Germany Training And Press Conference Photo by Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty Images The sky may just be the limit for the former Bayern Munich striker and Julian Nagelsmann’s right-hand man. Former Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner is enjoying a good spell as Julian Nagelsmann’s assistant coach with the Germany men’s national team.So good, in fact, that his name keeps coming up in rumors about head coaching jobs at club level. But Wagner — who was current FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski’s deputy before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, but could not break into the senior national team for big tournaments — is not thinking about that. For now.“These are things I have to ignore,” Wagner said in recent comments captured by Sky Sport DE (via @iMiaSanMia). “Of course you often have contacts here and there or talk to one person or another. But right now I have a great job that I’m enjoying. I’m not thinking too far into the future. I’m a young coach who wants to develop and I’m in a very good place right now with really great people.”Wagner and Nagelsmann enjoyed an impressive, redemptive display for Germany at EURO 2024 and look set to be on hand once again at the next major tournament — the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup taking place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. After that, who knows?

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BREMEN-BAYERN MUNICH Photo by AXEL HEIMKEN/AFP via Getty Images The campaign to keep the German national team captain in Bavaria is well under way. Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is one of a number of the club’s stars with a soon-to-expire contract. As a leader for club and country, though, Kimmich is surely going to be one of the Bavarians’ top priorities to keep rather than depart on a free transfer next June. Board member for sport Max Eberl already named him as future Bayern captain material — and club president Herbert Hainer is in full agreement.“Why not? He’s already captain of the national team and the role suits him very well,” Hainer said in an Az interview published at the end of September (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We will of course try [to keep Kimmich at Bayern]. Jo knows exactly how much we appreciate him, what we have in him, and we’re telling him that again and again. I think he feels very, very comfortable at Bayern. He plays brilliantly, always makes progress, and in that respect I wish him nothing else than to end his career at FC Bayern one day.”Could Kimmich follow in the footsteps of long-tenured Bayern greats Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller? Why not? He has already followed them into the captaincy ranks. Whatever the case, the club at least seems to be doing its part to make sure Kimmich continues to feel welcome.

Eintracht Frankfurt v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images No blood, no foul... After Bayern Munich’s 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, Thomas Müller was asked about the series of plays that led to the game-tying goal. In describing the action, the veteran spoke honestly, which came across as critical toward Joshua Kimmich to some observers.“It was a free kick - played short. The ball comes back and then Jo dribbles a bit into the tight space. You could say that’s not exactly what we want. As tight as it gets then, we actually want to play out from the side again,” Müller on DAZN (as captured by Bild). Bild broke the sequence of plays down like this: What the fan favorite means: Before the goal was conceded, Kimmich had played a free kick from the left half of the field to Kingsley Coman (28) on the sideline. Under pressure from the opposition, the Frenchman played the ball back to Kimmich, who then left his position as number six and played a bad pass on the crowded left wing.According to Müller, this is an action that Kompany’s Bayern team does not want. Apparently, the internal instruction in such situations is to move the ball away from the zone in which the opponents are pressing.Kimmich, of course, saw the critique, but was unfazed. “It’s always important that we deal with each other openly and honestly, and that’s how Thomas is. It’s not the case that my ball loss led to a direct goal. But in general, you can always make different decisions on the football pitch. It’s always about making decisions. Sometimes you make good ones and sometimes bad ones,” Kimmich told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).Water under the bridge and all of that...Looking to catch up on all of the weekend’s action from Germany’s top flight? Jürgen Klopp receives Order of Merit Photo by Bernd Weißbrod/picture alliance via Getty Images He ran out of energy? Now he grows his wiiings Jürgen Klopp has only been out of work for less than three months since he left at the end of his Liverpool FC contract and he’s been linked to various coaching gigs, including Bayern Munich after Thomas Tuchel left. It hasn’t taken the former Borussia Dortmund coach long to find a new job: Red Bull Football Group’s Global Head of Football.Klopp will begin his new role at the start of next year as per Sky Sports Germany journo Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) and he has already signed a long-term deal. His job will be advising all Red Bull teams (Leipzig, Salzburg, New York, etc.) on coaching matters, playing philosophy, development and transfers of talents/head coaches and more. Oliver Mintzlaff, RB’s managing director, was determined to get Klopp. The interesting part of this deal is that the 57-year-old German secured an exit clause in his contract that will allow him to take over the German national football team should current manager Julian Nagelsmann vacate the post for any reason. This is a huge step for Red Bull’s football clubs, and it will be interesting to see how Klopp influences their teams.Looking to catch up on all of the weekend’s action from Germany’s top flight? He could have waited for his chance to break into the first team but decided to entertain offers from different clubs, ultimately choosing to sign for Bayern Munich.“A big club with such a huge history as Bayern cannot be turned down,” Aznou declared (via @Lions_talk). “They offered me an attractive project, and coming from a humble family, they helped me financially. Therefore, I chose Bayern.” He doubled down on that when asked if he would’ve stayed at Barca instead and got first-team minutes (like Alejandro Balde). Jamal Musiala also joined Bayern from Chelsea FC aged 16.Lamine Yamal, a key player for Barca, opted to represent Spain instead of Morocco. Yamal and Aznou are known to be close friends, hinting at the former trying to get the latter to choose Spain: “Lamine and I have spent many years together, and we’ve always had a close relationship. We enjoyed ourselves both on and off the field. Well, he made a decision to represent Spain, and I always supported him just as he supported my decision.”

