The less said about the center backs the better, but Vincent Kompany tripped and fell during his first real tests as Bayern coach. It speaks volumes on what’s happening at the club.Bayern might still be top of the Bundesliga, but soon they won’t be with that kind of defending. After three games without a win, Vincent Kompany’s meteoric rise at the Bavarian capital has come to a standstill. Bayern Munich lined up against second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt with the opportunity to go 2 points clear atop the Bundesliga before the international break. FC Hollywood had other plans, as they faltered to a 3-3 draw courtesy of another inspiring Omar Marmoush performance for Frankfurt. Here are some observations from the game.The quality of football from both teams was poorNow, first of all, credit where credit is due — Eintracht Frankfurt had a solid game plan. Dino Toppmöller knew exactly what his team was getting into and set them up to defend in a 4-4-2 out-of-position and play on the counter. While their counterplay was extremely quick, and lethal, and brilliantly utilized the clear chemistry between Marmoush and Hugo Ekitike; their low block was caught off guard far too often and very prone to errors. Frankfurt could have avoided all three goals they conceded tonight if they were better structured and transitioned into their defensive shape better consistently. Bayern were able to create chaos in the opposition box and Frankfurt simply couldn't cope with it. On to Bayern — it was tragic. Defensively, you cannot defend that high up the pitch. It is bound to end in total disaster, especially against two quick forwards who have done this exact drill a thousand times. Going forward it seemed like a Hail Mary in the box far too often. There were some good sequences (especially the one that culminated in Micheal Olise’s goal), but there was a lack of clear attacking direction and forwards in the right places. The point here is, that a superior team would've avoided all the mistakes Frankfurt made defensively and won comfortably — it seems far too easy to trouble Bayern these days.Palhinha being benched was a total disasterIf not these games then which games? João Palhinha would have solved every problem Bayern had tonight. Not only would a real defensive midfielder have stopped Frankfurt’s quick turnarounds in their very tracks (imagine Palhinha in place of Aleksandar Pavlović in the lead-up to Frankfurt’s first goal), but even simply an added man in the back would give Bayern a numerical advantage (3 to 2) against Frankfurt’s two devasting forwards.Fans have every right to question the Palhinha transfer at this moment. Why was he signed if the coach is simply reluctant to use him? Even at halftime when the problem was clearly evident, Kompany opted to continue and only sub Palhinha on right before stoppage time. Palhinha is built for these difficult games against counterattacking teams but there is no use in buying a defensive midfielder if the club is against using him even when the game is crying out his name. Bayern waited four years to sign a DM only for one to be signed and never used. A total head-scratching moment from Kompany — who had some very questionable lineup choices, tactics, and substitutions today. Individual performancesThomas Müller had a weird game. He did well for the most part and capped off the performance with a wonderful assist to the opening goal but there were some instances one couldn’t help but simply wonder what he was doing there. All the right ideas, most of the wrong executions. Maybe he should get a little more game time in the future because he does add a fresh vision to the team.If you couldn't find Harry Kane in the first half, it wasn't your fault. Kane redeemed himself with a class assist to Olise, but you just expect more from him in games like these. Not his best week.Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman both had mediocre performances with a few bright spots. Nothing extraordinary and far below expectations as this was a game where wingers could excel and the team could utilize width (especially in the first half) to escape Frankfurt suffocating the Bayern forwards in the box — yet neither provided any meaningful output.Joshua Kimmich and Pavlović will have to take a look at themselves defensively (another cry out loud…

After the devastating loss to Spain in EURO 2024, Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer retired from international play after an illustrious career, including the 2014 World Cup trophy. Longtime Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was immediately tabbed as Neuer’s successor and started both UEFA Nations League matches in September.Unfortunately, ter Stegen is out for the season with a knee injury. After a decade of stability between the posts, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has to find another replacement.According to a report from Kicker (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Nagelsmann has moved quickly and made his choice for next Friday’s Nations League match against Bosnia.Oliver Baumann is ahead of Alexander Nübel and could start both games this month. Baumann will definitely start the first game against Bosnia, while Julian Nagelsmann has not made a final decision yet on who starts against The Netherlands [@kicker] Baumann has been a stalwart at Hoffenheim for the past decade while Bayern loanee Nübel has spent the past few years at Monaco and Stuttgart. Baumann has certainly paid his dues for Germany to earn the first crack at the job, but Nagelsmann has a variety of options if it doesn’t work out. This midweek it was another winner for the bright attacking midfielder, who bagged an 83rd minute goal in Heidenheim’s 2-1 Europa Conference League victory over Olimpija.But Wanner’s international future still hangs in the balance.It looks like Wanner is holding out some hope still for a Germany call-up under Julian Nagelsmann. But that did not happen in time for EURO 2024 and Austria stands at the ready to swoop in on the 18-year-old talent.Sport1 had a recent report detailing the situation. As captured by @iMiaSanMia:Paul Wanner’s national team