on the pitch over the course of the rest of the season?Looking for a recap of the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Aston Villa, along with some additional thoughts and analysis? Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern Munchen - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by James Baylis - AMA/Getty Images Bayern’s attack went stale against Villa’s parked bus. For the second match in a row, Bayern Munich faced a formidable opponent who sat deep in defense to narrow down Bayern’s attacking spaces. The approach worked as Aston Villa kept the clean sheet behind seven saves from Emiliano Martínez.Until this week, Bayern’s high-flying offense flourished under Vincent Kompany. There has been creativity on the ball and constant movement off the ball. But against Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa, both of those attributes vanished.“In the first half, we had control for 15 or 20 minutes without being able to push them back much,” said Bayern director of sport Max Eberl (via @iMiaSanMia). “We weren’t 100% active off the ball today. In the second half, we did better without creating any great scoring chances. We were more active. The goal we conceded wasn’t really a scoring chance. After we went behind, we reacted and had two more chances through Serge [Gnabry] and Harry [Kane]. You mustn’t lose the game. We have to learn from it because we can’t win at this level without giving 100%. We didn’t manage to take advantage of our few chances. We knew that the stakes were high here.”Eberl is absolutely correct in his analysis. Given the possession differential, Bayern must figure out a way to create meaningful chances and be clinical in finishing those chances.Looking for a recap of the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Aston Villa, along with some additional thoughts and analysis? Bayer 04 Leverkusen v AC Milan - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by Alexander Scheuber - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images A Sunday match? Ugh... Competition for Wirtz rounding into shape (ESPN)If Bayern Munich is going to take a run at Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, it will likely have to do battle with Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Arsenal FC. While financially it will be tough to compete, Wirtz does not appear to be — at this stage — all that eager to leave Germany. Regardless, he will have options: Real Madrid, Manchester City and Arsenal have a “good chance” of signing Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz next summer, SPORT BILD reports. The German outlet also reports that Barcelona are out of the running in the race to sign Wirtz, who could cost as much as €150m.Bayern Munich remain interested in the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who will only go to a club that has a realistic chance of winning the UEFA Champions League. More than ever, it feels like Wirtz is going to seriously consider a move to Bayern Munich — whether the club has a dire need for an attacking midfielder or not. It is clear that Bayern Munich wants him badly, Germany wants to keep him close by, and just about everyone wants to see him emerge as a bonafide star for both club and country. Wirtz is on his way to doing that, but will he be able to resist the money and opportunities presented by Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Arsenal?Chelsea never had interest in Vlahović (Fabrizio Romano via 90Min.com)Contrary to reports, Chelsea FC did not have interest in Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović during the summer:Chelsea did not consider making a move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic over the summer, despite reports claiming the contrary.Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 12 (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich’s scorching start has hit a little bit of a bump in the road, so this weekend’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt figures to be an important one. It is not easy to live under the long shadow of Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer, a literal and figurative giant in goalkeeping.Yet that has been the lot of FC Barcelona keeper Marc-André ter Stegen on the national team stage. And after just one international period since Neuer’s international retirement, Ter Stegen has found himself on the receiving end of a horrific injury that has taken him out for the remainder of the season.Neuer, 38, is not about to make his comeback…for the October international period at least. Per a report from Az journalist Maximilian Koch, however, the door does not look completely closed for the future. As captured via @iMiaSanMia:A Manuel Neuer comeback to the national team for October’s games is not an option, but is not completely ruled out for the future. Bayern Munich traveled to England planning to earn three more points in the Champions League, but Aston Villa had other plans. Unai Emery’s side produced a masterclass in team defense, working together as a unit to deliver an unlikely shutout. Bayern’s leading scorer, Harry Kane, did not produce a single shot until the last minute of the match. Kane’s header was deflected away by Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.‘We dominated for large spells,” Harry Kane told CBS Sports Golazo after the match (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We had chances. Their keeper had an amazing game. Sometimes you have nights like this. The most important thing from our point of view is not to panic.”With Jamal Musiala spending the first half on the bench, the entire offense had an off night. Serge Gnabry found himself in good positions but failed to truly challenge Martínez. Aston Villa FC v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Bayern Munich struggled with Aston Villa... Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich could only lament his team’s unlucky performance during a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Champions League.