Bayer 04 Leverkusen v Holstein Kiel - Bundesliga Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty Images Will Bayern Munich be able to get Florian Wirtz this summer? Bayern takes lead over Madrid on Wirtz (Madrid Universal)The noise is getting a bit louder surrounding a move to Bayern Munich for Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz. Reports are emerging that the Bavarians are the frontrunner in the sweepstakes: Bayern Munich have emerged as the frontrunner in the pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen standout attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, according to Sky Germany, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo. The 21-year-old German international, who is also a top target for Real Madrid for 2025, looks set to become one of the most sought-after players in next summer’s transfer window. Despite having a contract with Leverkusen until 2027, Wirtz is widely expected to make a move at the end of this season. The attacking midfielder’s stock has risen dramatically since his breakthrough in 2022, with his reputation further enhanced after playing a pivotal role in Xabi Alonso’s historic double-winning side that claimed both the Bundesliga and German Cup last season.Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are said to be leading the chase for his signature, though the Bavarian giants appear to have made the first concrete move. Indeed, as per the report, initial contact has already been established between Bayern’s hierarchy and Wirtz’s representatives.Sources suggest that Wirtz’s long-term career plan involves remaining in the Bundesliga for a few more years before considering a move abroad. This strategy could give Bayern Munich a significant advantage over Real Madrid, who have made the German sensation a top target for the 2025 summer window. This development will come as a significant concern for Los Blancos, who were reportedly very confident of their chances of landing Wirtz next year despite the intense competition for his services. That Real Madrid are also targeting a move for Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso adds another layer of intrigue to the developing transfer saga, as it could be a decisive factor. Bayer Leverkusen are expected to demand a fee of around €80 million or higher for their star player in case of a potential sale in the summer.More than ever, it does feel like Wirtz will make the jump to Bayern Munich during the summer. How much Bayern Munich has to pay for him (fee + salary) remains to be seen, but it will be steep. Madrid extends Carvajal despite ACL tear (ESPN)Real Madrid extended the contract of Dani Carvajal despite the defender tearing his ACL:Just hours after Real Madrid announced that Dani Carvajal had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture, Los Blancos have extended his contract.Carvajal, who will turn 33 in January, is expected to be out for the rest of the season — with his previous deal then expiring in June. But Real Madrid issued a statement on Sunday which said his contract had been extended to 2026 and, as a club, “would like to show him all its support and affection and wishes him a speedy recovery so that we can enjoy his football on the pitch again as soon as possible.”The statement added: “He has been part of the first team since 2013, and in his 12 seasons defending our shirt, he has become a legend of Real Madrid and world football.”Bavarian Podcast Works — The Bundesliga Rundown with Marcus Iredahl: Matchday 6 (Bavarian Football Works)As the Bundesliga heads into another early international break, things are starting to take shape. FC Bayern München Press Conference For Public Charging Park For Commercial Vehicles At Allianz Arena Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images We’ll eventually get the hang of it The Champions League and Club World Cup have shaken things up by adopting a different format to the ones that we football fans are already used. Both of which have their drawbacks, but Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is still getting used to the new UCL format.“I’m convinced of the new format. But admittedly, I also have to get used to two points: the league phase against eight different opponents without return games,” Dreesen quipped (Sport Bild as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “And that the draw for the round of 16, for which we of course want to qualify directly, determines the entire tournament brackets. Hertha BSC v Bayern Muenchen - 1 Bundesliga Photo by City-Press via Getty Images Pep is not a fan of this single league phase malarkey Former Bayern, FC Barcelona, and current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wasn’t a fan of the new format, who was quoted as saying: There will be more injuries. Uefa knows it, they don’t care at all”. The Bayern executive, however, sees it differently: “I’m sure that Pep is not planning to go into the playoffs with Manchester City, but to qualify directly for the round of 16, it takes a total of 15 games, which is exactly two more than in the old format. The Premier League with 20 clubs means four more games than in the Bundesliga. We have one cup, the English teams have two. So the overall workload is higher for them.”