decision depends on his big dream, the 2026 World Cup. If the DFB can show him this perspective and agree to it, Wanner will opt for the German national team. If not, things would look bad for the DFB. However, if the Bavarians truly (and there is a lot of doubt about on how true this report is) want De Jong, they will have to outduel Manchester United and Chelsea FC: Paris Saint-Germain are no strangers to taking away a player from FC Barcelona and now the capital club could be eyeing another player heading into the summer of 2025.Over the three years, the Parisians have made vital signings to bolster their midfield, bringing in the likes of Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, and João Neves coming into the fold. However, could another midfielder be on the way?SPORT reports that de Jong is focused on making his time in Barcelona a success. Although Manchester United, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich have all shown interest in him, PSG are also monitoring his situation closely. However, his main priority is to continue at Barça.It seems like every year, there are de Jong rumors linking him away from Barcelona, but nothing occurs. Nonetheless, with his contract expiring in 2026, the Catalan side will need to decide whether to extend it or sell him next summer and secure a sum.The Dutchman joined Barcelona in 2019, making 214 total appearances, scoring 17 goals, and registering 21 assists. The former Ajax man has also won one LaLiga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa de España.As for how much the player will cost PSG should they pursue him, Transfermarkt puts de Jong’s value at €70 million.At this point, it seems really unlikely that Bayern Munich would be in pursuit of De Jong. Bayern Munich once again found a way to drop points, only this time it was somehow more painful than usual. Let’s take a look at who stood out…Jersey Swap: Omar MarmoushThe Egyptian forward proved again just why he should be among the top names in the Bundesliga. Marmoush has continued building upon a strong season last year, and gave Bayern Munich serious problems on the counter attack. To top it all off, his brilliant finish was a heartbreaking goal to give Frankfurt a point. Marmoush will certainly be on the radar for top club’s next season.Der Kaiser: Alphonso DaviesDavies has never fully gotten back in his groove, since that memorable Champions League run, but today he showed some great tackles and a well-rounded performance. The rest of the backline had poor showings, despite scoring the majority of Bayern’s goals on the night.Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichWhile Aleksandar Pavlović saw a step back in his form, Kimmich emerged as the heart of the midfield once again. Kimmich thrived in the center of the park and rightly earned the award.Der Bomber: Thomas MüllerThe German veteran gave it his all, as always. Müller disrupted the opposition box as always and was a big part of Bayern’s first two goals. No one stood out too much on offense, as Müller also didn’t have a perfect game. He almost stole the show with a last gasp winner, but was just saved.Meister of the Match: Michael OliseOlise put together a great performance against Eintracht Frankfurt and showed no lack of confidence, putting lots of attempts at the Frankfurt goal. Jamal Musiala has consistently shown major improvements in his game, mentality, and maturity both on and off the pitch. It is one of the qualities Bayern Munich sees in the young star, and it stems from Musiala being able to identify his own goals. The German superstar has set clear goals for himself this season, showing his dedication to growth. “I always want to be better than in the previous season,” Musiala said in an interview earlier this month for WELT AM SONNTAG (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “There is still room for improvement. That’s crucial in football.” Musiala aims to get into better scoring positions, something that “worked well at the Euros.” Reflecting on a recent Bayern match, he notes how pleased he was to score an “easy goal” against Wolfsburg by being “in exactly the right position to score.”Musiala also discussed how his role at Bayern has evolved in the interview. While he once said, “No dribbling in your own half,” he explains that this “doesn’t always apply” anymore, particularly now that he’s often positioned deeper in build-up play. “You can and must dribble to start attacks and draw an opponent out,” he explains, highlighting his ability to read the game and adapt to various tactical situations. “I do what the situation requires.”Interestingly, Vincent Kompany’s tactics at Burnley also featured players being deployed in unconventional roles, with midfielders dropping deeper or pushing higher up the field, just like Musiala’s evolving role at Bayern. It is only early days for Vincent Kompany and Bayern Munich, but there can be no denying how well the Belgian manager has the team playing at the moment. Coming off of a season without silverware, Kompany recently explained that he can constantly sense the hunger that’s within the squad — a hunger that is only bolstered by the disappointing previous season where they were ever so close to reaching a Champions League final. “We all have a lot of personal reasons to be very motivated this season. Having experienced it myself as a player, also as a coach, when you have a winning team, sometimes the year after they’ve been hurt is the best year to pick it up with them. The team is hungry. The club is hungry. I’m hungry. We have to show it on the pitch, of course,” Kompany said (via @iMiaSanMia). From the outside looking in, there is also perhaps an element of satisfaction amongst the Bayern fanbase and pundits alike for how Kompany has this team currently playing combined with the unexpected nature of him having gotten the Bayern job to replace Tuchel. It is an open secret that Bayern had pursued several other options before landing on Kompany, though the club’s front office maintains that the Belgian was always a name on the short list of candidates to replace the former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz boss.