“We didn’t play our game 100%, made a few too many mistakes and weren’t quite as keen on the second balls as we have been in recent weeks. We had a few chances going forward, even if not everything was perfect. Even if there weren’t that many, some of them were clear cut chances. It’s always difficult to create chances against an opponent that sits deep. We had a good chance by Serge in the first half and another chance by Harry at the end. There were definitely situations that could have led to goals,” said Kimmich (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). As for the goal that was conceded, Kimmich said that it was not on goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, whose swashbuckling style probably stopped other chances earlier in the match. “It was our own set piece, we were perhaps a bit too far away. Manu generally stands a bit high - he stopped us from conceding a big chance in the first half by doing so. We often benefit from Manu standing high, so we don’t blame him for that at all,” said Kimmich. FC Bayern München Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images That is certainly one way to put it... Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany did not seem like a man altogether concerned with his team’s first loss of the season — a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Champions League, “It’s a bitter defeat, but the Champions League wasn’t decided today. We have to keep going and get back to winning ways,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “When it comes to winning or losing, you don’t need the context of so many years. Every game has its own story. We had big chances and didn’t take them. We gave away a moment, and in that moment Villa scored a goal. I’m convinced that we’re a team that will score goals more often than not. But today that’s the story of the game.”When Kompany subbed in Joao Palhinha, some viewed it as a concession that Bayern Munich was going to play for a draw given its attacking struggles. Kompany insisted that was not the case. “I always want to win. I haven’t thought for a second about taking the 0-0. It was just that we played two big games in a row against Leverkusen and Aston Villa, and we have a squad that we want to use. In our opinion it was the right time to bring fresh legs into the team. That’s all it was about,” said Kompany. Overall, Kompany just wants to see his team shake the loss off and focus on improving things moving forward. “Leverkusen and Villa are two teams that I rate extremely highly. We conceded very few chances against them. What we usually do so well, which is scoring goals, for some reason or the other - it’s been on the bar, on the post, a near miss. With the team we have, I’d never see this as a trend. It’s just what happened to us this week. If we focus on our work, we’ll still win a lot of games,” said Kompany. Die Folgen: Bayern’s 1-0 loss to Villa (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich did not look like the juggernaut we had seen in late August and early September. In fact, the team looked far from that. Lacking energy and solutions to Aston Villa’s low block, Bayern Munich meandered through another game where it looked like it just could not figure out how to complete the task of getting a win. Only in this match, the Bavarians ended up taking a loss due to a defensive breakdown. Whatever the case, this game left us lots to discuss, so let’s get to it: As always, let’s start with Vincent Kompany starting XI: STARTING XI
Here's today's CHAMPIONS LEAGUE lineup as we take on Aston Villa! ✨#AVLFCB pic.twitter.com/kCR8VvKtNw— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) October 2, 2024So, a few surprises. Jamal Musiala took a seat so Kingsley Coman could join the starting lineup. Konrad Laimer slotted in at right-back, which put Raphaël Guerreiro on the bench, while João Palhinha and Leroy Sané were still on the outside looking in. Thomas Muller might never start again (half joking). Rotation is a great thing, but this felt a little arrogant (and maybe even disrespectful to Aston Villa). Bayern Munich looked completely disjointed early on to the point where Aston Villa asserted itself more in the match despite having far less possession through the first 25 minutes. That helped Dayot Upamecano pick up a needless yellow card and a goal from Pau Torres that was ultimately ruled to be offside. Upamecano would have his hands full with Ollie Watkins. Just minutes after the disallowed goal, Aston Villa had another quality chance, but the shot was right at Manuel Neuer. In the 29th minute, Serge Gnabry streaked down the right side for Bayern Munich’s best chance of the match, but instead of sending the ball centrally to Kane, Gnabry airmailed a shot, which made him look extremely selfish or unaware or both. Kane then verbally berated Gnabry, who was unfazed. This was reminiscent of Julian Nagelsmann’s first year when Gnabry, Coman, Sané, and Musiala would routinely shrug off Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich attack missed having a true playmaker. Without Musiala or Müller, the profiles on the field all operated too similarly. Coman was a complete and utter non-factor. It is hard to tell why he is playing so much, but he is not putting out good scouting film if the intention is to showcase himself for a transfer. The squad seemed to lack energy and urgency in the first half. Leon Bailey, who came on as a sub in the first half for Jacob Ramsey, still has a propensity for forcing things. Bailey was later subbed off after showing no burst and a penchant for poor decisions. Bailey had 13 touches and lost possession six times. He might have been playing hurt.On the brightside, Bayern Munich’s press was effective and when the squad was able to set up its defensive shape, it was formidable. Still, you just got the feeling that leaving the backline was going to end up being trouble. Seeing the same thing that many of us did, Kompany subbed in Musiala for Coman at halftime, who probably needs a change of scenery and some time on the bench. Upamecano was really playing with fire while on a yellow card. Unai Emery seemed to get into it with Bayern Munich coaching staff a bit in the second half, which helped amp things up. Meanwhile, the game had devolved into sloppiness for both sides. Aston Villa was compact and very much playing a “bend, but don’t break” style, which did not afford Bayern Munich many great chances. While Aston Villa did not generate many good chances of its own, the book might be out on how to frustrate Bayern Munich’s attack. Musiala definitely added a jolt to the attacking group, despite ho-hum performances by just about everyone else. Ross Barkley was awful for Aston Villa by the way. In the 79th minute, though, Aston…