FC St. Pauli v SV Elversberg - Second Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images They are putting their fate in the hands of their fans... When a small club from the city of Hamburg struggles their way up to the Bundesliga, the huge financial disparities in the league make it hard to become competitive enough to stay up. Management at the politically left football club are trying a new and innovative tactic to raise capital to invest in the team and lower expenses. As reported in The Athletic and other sources they are selling their stadium to their fans. St Pauli is a unique club in their intensity of their commitment to left wing and social responsibility values. This has somewhat handcuffed them in terms on easy ways to raise revenue. They will not take commercial revenue from gambling companies or other companies that they do not believe promote their values (compare this to say Dortmund who recently took on an arms manufacturer as a major sponsor much to the chagrin of many of their fans). Unlike the Premier League where promotion from the Championship delivers a team something in the ballpark of 180 million euros, the Bundesliga offers no such instant revenue. This means that St. Pauli’s wage bill is about 4% of Bayern’ and barely 10% of Leipzig’s. So if the side is to escape eternal minnow status they have to get creative. And this they have done. The team is transferring ownership of its stadium, Millerntor-Stadion, to a co-operative and is now selling shares in that co-operative. While the exact number of shares being sold is not clear it is known that they will be selling a controlling interest in the stadium. If you have some spare cash lying around and want to get in on the deal the cost is about 850 euros per share. There is no cap on how many shares any one person may buy, but in true St. Pauli fashion each owner will only be entitled to one vote no matter how many shares they own. They also plan to screen share purchasers to make sure they have the interests of the club at part. An owner may sell their share in the future, but only for the price they paid for it. Once the restructure is completed then the club will still receive all match day revenues, but the new co-operative will set the rent that the club will have to pay to use the stadium. With the ownership comprised of fans it is expected that the rent will be friendly, and will be adjusted downward if the club is relegated or otherwise struggles. The co-operative management will also be expected to raise other revenue sources (concerts, fairs, etc) for the stadium to use to keep rent for the club reasonable.Even in a league governed by the 50+1 rule this is a bold step. But St. Pauli’s management is betting that their fans will step up to help the team to the tune of tens of millions of euros. Based on their history and the emotional commitment of their fans that looks like a good risk.

Nottingham Forest FC v Fulham FC - Premier League Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images A golden opportunity has slipped through your hands Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer’s retirement and a long-term injury to FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen means the German men’s national team are without a starting goalkeeper. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann invited Bernd Leno from Fulham but the former Arsenal FC man turned him down. What gives?“They told me I would be there, but that I wouldn’t get a game. That’s why I decided to train in London”, Leno told Bild (via Get German Football News). “Julian knows that I’m always there when they need me and that I can really help the team. But at 32, I’m no longer a newcomer. I’ve never put demands on Manuel and Marc, I’ve always delivered and never made jokes.”Despite that announcement, the former Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper still aims for a return to the NT. Nevertheless, Janis Blaswich from RB Leipzig was chosen to join Oliver Baumann (TSG Hoffenheim) and Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart, on loan from Bayern) as the goalkeeper pool for Die Mannschaft in their upcoming games.

Bayern Munich - FC Schalke 04 Photo by Matthias Balk/picture alliance via Getty Images When did it matter more to run an extra 6km as a team than come away with all three points? This is professional football — not a marathon. Despite the last three games, Bayern Munich is having a fairly good start to the season. There is no crisis at Bayern, far from it. But these last three games showed fans that the club is still vulnerable to losing and drawing games they are very capable of winning. While this might seem like nothing right now, these are the kind of results that will come back to bite the club in the back as the season progresses. This piece is in no way an attack on head coach Vincent Kompany. This is not a reactionary piece that tries to attack everyone at the club with pitchforks because of a loss and two draws. There might be a new coach with a refreshing brand of football at the helm, but the problems are the same. Here are some to consider. It’s time to start looking at the players, not the coachWhen Thomas Tuchel saw off last season’s crash and burn of sorts, a major chunk of the blame was immediately placed on the coach and his tactics. This is a good time to revisit that sentiment. Are the fans still supposed to believe that all these players are completely faultless and of Bayern level?By Matchday 4 Kompany seemed to have fixed everything wrong with the club last season, but has now just watched his team falter in three straight winnable games. It might be a tough pill to swallow, but perhaps some of these players simply are not as good their same untouchable selves from the 2020 Champions League run — and things will not change until there is a proper squad upheaval. The fans were promised a rebuild after last season and instead were met with the controversial sale of two defenders. The signing of Micheal Olise, meanwhile, has been a hit. But he was far from the best winger in the world at the time of his signing and has instantly shown himself to be a class above the rest of Bayern’s wingers. There is a clear conclusion to be drawn from that.In fact, I wrote a very similar piece last season after the loss to Saarbrücken last season. A tiny excerpt from that article:People seem to think sacking Tuchel will magically solve everything when it clearly will not.Tuchel might have turned out to be worse than initially anticipated, but the point still stands. Here we are — maybe, just maybe — it is the players. The mentality of a mid-table clubA running trend since late 2022 has been that one bad result snowballs into another at Bayern. In the 2022/23 season, one bad game that ended in a draw led to another three. Last season, a bad result struck even longer and even harder. This season, albeit with limited sample size, the trend continues. Three different managers, but the same inability to come back from a draw/loss.That is an issue in the club’s mentality. Bayern were known to come back guns blazing from any lackluster performances. Recently, it seems like they feel more and more defeated with each game that is not a win. Some post-game quotes that clearly stood out after the 3-3 draw against Frankfurt displayed this new, distinctly un-Bayern-like mentality at the club.Max Eberl:“When was the last time Bayern ran 6 kilometers more in Frankfurt? When did Bayern play so dominantly in Frankfurt? Never! They were second in the Bundesliga and we crushed them. The only thing that really pissed us off is the result.” (via @iMiaSanMia)Vincent Kompany: “A fantastic performance from my team. Bayern lost here 5-1 last year, lost 5-1 another year. I think the expectation was big for [Frankfurt] to be able to do something. But there wasn’t any of it today” (via @iMiaSanMia) Contrast this with the comments after Matchday 6 of the 2022/23 season in an almost identical situation after a 2-2 draw (through conceding a last-minute equalizer) against VfB Stuttgart, also having drawn the last 2 games in the league.Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić:“That wasn’t enough today. We have to shift…

Eintracht Frankfurt v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images “I don’t feel tardy”... Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is not one to be trifled with and has already established some stringent rules that are focused on players being mature and responsible. If they are not...there are consequences per Sport Bild journalist Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): Vincent Kompany has implemented some new internal rules to keep the group together and show his authority:• Whoever is late before training does not have to pay a fine, but instead has to stay at the training ground at least for as long as the coach (players usually leave at 13:00 after the morning training, while Kompany stays at least until 16:00) - this rule was appreciated by the club’s bosses• Whoever is late to the video sessions is not allowed to attend them. You either be punctual or the session takes place without you Even more, Kompany is trying to establish an environment built on clear communication and openness: • Kompany sends the matchday squad on the internal Whatsapp group, but not the lineup. If there’s a tricky decision involving someone, the coach speaks to the player and informs him beforehand. Leon Goretzka, for example, was informed personally by Kompany that he wouldn’t be in the squad on matchday 3. The new boss is doing a lot of the right things to establish a true team culture of accountability in the locker room. Kompany does not bash his players via the media, he keeps all criticism in-house, and treats the players with a lot of respect. Now, if he can solve how to consistently beat a low block, he might really be cooking here.Looking to catch up on all of the weekend’s action from Germany’s top flight? FSV Mainz 05 - Werder Bremen Photo by Uwe Anspach/picture alliance via Getty Images Does international football beckon for Klopp after a long career at Liverpool? A coaching titan the stature of Jürgen Klopp inevitably brings speculation with him when he becomes available on the job market. Klopp, 57, stepped down from his Liverpool FC post after 2023/24. And though he looks set to take a hiatus from the grind of coaching, that has not stopped his name from being floated for high-profile jobs even when there is no vacancy — namely, the German men’s national team coach position currently occupied by former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann. Nagelsmann is signed on until the 2026 World Cup — but after that? Klopp dismissed the topic as politely as he could — though he was forced to address the issue after even DFB chief Rudi Völler answered questions about him.“Everyone is hoping that Julian Nagelsmann will continue for much, much longer than 2026,” Klopp said recently in comments capture via @iMiaSanMia. “Rudi Völler is a very nice guy. He was put in a situation where he had to talk about it.”If Nagelsmann does step down in 2026, though, who might be in the candidate pool to succeed him?

It appears that his injury had not yet healed which explains his separate training session with the England national football team:Harry Kane did not train with the rest of the England squad today as he continues his recovery. The striker trained indoors on an individualised programme as he enters a race to be fit for Thursday night’s Nations League game against Greece at Wembley.– Daily Mail Sport as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMiaA couple of players had already pulled out of the England squad due to injuries, so Kane will be hoping not to join the unfortunate few who had to bail. With other players also receiving injuries of varying lengths of recovery, it begs the question: Why are the international football governing bodies not doing anything about it?

FC Bayern München Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD2 Bayern Munich coach, Vincent Kompany, addresses the media ahead of his sides matchday 2 Champions League clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park on 2 October. | Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images “The wind shield is bigger than the rear-view mirror for a reason. Because what’s in front of you is so much more important that what’s behind you.” — Kompany seem to agree with this famous quote. Bayern Munich have had a strong start to the 2024/25. Vincent Kompany’s side have adopted a high intensity, high-pressing style of football that, as of writing, no team has been able to conquer.Kompany’s flying start comes as a stark contrast to the end of Thomas Tuchel’s tenure at Bayern Munich, which was disappointing to say the least. Naturally, the juxtaposition between the two coaches was always going to draw some attention from the media, however, when asked to compare his side with Thomas Tuchel’s, Kompany refused (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We don’t have to compare anything that was under past coaches and what’s now. That’s not in my thoughts for a second. It’s all about the team now and how I think I can reach the boys. And it’s not a second about the past. We’ve all made mistakes, everyone in this room. That’s life. Now we have a chance to all achieve something new together. It’s a new season - that’s what it’s all about,” said Kompany. To echo Kompany’s words, for the first time in a long time the new season feels like a fresh start. The Belgian coach’s strong philosophy on leaving the past behind and focusing on the present has to be admired for that.Kompany went on to share a brief explanation on his coaching philosophy and benchmark for success.“I don’t have to prove anything as a coach. I think it’s important to keep things separate. Every challenge you take on has a different context. The most important thing for a coach is to say: Have I really done everything I can to get the best out of the team? When you come home every night, you might say I’m tired, but if I’ve done everything I can to make the team better, I’m happy. I have a new club, a new team, a new task. You have to leave the past behind you. It’s not about me now, it’s about the players and the club,” stated Kompany. It would be difficult to argue that what Kompany is doing at Bayern is not working. The coach has taken the emphasis off of himself and put the full focus on the players and club, something Thomas Tuchel could seemingly never accomplish. Some may argue that the past is pivotal for learning what mistakes not to make, Kompany would have surely had enough time to do this before taking over at Bayern. It is therefore important to learn from the mistakes of the past but equally as important to focus on the present moment in order to craft a strong future. At the moment, Kompany is finding the perfect balance at Bayern Munich and one cannot help but be optimistic for the future.

Global Citizen Festival 2024 & FCWC25 Venue Announcement Photo by Adam Hunger - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images One task completed, about a dozen more to go... Ever since the FIFA Club World Cup was announced, it has struggled to get its ships in order and confirm that the basic requirements of a tournament are being fulfilled. For a tournament filled with some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund or Juventus, it is surprising to see how little has been accomplished despite, at the time of writing, the tournament beginning in eight months time. It has struggled to get sponsorship contracts, broadcast deals, justify holding a club tournament between June and July, figure out the logistics of said timing of the tournament and confirm the location of the tournament, let alone the stadiums that will host it. But hey, at least that last one is now finally done. Yes, FIFA finally decided which regions in America the tournament will be held and even released a list of stadiums that will host the tournament. The host stadiums are the following: The MetLife Stadium (New York New Jersey), Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta), Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte), TQL Stadium (Cincinnati), Rose Bowl Stadium (Los Angeles), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), GEODIS Park (Nashville), Camping World Stadium (Orlando), Inter&Co Stadium (Orlando), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia), Lumen Field (Seattle), and Audi Field (Washington, D.C.).One of the hold ups for confirming the stadiums was the worry that the Seattle Sounders, participants in the inaugural Club World Cup, would be allowed to have a home game in the Lumen Field with a capacity of over 68,000 fans cheering them and granting them an unfair advantage. But...as one can see from the above listed stadiums, it seems the decision makers at FIFA just decided to let that advantage stand. Now that finding and confirming the host stadiums are out of the way, one of the biggest-and most basic- hurdles FIFA had to clear has been overcome. Now they have to do everything else...If you are looking for a discussion on Bayern Munich’s recent form, the potential impact of Jamal Musiala’s injury and what it might mean for Bayern Munich, along with our takes on the German national team squad selection, then we have you covered with the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show.
